My aunt rented this film for everybody to watch when i was 13. She was mortified by the violence -at least for a family movie afternoon-, meanwhile i was mesmerized by it, by the sound, the guns, the characters, the plot, the mind blowing scene where the "good" and the "bad" guys shared a cup of coffee (mind blowing for me). She apologized to us a lot while i decided back then it was my favorite movie ever. That decision holds up pretty well today, as i am 40.

Bruh, I have such a similar story. My grandma took us to see Wayne’s World when I was 11 or 12. I was so young and innocent I didn’t even get all the jokes. I loved the movie and she was mortified that she would be in trouble from my parents, who were conservative parents. That movie is a part of me. Heat is one of my favorite movies of all time and knowing now Michael Mann did Collateral and this, makes so much sense especially having the balls to redo it again. The man is obviously a genius. Thank God for family member ignorance 😂

That’s because it wasn’t a set. It was filmed in downtown Los Angeles. They were given permission to close parts it off and film on the weekends. The major bank job is at 444 South Flower Street at Fifth Street, downtown, (you can see its geometric silver sculptures on the forecourt again in Fight Club and in William Friedkin’s To Live and Die in LA), and the subsequent mother of all shoot-outs spills out onto the stretch of South Figueroa Street between Fifth and Fourth Streets.

@@philbinpar1 it was pretty good. What you probably noticed as unrealistic was the “unlimited ammo” - yeah, they definitely fire more rounds than those magazines hold and don’t reload as realistically as they should.

The scene where Hanna tells his wife's new boyfriend "You can sleep with my wife but you're not gonna watch my television" and then takes the TV only to shove it out the car door is lifted directly from an episode of Crime Story. So Mann was mining a bunch of his past work, making Heat kind of his master's thesis of his entire filmography.

Good call! I posted the exact same thing a few lines up, not realizing you got there first! :) Crime Story was one of my favorite cop shows. For a while, Friday nights were amazing in the mid 1980s - Miami Vice at 9PM, Crime Story at 10PM.

Mann recycled lots of material throughout his movies & TV shows, especially stuff he got from Chuck Adamson...the real life Vincent Hanna...who had actually ran the Major Crimes Unit in Chicago back in the day. Adamson introduced Mann to real life cops & crooks, such as Dennis Farina, who he cast as actors & the fat guy Paulie on Crime Story, who was a real life safecracker Mann met while reaching his movie Thief. He gave Mann the scoop on the burning bars used to cut into safes in Thief & Crime Story. An episode of Miami Vice where Crockett gets into the mind of a psycho burglar came straight from one of Adamson's old cases where the nightime burglar only picked houses with air conditioners because their noise covered up him breaking in. Ever see the old origional series The Stand...the tough guy who Flagg had in charge of security in Vegas was Chuck Adamson LOL.

Collateral comes as close to the Heat as a great action thriller in Michael Mann filmmaking. I think Insider is captured the Heat atmosphere much more stronger even though it’s not action thriller. The Atmosphere and tension is so right in there. Collateral is kind of missing the Mann’s craftsman tension here. Miami Vice and Blackhat are anticipated to experience that gripping tension but they are just like a show-off cool movies.

Honestly for a television show L.A Takedown was pretty good. I watched the original broadcast because I was a big Miami Vice fan and it was supposed to be Mann' follow up and thought it was going to be a good series. BTW he did kind of go ahead with a series that was based on L.A. Takedown in the late 90s...Robbery Homicide Division.

I saw Heat in the theater with my Dad, Uncle, and cousin, I was twelve. It was then and still is fantastic today. Probably the best Pacino and DeNiro performances outside of The Godfather. The armored car and subsequent bank heists are some of the most visceral, heart pounding moments ever captured on screen outside of war films like Saving Private Ryan. Which is why they are so memorable, because they are happening on city streets where people are just going about their day, when suddenly there’s an unexpected eruption of violence.

Christopher Nolan made a reference to Heat in The Dark Knight with William Fichtner as he played the Bank Manager and was inspired by Heat. That movie was an inspiration to The Dark Knight. yep, back then being a tv director was basically a path to obscurity. there was no artistic creativity or good story format in tv, and big directors hated working in it. but now it's literally the opposite, now tv offers more creativity and budget than studio movies

Besides Michael Mann there's Robert Altman, Michael Crichton, Ava DuVernay, Arthur Penn, John Frankenheimer, Sidney Lumet, Sidney Pollack, Judd Apatow, a guy whom his TV experience sent into obscurity named Steven Spielberg and David Fincher who started out directing music videos that were made for a thing called MTV. Those are all directors who started in television among many others. Television has always been the cradle of long form narratives from the Golden Age of television onward. Without television there's no Rod Serling. Television was what rescued Alfred Hitchcock's career on the 30's and 60's after 30 years as a movie director he couldn't get Hollywood to finance his films anymore. His television anthology series made his movie career viable again. Directors liked to work and either began or returned to television with none of the hatred for the medium that you think they had. They all considered it either a great training experience or a way to do things that the big studios wouldn't take a risk on.

