@@egg64 it would have been possible for later SNK games like Samurai Shodown 4 and Last Blade to be ported to the Saturn if there was support for a 4 meg RAM cart like Capcom used for their Saturn ports. Sadly SNK seemed to drop its support for the Saturn before Capcom did.

I was only aware of SNK via a 4 game Neo-Geo cab in our local Wal-Mart in the 90's. I must have been one of the few people who ever played that, or the "Cadillacs and Dinosaurs" cab that sat next to it in the alcove. I rarely saw anybody else at the machines. I would of course get into Neo-Geo via the "NeoRageX" emulator in the late 90's.

Owning a Neo Geo AES or CD was the best option for having SNK's hits at home in all their arcade glory, but it was pricey. The next best and more afforable option at the time were Saturn ports, which were pretty faithful to the versions on Neo Geo hardware and more affordable. The Saturn's limited RAM was the only thing preventing it from doing 100% accurate ports of animation intense SNK arcade hits

Not only that, but the sound is kinda bad since the music restarts after every. Single. Round. KoF 95, 96 and 97 on 32-Bit consoles seem to be based on the NeoGeo CD versions, so load times are expected and remedied on Saturn. But the sound is kinda off.

I am not familiar with Neo Geo at all, when I was a theology student Another guy, Johnny showed moving clips on his laptop, he notified that some 32X games had "Neo-Geo prices", meaning he thought they were expensive. I did not know it was a machine with places for discs and cartidges, the fighting games seem to be a bit intense, for my taste but I have had Fatal fury on Mega drive before but I grew tired of it and I do not own it anymore. This Eclectic spin on a puzzle game with shoot em up featured and arcade features rolled all in to one in "Twinkle Star" and the magical drops game seem to be right down my alley in definite terms, I am taken by the neat flow and splendour yet easy going mindset these Neo-Geo games came with. Do YOU mean the additional RAM is mandetory to play the games or do you mean that it is just a kind of perfomance change in the dynamics dynamic when taking the cartridge up and putting it in the slot? there are not any wayto play games without the ram extension if they demand it, or do they work in some kind of lo-fi performance without extra ram? this is a question not only based on fighters in this clip but there are many aspect to this question on the Saturn Selection on the whole. Then again the games that are demanding the ram cartridges perhaps does not come in to happening on any of the genres that I like so it .. maybe so.. will not create problems for me. Neo Geo games and Machines ah well have I know so Little on this corner stone of gaming? What else have I missed?? Cartridges AND Compact Disc drive? Yes, apparently, keep on enlighting me about the fly time and perfect groove in terms of gaming M'Lord! I am a great fan of this show.

If the Saturn is far more powerful than the Neo-Geo, then why did it need extra RAM cartridges to play King of Fighter games?
@ravagingwolverine
@ravagingwolverine 5 жыл бұрын
RAM was the weak point of all the old optical-based systems, even the Neo Geo CD. Data from the optical disc needed to be stored in RAM to be accessed quickly during game play and RAM was expensive back in those days. Neo Geo ROM carts offered quick data access, which is also why the system had much less RAM. The Saturn is more powerful than the Neo Geo, but that doesn't mean it had no weaknesses, and Neo Geo's huge cart sizes ensured that it would be competitive for years. But they also give you an idea of how expensive memory was.
@HellTantrumbull
@HellTantrumbull 5 жыл бұрын
To add on to what was said by the first reply, ram also doesn't determine how strong a console is since it's just used to store the data that we see on screen. games made for the sega saturn and especially games made to take full advantage of the systems hardware would have to suffer some serious graphical cuts and cuts in certain other areas if they were to be ported to the neogeo since the saturn's hardware can graphically do things the neogeo can't. In fact the saturn hardware can actually do 100% perfect ports of any of those neogeo games if a ram cart had been made to give it enough ram needed but since only 1mb was ever used and snk never used the 4mb along with no cart being bigger than 4mb ever being made we only got near perfect ports with some titles being better ported than others.
@SegaLordX
@SegaLordX 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's easy to confuse power with architectural design choices. CDROM vs cartridge technology is the real limiting factor here. Had these games come on large Saturn cartridges alone, there would have been no cuts, no compromises. They also would have cost hundreds of dollars just like their Neo Geo counterparts.

Neo-Geo instantly accesses the data in the cartridges, no need to load it in a VRAM. So you virtually have as much RAM as the size of your cartridge. This is not how it works with CD based consoles, or many cartridge consoles that require loading the graphics data in VRAM. Nothing to do with the power of the consoles. And it is not because you are relying on cartridges that the problem is solved. It depends your console's architecture. Neo Geo was built in order to access data directly from the cartridge in real time, this is why you have two huge connectors for the cartridge. This is part of the complexity, and beauty, of the Neo Geo. This architecture also does not allow Neo Geo to do all kinds of crazy transformation in VRAM, since it does not have much VRAM at all (only to store palettes). Advantages/Disadvantages.

