I think this is a very interesting concept for other monsters too. I once threw a green hag boss fight at my party and one reward was a magic rapier, the Liar's Rapier. The thing did 1d8 extra damage if you lie to the creature before you hit it and give you disadvantage to presuade with the truth. Not the best item but very flavor heavy and funny. What I'm saying is items absorving characteristics of monsters is a really cool idea

This gives me an idea for a thieve's guild. The dragon is the guild master and provides these hoard items for missions or any reasons. This way, the item will find their way back to the hoard eventually. Or an idea for a "BBEG", a dragon that can change shape and carries its hoard in a bag of holding (or similar pocket dimension).

Hey Ted, does it seem like the WotC books are going in more open ended and conceptual directions than previously released books?
@carlsmagicbicep97363 жыл бұрын
Yes. Yes they are
@ryanflake34813 жыл бұрын
I would agree with that. I think that it's probably due to a combination of two factors. One is that they are putting out less books a year than prior editions, so they need to maximize the usability of each book to ensure that as many people as possible buy each one. The other is that every year they are putting out a new setting book. Eberron, Ravnica, Theros, and soon a second book in the Critical Role world. So doing things that are focused on fleshing out a single setting reduces it's applicability to those players playing in a different setting. So they need to make things as open ended and universally useful as possible.
@yocean143 жыл бұрын
@@ryanflake3481 I will also add to that they probably realize many people play in their own homebrew settings too so something that’s more “universal” would be more useful and attractive.

I was hopping for this book to have more templates for Draco Liches, Shadow Dragons, Skeleton Golem Dragons and Ghost dragons. Also for items or crafting stuff made from dragon parts and harvesting tables. We do have the Skeleton and Ghost Dragons but templates for weaker versions, depending the bones of the dragon (I asume gem dragons have gem-ish bones), or the age of the dragon, (a wyrmling Ghost Dragon is a thing?). This apply to Shadow dragons which we do have Lair stuff but nothing else or for Draco Liches. A more spicy approach for those other than the Monster Manual ones. Any item technically can be a horde item so templates for that as you mention. Like, if its a weapon it gets this and that, if its a potion its gets some wield side effects or more potent ones, etc. Even seeing some items get unstable cause the dragon magic might have been interesting, similar to being cursed an item might make you randomly just speak in Draconic or something like that or a protection ring that burns you with the dragon breath weapon when you use it but gives a bonus to the normal effect or what not.

Gem too to a degree, since most Gem Dragons are Neutral, if players are evil aligned or get in good with one could even work for Chromatics on very rare occasions.
@benjaminjane933 жыл бұрын
I have a hard time seeing any Dragon regardless of alignment let you 'borrow' a magic item out of their hoard. Their hoard is literally their way of buying themselves into entering the afterlife. A dragon can catalogue their whole hoard down to the last copper coin. They certainly could lead you to find a powerful magic item. But I don't see them actually letting you borrow one without putting up a collateral that is of equal value. And with that said. Dragons have an almost supernatural sense of being able to appraise an item so there's no bargaining with the prize. If a flaming sword is worth 5301 gold pieces then it would not accept 5300 or bargain down to 5000. Their treasure is worth more to them than anything in the world.
@joshuahendershot1963 жыл бұрын
@@benjaminjane93 I believe what he meant was not borrowing an item, was if you had a slumbering item you could ask a Good Aligned Metallic dragon to just let your item chill in their hoard for a year or so to fully charge, Metallic Dragons are more likely to respect ownership than chromatic dragons would be Chromatics would just be like Hippity Hoppity, This is now my property.

@benjaminjane933 жыл бұрын
@@Geostelar4920 Chromatic would obviously not, least of all Red or Black dragons. Metallic Dragons it's a definite maybe. For them it's a conflict about their hoards being a very personal thing. It is literally their lives work, their self worth is measured in their hoard, they would definitely ask for help if an item was stolen from their hoard. A particular valuable item being stolen might insentivize them to borrow something out of their hoard to get it back. But you keep in mind that this fixation of wealth is very particular - all dragons covet riches. They cannot under any circumstance lose something out of their hoard without suffering massive trauma. Which is why a Dragon will never flee from a fight within it's lair. So parting with even a gold coin would be as awful for them as if they parted with a Legendary Warhammer.

Hover is a really big deal imo. Normally the primary downside of flying is falling damage, but you can't be knocked down even if unconscious if you can hover. And since it doesn't require concentration or have a duration it can constantly be active.
@mespivus3 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure this is RAW or RAI. Fly, and by extension hover, with a spell would only maintain flight if the character concentrating is not incapacitated. Incapacitation ends concentration spells. I think the more reasonable reading of this feature is that hover protects you from a trip attack for example but I wouldn't read it as though the spectral wings continue to move once you are the one that is incapacitated, thus you would still fall if you're not actively flying or hovering.

