One thing I really like about the Witcher 3 is that the different areas of the open world don't just have different terrain to explore but also a completely different culture and tone. Running around the Skellege Isles feels like you're playing a viking game. Hanging out in Novigrad and its surrounding area feels like you're playing an authentic middle ages sim. But spending time in Velen with all of the death and destruction that war causes feels like you're in some sort of post apocalyptic game like an old world, low tech Fallout game.

Yeah that would explain why he even gave the name Rhosyn. If you're a Nilfgaardian trying to hide amongst Temerians, using the name of the Nilfgaardian responsible for the most recent battle seems like the dumbest possible plan. That is, unless you didn't think it through, because you didn't know your father had posters with your last name nailed to trees in destroyed villages. Also, makes more sense he'd try to desert if he was closer to grunt level. If he was a general, once he's recovered enough from his wounds to travel back to Nilfgaard's battle lines he'd have a position likely waiting for him. It's not desertion if you were badly wounded and still came back asap. Would he have been demoted for losing the battle? Probably. But he wouldn't be executed. A grunt on the other hand will just get thrown onto the front lines of the next battle. At that point you might as well take your chances with the Temerians.

I suspect he is abandoning his post due to the failure at that battle. As we later learn, the war is not going well for both sides and the offensives have only led to a bitter stalemate for both sides. That sort of failure is not acceptable to kings who demand results. He probably fled the battle, put on a dead soldier's armor, and decided to help the first peasant he could. Once the war is over and the armies have moved on he will likely move on to somewhere else. He just has to pass for a peasant until he goes back home.

Also to note about the Nilfgaardian, something that may show he actually IS that higher ranking one that ordered those deaths, is that typically lower ranking Nilfgaardian soldiers don't speak the Northern language. Hey, love the video. The Nilfgaardian reminds me of the books, where the Field Marshall Coehoorn tries to flee the battle by switching armor with one of his lower ranking aides and hoping to slip by (to no avail). So this could very well be the actual general who, seeing that the battle is lost, ditched his officer armor (rather un Nilfgaardian-likely) and tried to pass as a common footman (playing that "you and I, we are not so different, we are both victims in kings' wars" card). En plus, he speaks the language of Nordlings, which is rather rare among the rank-and-file troops but understandable for a commander in an occupied territory... Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but it's a fun theory

You know, I'm from a family that has had several people in the military, and have been around people of various ranks through out my life. It kind of fits with my experience that how Rhosyn may be higher ranked than he portrays himself. See, in my experience talking to people about their commanding officers (maybe this isn't universal, though, and there are people that don't do this), even if they're the only person from their unit, they refer to the officers over them as "Our lieutenant," not "My lieutenant." Usually the phrase, "My lieutenant" is used by a superior officer, speaking of a lieutenant assigned to them. Again, this is just in my personal experience, but it's a curious trait I've noticed that has been in common with all the military personnel that I've known.
@thegreenreaper66602 жыл бұрын
Small, but important detail yes. Since he indeed sais 'MY lieutenant'! I also think this could indeed be the very same General who is now hiding amongst the peasants in Temeria: Feigning his death in battle would be his best chance in escaping Nilfgaardian punishment for his failure? As the 'Cretin Lieutenant' roughly indicated: Those pompous oafs in the Nilfgaardian Officer-positions considered themselves quite the superiors. The mere nérve to think people can shit on command... And they wonder why they're ending in stalemate after stalemate, whilst Nilfgaard has superior numbers, fár better equipped soldiers, very well supplied armies...vs Peasants, Patriots and Guerilla's? It's a good 'explanation' perhaps that such a superior army would lose vs 'ordinairy peasant-forces', due to their arrogance, and blindness. Probably thinking them simply marching into enemy lands would entitle them to greatness itself or some. Certain officers being só full of themselves, they are totally ignorant to plain simple facts, right in front of them? Its a 'good' recipe for failure! Temerians fighting with their patriottic spirit, vs semi-demoralized Nilfgaardian soldiers who dont have a clue what their officers actually expect from them, and over half the orders are just rubbish? Another example is the 'Bywater-sidequest', where a Nilfgaardian Patrol thinks they are só incredibly awesome, they can take on a dangerous monster(Ekkimara to be precise?),...and ofcourse get totalled by the powerful and ancient being... Imagine being a more realistic general, and you need to deal with such idicracy from spoilt rich nilfgaardian noblemen's sons who BOUGHT their way into a lucrative army-position(so daddy's dearest doesnt risk getting killed in a battle, like the regular folks?) I think after a number of stupid losses, that were caused by such idiocracy(like that Cretin-Lieutentant..again.. what an idiot!) to demand people first shit their bowels empty, before stepping on a battlefield.... Timing is important! Imagine half a squadron getting chopped up by the Temerians or Redanians already, where the other half of the squad is 'under orders' to first shit, before helping their brothers in arms? You're the general, you order a full-on assault and your 'cretin-officers', sabotage your direct orders, causing you to 'lose' the battle, or atleast an undecided stalemate with heavy casualties..... ...yet YOU Are the General that's to awnser for it??? ....Take that a step further; Brought before Emhyr var Emreis to awnser for your militairy failure, and your best defence is blaming those pompous 'rich-boy' officers who sabotaged your orders....Good luck convincing the Emperor, as those rich daddies are probably all advising the Emperor, or have other important titles within the Empire: He'd just be 'sacrificed to serve as an example', and the next General would be placed in command of a bunch of spoilt rich-kid officers? Same problems, same results...

