I actually had the Sega CD when I was a kid, and I think Sonic CD was my favorite Sonic game (except for Spinball, obviously). It wasn't nearly as clean as Sonic 3, but the time travel system added quite a bit of depth and replay value, and Metal Sonic is a BADASS in this game. The battle with him near the end was great fun. Gameplay-wise, there are many reasons to prefer Sonic 3, and if I were to put an Objective Video Game Critic hat on I'd say it was a better game, but Sonic CD was deeper and more challenging. Some mechanics didn't age too well - the spin dash is too clunky, the special stages get old fast - but it's a good one. Really, try to go find all the things in the past to get good future.

Nicholas Ring It runs on win 95/98 but there is a patch to get it to run on xp and I managed to install it on win 7 with about 4 hours of painful work ***** If I remember correctly the video was also shorter due to higher fps so rather than drawing new frames they cut off the video when the music, playing at normal speed, ended edit: formatting

I have Sonic CD for PC that came from a Sonic for PC collection. However, due to the PC I had at the time and me being a dummy, I couldn't play it. I just gave up until I have finally played on the Gem collection. But at least I can use it to listen to the U.S. soundtrack.

sonic cd is on steam!? man i had a sega cd thing, this was the best sonic of its time.you started in the present and had to go to the past via flipping a sign and running fast for 5 seconds to time travel, there you had to destroy the robot things and if you got them all when you travel to the future it will either be good if you got them all or bad if you failed.

I believe the difference between the timezones is the difficulty, mainly. The past is where everything is pretty much A-OK and nothings happening, the present is where Eggman is in the midst of taking over the world and the future is where Eggman has taken over and there are robots everywhere. Might be wrong about that one though.

each act has like 4 different variants of the same level. Present Past Future (good) Future (evil) Its insane how good this game is, masterfully designed. My favorite sonic game by far.

Basically, to make a good future, you have to destroy all the things at 2:38 in each zone. They stop Robotnik destroying something or whatnot.

They're robot generators and they can only be found in the past, if you destroy them you get rid of all the enemies in the level. Alternatively you can get all of the time stones (the not chaos emeralds)

True, but those special stages have messed up controls. Robot generators would be easier.

Syl3nc3 Gaming 64 Robot generators require you tediously search every level as well as not fuck up going to the past on EVERY LEVEL. One fuck up and you lose your chance of the good ending that way. But as long as you don't leave the level it's merely a matter of exploring until you've done it all. The other is time stones which are really hard to even get to let alone complete, but at least allow you to complete levels the Sonic way. Pick your poison I guess

I remember getting it, scared me as a kid. Then I somehow corrupted the real disc to make it think it was a pirated game; every time I put it in, to this day it still shows the demon sonic screen. Got it months ago on steam, still as great as it was. By far my fave game, with S&K 2nd and Sonic 3 as 3rd and Sonic 3D Blast as 4th. Yes I like the 3d version; nostalgia my friend.

The one in Sonic 2 was Silver Sonic, the one in Sonic 3 was Mecha Sonic. Sonic CD was the only one that had the real Metal Sonic, and he's definately my favorite out of the set. Mecha is pretty great but he's way too cool for sonic, metal is cartoony enough to fit in while still being pretty cool.

Sehguhnai Yeah Cirom Breeze is right. Silver Sonic refers to the sonic robot you fight at the very end of Sonic 2 on the Death Egg right before the final boss against Robotnik's Death Egg Robot. Silver on its own however refers to Silver the Hedgehog who is from Sonic '06.

This game is actually kind of cool having played through it myself, and yes this game is Metal Sonic's debut as well as Amy's. However I totally agree with you on Sonic 3 & Knuckles as far and away being the best Sonic game ever made and you should totally do a Nerd^3 Completes on it. Sonic 3 & Knuckles also happens to be the only game in the series with Hyper Sonic as well which is my absolute favorite thing in the game.

Ah, Sonic CD. I played the shit out of this when it came out. The opening cinematic blew my 10 year old mind. The reason there are rings stuck in walls and strange level design is that when you time travel, the level layout changes and gives access to said rings. The Mega-CD was a POS really but I quite liked the "Terrible" games it had, from the cheesy-yet-creepy-yet-oddly-erotic Night Trap to the port of the original QTE game, Road Avenger (Road Blaster to some). Gah, I'm nostalgia-ing so hard right now.

Sonic CD was made by Sega of Japan while the same time Sega of America was making Sonic 2. The level design is a lot more explorative than going fast, unlike the main series, which is further emphasised by the robot generators. If you go to the past and destroy the robot generators (that can only be found in the past) in every act of the game, you get the good ending. Alternatively, you can just get all of the time stones.

Fun fact Sonic 2 and Sonic Cd were once the same game however due to disagreements with how the game was meant to be played the original team split into 2 groups one became sonic 2 and the other sonic CD, it is why it feels similar but has a major difference in gameplay and style.

It doesn't look like a Sonic Team game because it isn't (strictly speaking). It was made by Sonic 1's original creator. The 2nd game onwards was done by the Sonic Team.

Sonic team split into two teams to tackle Sonic 2, Sonic And Knuckles (slated to become Sonic 3 at the time) and Sonic CD. Sonic CD is the only game that really has a mechanic for going fast though, every other 2-D Sonic game speed is a reward instead of a mechanic.

The levels are "messy" because you're seeing bits that are only accessible in the future/past that you can't get in your current state. Hence those coins sitting in walls and such.

This game is great, I may have to replay it again because of this video lol, also the bonus stages always looked that way, its not just the resolution the game "simulated" 3d and because of that it looked weird. Random sonic fact: the drowning mechanic was added because sonic team did inadequate research and thought that hedgehogs could not drown Random sonic fact 2: Eggman was the original name which was lost in translation from Japanese, hence the scene in sonic adventure where sonic makes fun of Dr. Robotnik by calling him Eggman, it was a cover up for a previous mistake

I had a Sega CD as a kid. I think it sold better here in the US than Europe. The system had some nice titles, mainly point and click adventure games like Willy Beemish or Rise of the Dragon. Sonic CD has two completely different soundtracks between US and Japan/Europe. I'm not sure which one this is, I think its the Japanese version though. Its weird listening to your nostalgia beat down a game that is clearly and distinctly a core Sonic game. Then again, I feel the same way about 3; adding technical bits like wall climbing and gliding just seems wrong, but I didn't play it back then.

I... actually had Sonic CD. also, you could play sonic or tails in sonic 2, little known fact. At the start screen when it asks sonic or sonic and tails, scroll down one more and you can play as tails. (I tested this on my sega genesis and it worked!)

Here's the reason why this game is a little weird compared to the other old Sonic games: After the development of Sonic 1, most of the Sonic Team was moved to the United States. Some people stuck around in Japan, and while the US team made Sonic 2 (and later S3&K), the Japan team made Sonic CD. The more you know.

The thing about Sonic CD, at least for me, is that most of the JPN soundtrack for zones are better than the US for me, but the US Boss, Final Boss, and Act Clear themes are superior in every way. You should, if you don't yet know, look at the dev history of this, as i'm pretty sure it was developed at the same time as Sonic 2.
