Dear Professor, I’m trying to make a summary that encompasses both classical and neorealism to explain state behavior with regards to the need to survive. Im having a hard time doing so without making a statement that doesnt apply to both. What would you recommend I talk about that

Hi Noah, quick question, is neorealism and structural realism the same thing? basically just 2 names for the same thing.
@NoahZerbe4 ай бұрын
Yes, they are essentially the same thing and are often used interchangeably. Though neorealism can be used to emphasize the broader theoretical framework (essentially as an umbrella term), while structural realism is sometimes used to emphasize the systemic and structural aspects of the theory (especially with respect to the constraints imposed by the anarchic nature of the international system). But that's probably too much in the weeds, and in practice, they're normally used interchangeably.

Hi thank you for making this video. Could you explain about neo-realism as a parsimonious theory?
@NoahZerbe Жыл бұрын
That's an interesting question. Parsimonious theories are just theories that are straightforward in their explanation. Neorealism could be considered parsimonious because its explanatory power is rooted in its understanding fo the nature of the international system. Conflict exists because of anarchy and the security dilemma. That's fairly parsimonious. Hope that helps. Good luck with your studies!
@williamrome22574 ай бұрын
Constructivism bites holes in this construct as well as liberalism. This division becomes barely adequate given the underhanded pressures guiding and suppressing indoctrination as a social norm. Instead of the informed reasoning found in peace and unity. Control and economic favor are the intrinsic goal within this attempt of implied realism

what would you say is a security issue associated with neorealism?
@NoahZerbe3 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure I understand your question. Neorealism focuses on the structural implications of the anarchic international system as the primary source of insecurity and state behavior.

Wait so classical realists do not acknowledge that the system is anarchic in nature? Even if it doesnt make a different to their theory?
@NoahZerbe2 жыл бұрын
It's not that they reject the condition of anarchy, it's just that the idea is not as central to their framework as it is for neorealists.
@christopherwatson41132 жыл бұрын
@@NoahZerbe Thank you for replying. Currently doing an essay on "Is conflict an endemic feature of the contemporary international system?" and attempting to understand all the theories is proving difficult
@malikzain99992 жыл бұрын
How classical realism is an empirical theory?
@NoahZerbe2 жыл бұрын
By empirical we mean that it seeks to understand or explain the world as it is, without making claims about how it should be. This contrasts with normative theories which make claims about how the world should be. My introductory video on critical theory (kzbin.info/www/bejne/d2GtaahjeMR7pcU) might clarify this distinction. Good luck!

Is neo-realism a form of realpolitik?
@NoahZerbe3 жыл бұрын
They're related but not the same thing. Realpolitik is usually used to describe diplomacy (or foreign policy) that is guided by power rather than moral principles. Neorealism is a theoretical manner that argues that conflict is the result of structural forces rather than morality. They overlap, but are not exactly the same thing.
