As I understand it, leopards are tolerated because even though they kill livestock, they also kill feral dogs. Rabies spread by these dogs is a big problem in India, and tens of thousands of people, mostly children, die horrifically from it annually. More direct methods of controlling the dogs aren't possible for political and social reasons.

I feel like leopards are underrated and don’t get enough conservation attention like lions, tigers and snow leopards do, and they play an important role to the environment. Going off the 103 amur leopards in 2018 and 120 in 2019 the population is said to be at least 180 this year meaning they are one of the few leopard subspecies on the increasing trend but since there are a lot more siberian tigers and this year there are at least 800 (exceeding the original expectation of 700) so amur leopards seem to be getting a bit more elusive because of the tigers and amur leopards were once wide spread throughout Siberia, eastern Mongolia, north east China, north and south korea but currently they are mostly found in Russia and China with a very small population in north korea

Yes, but snow leopards are not categorized with the 8 leopard subspecies. Black leopards are not only restricted to India, they are a melanistic color variant of normal leopards (mostly found in SE Asia). Also lions are found only in Gir, so Indian leopards don’t have to compete with lions everywhere in India.

A really interesting video, the Leopard is a true survivor in our world, able to live undetected in the most populated areas , even in large towns in Africa, no one can really give a true population count on this species, but they are certainly not "endangered" as most TV "documentaries" would have us believe, the only limit to their existence would seem to be a suitable prey population, but as this adaptable cat can eat almost any prey, from Beetles to large antelope it is human disturbance that ca cause it to move on. Many thanks for producing this sensible and factual documentary! Chris B.

An unconfirmed report by Russian naturalist Vyacheslav Sysoyev mentions one male Siberian tiger weighing 384 kilograms (846 pounds 9 ounces), which was shot in the Sikhote Alin Gory Mountains, Maritime Territory, Russian Federation, in 1950. Bakyov reported specimens from Manchuria weighing 390-400 kg (860-880 lb). There is reason to believe that such large individuals are now a thing of the past owing to over-hunting of the most sizeable tigers or a reduction of prey over time. Other scientists suggest that these reports may all have been exaggerations.” ~ Guinness book of world records site. Indian Leopard population would officially show 15,000-16,000. But in real it's Atleast Double in numbers ~35,000. 15,000 number comes from India's "Tiger Census" which is limited to just 53 tiger reserves/ total 553+ reserves (Total area of Tiger reserve is just 70,000 sq km or 2.21% of India). So during Tiger Census if they spot Leopard, they count it. But they don't count Leopard out of Tiger Reserves i.e., all the Sancturies & National parks of India. & Leopard also share jungle with Asiatic Lions, bears, wolves.