I suppose some of these might trounce on other armors already available and maybe that's why they didn't do it.

The idea of magic items that improve has ALWAYS been a concept my players and dm friends love. We’re totally using these for progressive items. For example I’ve been playing a celestial warlock who’s patron (and now wife) is a daughter of Bahamut. He’s also rolled with the Heir to the neverwinter throne background in icewind dale. Long story short we erected a kingdom in honor of bahamut and forged a crown. We treated it as a circlet of blasting but it feels VERY weak now. But it’s the crown of our kingdom! We were looking at upgrading it and giving it the stats of the staff of fire, but now with these leveling options we can do so much more fitting and thematic power level increases. And since my wife is the dragon I think she’ll let me keep it in her hoard while in the castle =P

My brain kicks into overdrive. I'm now putting together a story line about a suit of black dragon scale armour. A black dragon has a relationship with duergar weaponsmith/armourer and allows him to take scales that have collected over the years as he grew to create a scale armour set to add to his collection. Personalising the armour to himself and adding to his horde. ...okay it needs to be fleshed out, but that is just the premise of it. For armour or a shield I think I'd follow the Scaled Ornament example. In my head it wouldn't be a huge leap to get there from a cloak.

I know it can be a bit frustrating that we don't have "homebrew templents" to work off of, but consider this: These templents could end up functioning as more of a limiting factor than an expansion on the content. Any rules lawyer could throw a wet blanket on an idea by criticizing the fact that it doesn't strictly follow the templent as stated in the source book. And those conversations are never fun for anyone to have at a table. However, I do wish, in that respect, that D&D had a bit more of a modular format to distinguish certain things like spells, long rest abilities, feats, and otherwise. Would certainly simplify the process of reverse-engineering the design of content and customizing it as need.

I think I have complained about your complaint (about not having a template for everything to homebrew anything you want) before, so not going to re-hash it here. If it is your campaign, make it however you want! Overpowered is in the eye of the beholder (figuratively). If you as DM find something overpowered, remove/dilute it through game actions! If you design something too weak, "level it up" as an adventure reward! Your game is yours, and homebrew stuff won't transfer intergame automatically anyway.

Not sure if I read anything about an item steeped in hordes of two different types of dragons. I have a situation in the campaign I am running that the PC are teaming with a very young dragon to take back the lair of her parent from another dragon. In that case would you think the horde magic item only absorbs the second dragon's powers or would it be the case of both? Would the time between the original dragon's death and new dragon's take over matter?

@@yocean14 If I had to guess its up to you. And, lets say the old dragon was white and the new, evil one is black, you could also ask the player you intend to give the magic item to what element they would like more. So for example, you could either say that the ice in the core of the sword absorbed the black dragons power and grew stronger, or you could say that the power of the black dragon melted the ice away, leaving nought behind but a pool of deadly acid. Either way, I‘d just talk to my players, might be good to know what their favorite kind of item/element is so they don‘t get disappointed when they really wanted a flaming glaive, but got an acid dagger instead. That way, you could also make it less obvious even though they probably expect a reward for that quest nonetheless.^^
@Pancakeli3 жыл бұрын
I think if they kill the dragon and use the faster steeping rules, then the item would end up steeping in whatever the dead dragon's hoard was, but if they waited till the other dragon claimed it and waited a year, then it would be that dragon's type. With the Dragon Touched focus, it gets different abilities based on what type of dragon it became certain levels in. One focus might only have the chromatic abilities, another might have the gem teleporting ability and the metallic spells, and so on. The Dragon's Wrath weapon is a little unclear to me, but for simplicity's sake, I'd have it switch based on the last one it steeped it, but you could easily keep track of the individual levels, the bonus nat 20 burst damage could be acid if it was a black dragon's, then it could gain 1d6 of fire from a gold dragon, 1d6 of cold from a white one, and then 1d6 of psychic from an emerald dragon. Either way could be cool and flavorful as the weapon transforms and grows.

My only gripe with hoard items is that the progression system is kinda convoluted. The only real way to have the weapon actually grow with you would be to slay a dragon of each age range in sequence throughout the campaign. And i dont know about everyone else, but i rarely ever get to play in a campaign where more than one dragon is fought, and only once have i ever gotten a chance to fight an ancient dragon. I think i'll probably end up reflavoring these hoard items to progress with the player character like a Vestige, rather than essentially having to set up a dragon slaying campaign specifically. Unless you make friends with a different dragon for each age group, then timeskip a year every time as the item steeps so you can actually use it at the levels it's new state is intended for, you're more than likely just gonna have to slay a bunch of dragons.
