While we are on the topic of kart games, Dan, please play Crash Tag Team Racing on the PS2. It has a very unique mechanic where you can merge 2 karts and 1 will be the driver and the other will be the gunner. It is best played with a second player however.

There's some decent game design on the items (maybe they just copied the idea from somewhere?) the diamond that you drop like a banana. When it's hit by an enemy it gives them some time to move next to enemies before it explodes, so you can at least have fun taking people down with you.