Except they weren't, as an avid arcade gamer and owner of a psx alongside all these SNK fighters back in the day, i can tell that the psx version were so stripped down in frames of animation, that it was genuinely painful to play. Games like KOF 96/97 were brutalized. With some characters having their original beautifully animated fierce kick or punch chopped down to 2 frames. Other ports who suffered in general were the Metal Slug saga that comes to mind. So no the psx versions were not better, but worse in every single way enormously long loading times and extremely choppy animation. My had friends who used to come over, we played VS matches at high level play and they used to laugh at the fact that characters that originally had hundreds of beautiful frames, like Iori Yagami or Kyo Kusanagi were so very chopped and rough compared to their arcade counter part.

@@entertainmentwizard2703 First of all, In the Hunt is not even an SNK game, so they have nothing to do with the ports. Second, Playstation version was ported by Xing and Saturn version was ported by Sims, which would explain any difference in quality. Also, the 4MB RAM cart required you to buy a Capcom game to obtain a new one and, for whatever reason, SNK didn't want their existing fans who already bought the 1MB RAM cart for their previous SNK ports to buy yet another RAM cart (from Capcom) to play future ports. Or it's simply a conflict of interest because they were still selling the Neo Geo CD and they don't want these ports to be too good.

Having owned some of these games on neo geo I just can't really enjoy its ports to Saturn or ps1 that much. Added loading screens and resetting music in the middle of fights in kof.... just can't compare... Added slowdown in metal slug 1.... Horrible backgrounds in Waku Waku 7..... I like both Saturn and neo geo but not necessarily together. Maybe the early neo geo games were more easily portable but some of my favorites - not so much. For me I see more value in collecting the odd hidden gem fighters and other games on Saturn from lesser known developers.

I've always found that getting games you truly want to play is the best path when collecting. If one has access to these games on their original hardware, scooping them up as ports somewhere else makes little sense.

Great retrospective. I really enjoyed Neo Geo games on my Saturn when it was current. Even though I had already seen Capcom's CPS2 games in arcades, it was King of Fighters '97 that impressed me with its sprite designs and animation. When I saw that game, I knew I had to have it, and it was great news when I found out that same day that it would be coming to the Saturn some months later. I'd also get Metal Slug and the Samurai Shodown two pack. Though I preferred part four, I think the third game has the best sprite work overall in the series. I share your view on the Samurai Shodown RPG. I don't know if it's good, but it looks like the kind of thing I would love to try if I could read it. It was very cool having a system in the late '90s that could convincingly replicate Neo Geo and CPS2 games that were current releases in the arcades.

Yeah, many people don't understand that the time period really played a huge role in the enjoyment of these kinds of games. Access to them was far more limited then, and many of these were really close to their arcade release dates. Some mere months. Having that kind of access at this level was a godsend.

I went heavy with ports of Neo Geo games up until about 2003, when I finally put up and bought an AES. I eventually picked up an MVS cabinet as well, but I never really went back to ports other than to enjoy the ones with significant differences. I will say, though, that I prefer these ports from tge Saturn, PS1, and Dreamcast over the later emulated collections that came out. The extra features they often bore were fun, and they have a more crisp look and feel compared to the filtered, bare bones compilations that came later.

Any graphical filters you can't turn off is a sin in my eyes. That blur is intolerable.

Fatal Fury 3 was the biggest disappointing port on the Saturn for me. It was the first Fatal Fury game that blew me away in terms of graphics and animation in the arcades. Loved the colorful backgrounds in 3. I probably think 3 has the best backgrounds out of all the Fatal Fury games. When the port hit home on the Saturn.... I was nearly crying at how badly it performed. Luckily at the time I had the AES version to play around with. Now I just enjoy all my Neo Geo home ports on the Playsation 2. The PS2 in my opinion is the poor mans Neo Geo machine. Sure some game compilation had 480i only and filters but most were 240p. Most compilations were close enough to arcade perfect.

I think the reason for the port being like that is because the 1mb ram cart wasn't out yet at the time the game came out. the cart and the game came out in 1996 but the game was out in june while the cart came in september. I'm guessing either sega didn't let snk know about the ram cart or if they did snk decided not to delay the game so they could program it to take advantage of it.

Fatal Fury 3 definitely had problems on the Saturn. Too much for the meager Saturn RAM to handle.

It was so unplayable I believe I actually used the CD to just listen to the tracks I really do miss the days of the Neo Geo. The Art style cannot be matched I had a glimmering hope when King of Fighters 12 and 13 came out though. Would love to see them take it back

I literally don't understand this comment. In his speaking style, SLX shows love and respect for the games, a deep knowledge about the second-hand market (which many of us appreciate), a willingness to give advice about a game's value and playability, and a personal touch with his memories of each game discussed. I have found every SLX video to be entertaining, informative, and worth watching again and again. If you want egotistic jokesters telling lame jokes about games, check out about half of the game videos on YT ... there's plenty for you to watch. I'll be here waiting with my cup of coffee to watch the next SLX video.

Same here. In the mid 90's, Neo Geo games and hardware was a pipe dream. It was just so expensive. Finally getting the ones on Saturn as close as they were was a blessing.