That's an interesting point. Subtle but revealing slip of the tongue on the part of that character? The attention to detail and quality of writing in this game never ceases to amaze me.
@hunter_0221 Жыл бұрын
I know I'm a couple months late, but I've seen this video only now. I'd like to point out that your theory unfortunately collapses when you consider the words that were spoken after "my lieutenant", which are "...demanded of us". Now...if Rhosyn is truly a General (higher ranked than a lieutentant, far higher ranked, as you might know), then why would a meager lieutenant DEMAND of "them" to do something? "Them" or "us" in this case implying that there would be several other Generals present of whom this lieutenant would demand something. That's some mental gymnastics right there. As a member of the armed services in Germany myself (lower enlisted ranks), I can definitely vouch for the fact that we do use plural possessive pronouns like "our" when we refer to our superiors, and that vice-versa higher ranks would use singular pronouns like "my" to refer to subordinates, but while this is the common grammatical form, this doesn't mean we do it all the time. And - consider that Rhoysn is Nilfgaardian, meaning he doesn't speak Common Tongue as his mother tongue. And as a lower enlisted rank, I can absolutely tell you that their conversation is in fact prime grunt-level banter, especially the way the Rhoysn conveys it. Felt right at home with those lads, gotta say. That guy DEFINITELY does not carry himself like a General, and ESPECIALLY not like a Nilfgaardian General. And the last nail in the coffin for that theory is that a General does not fight on the front lines, not like that. A lieutenant - maybe. Colonel - big maybe. But a General? Hell no. You can bet all your crowns that whoever posted that notice on the big tree did so in the General's name as well. That was definitely not the man himself posted that notice.

I think, Rhosyn might be the Nilfgaardian running into Yennefer in the opening cinematic of the game, the Clothes he wears look similar. And he also looks like the Nilfgaardian from the ''Killing Monsters'' Trailer. Might be coincidence, but in my experience, there are not a lot of coincidences in the Witcher.

Witcher3, such masterpiece. There's a lot of details and what if situations to find out if you choose to divert from the actual sequencing of the events. I love this game

That's one of the things I love about this game how it makes you think about your decisions even in the small side quests. You know it's a good game when it makes you feel for characters you won't even see again awesome story telling. Don't know why they bothered making Cyberpunk I'd rather have more Witcher gamea

The twist that Rosen is actually the general that attacked White Orchard and not some private that was conscripted from the family farm would be the sort of thing that would fit with the rest of the game, though. The books too.

This game comes so close to being the most detailed oriented game I’ve ever played. It’s barely beaten out by rdr2.

To me it's way more entertaining than RDR2 :/

The details and seemingly endless possibilities of the Witcher 3 are mind blowing. It's like a true "Butterfly effect game". Is there any "making of" videos of how they actually made it all the possibilities, possible? I have no idea how they did it!

Rhosyn could very well be a prime example of High Commanding Officers having to keep the appearances up lest their throats won't be spared the same blade grunts have to face. If you ask me, if he was looking for an out, faking his death or managing to sneak into the ranks of the grunts was a pretty clever out even if it's never confirmed.

Maybe that Rhosyn guy got promoted during that campaign so he neither got the gold to pay for a nicer armor nor the time to order one by that time. the question remaining would be why he deserts especially after he just has got a promotion but maybe he was just sick and tired of that war. Edit: nice video btw. you just got yourself a new subscriber.

🛡️... Davos, I really do believe that you have done your 'Sherlock Holmes' Work. How you have Scrutinized 'RHOSYN' and figured out a likely solution to,❗) Why he hiding his 'True Identity' and 'Actual Rank' from the other soldier and ‼️) Why RHOSYN doesn't have his Proper Armor to match his rank ❓...🛡️ Thank you 🌹

Appreciate the venture back through witcher 3. Cyberpunk is a great lore on its own. Yet both are very deep in subtle ways.

I actually pointed out to friends if Rhosyn is the same guy as the Viceroy mentioned on those notices but majority of them said its probably a common Nilfgaardian name. In this game, just how many Rhosyns' are there??? Also apart from the detail where he sleeps in the broom closet, visit the fields where Vesemir constructed his fake sheep: it still stands there after all that has happened regardless of the outcome of the war.