It can also be attributed to poor direction, movie script writing and adaptation. If you can't develop well-formed characters & tell a solid story in 120 mins. than you're doing it wrong. So many movies today focus so much on action & special effects they lose the art of good story telling.

This really shows you how much great actors can effect the overall movie. When Robert dinero and al Pacino are sitting in the coffee shop, before they have even said a word, the tension is so thick that the words actually feel like a relief. And then the words build again. You can feel the self loathing in Pacino's voice when he says "no, my life's a disaster song" or deniro telling him "yeah, we've met face to face, but I will not hesitate".

That video got taken down a while ago, which is a pity since of all the countless collage-style tributes to cinematic auteurs here on KZbin, that one was easily the best because of how effectively it distilled the essence of Manns work into a single 12 minute compilation. I read Heat 2, it’s definitely better than most follow up to film novels. Exactly what Mann said in the forward, it’s showing the reader the extra layers to these characters through events that took place years before the events in Heat. Worth the read for sure! I’m reluctantly hoping they don’t make a sequel film however…I don’t think the magic can be caught twice.

Former SAS.trooper Andy McNab (and others) had significant input and influence in the film’s production. Mann’s meticulousness preparation matched those of the professional war fighters. McNabs only criticism was that De Niro’s would have never made the threatening (and therefore alerting) phone call to Van Zant. He would have just turned up and killed him. I think much has changed in weapons and tactics since the movie was made but at the time was unequalled and incredibly influential.

Back in the mid-90's I used to buy a magazine called Film Threat. One of the articles covered this exact story. I'd seen the TV movie, LA Takedown, and I thought it was pretty good for TV fare. 6 or 7 years later, I saw Heat. It's one of my favorites. Despite the fact that Michael Mann was involved in both ventures, the relatively tiny gap separating the two offerings and the nagging feeling I'd seen the Heat beats somewhere else, I never made the connection till Film Threat put it in front of me. Same scenes, same dialog(minus network unfriendly words) same dynamics. It quickly became a favorite story of mine. How a writer/director, self-plagerized, and turned an OK, routine TV action flick into such an absolutely amazing MOVIE. Having two great actors like Deniro and Pacino have their first collaboration on film didn't hurt either. I recently rewatched the OG version and it looks like a lost episode of Miami Vice, style-wise. That's probably why I liked it at the time, but it, like Miami Vice, was a product of the times. So glad Mann had the opportunity to do things extremely right. He didn't waste it.

One thing that I think bears mentioning is that LA Takedown is unremarkable, but not particularly bad. Heat makes major stylistic changes, massively improves on cinematography, music, and performances by the whole cast to elevate itself to the apex of the genre. I remember Crime Story. I was 19 years old in 86. But I was too damn busy to watch it with any regularity. Years later I saw HEAT with my then wife in 1995. I have to say....everybody in the theater was blown away. It still holds as what I think is the #1 crime movie of all time.

Crime Story was / is one of the best series ever to hit the airwaves. To this day Ray Luca and Mike Torello rule. And don't mess with Mikes T.V. set. When I saw that scene in Heat, I knew where it came from, exact.

You're right about Crime Story. What also made it great was that it was made under the old rules of TV: if it's on the public airwaves during primetime, there are certain things that cannot be done/said. This was just at the beginning of paid TV, where better budgets and material could be gold-mined completely ignoring the censors. Crime Story played by the then rules, yet was still very compelling television. Plus Dennis Farina - need I say more?

I can kinda relate. As an illustrator, some of the best paintings I've ever created are near carbon copies of an original in had done 5, 10 years earlier, but added all I had learned in that time. Exellent video for an exellent movie. I would love to have seen that movie in the theater when it came out. But I had never heard about it. A guy I was having coffee with in the 90's had just rented it on VHS and highly recommended it. I was almost turned off with the fact that it was on two VHS tapes, but I rented it anyway. I absolutely loved it. It's one of those movies where you actually cheer for the alleged bad guy. I then highly recommended it to a friend of mine, who also loved it. It's still one of our favourite movies. The bank shoot out scene is so well done, that it is an absolute must have when ever testing out a home theater system's surround sound system.

I saw LA Takedown growing up, and actually really enjoyed it. Then I saw HEAT in theaters, opening weekend, and I'm telling my girlfriend beat for beat what is about to happen. She thought I was a psychic or something. I explained that I had already seen the movie, but it didn't have the same actors. She didn't believe me. I wish I could find LA Takedown to purchase on VUDU so that I could see it again and determine which version I like better.

Crime Story was a great series that doesn't get enough attention and had two of the best cliffhanger endings for each of it's two seasons that any series has ever had.

I watched Heat a couple nights ago, and LA Takedown last night. It was a very diffrrent experience. I am familiar with Heat. Upon watching L.A. it was like watching an abridged version of Heat. The acti g was very decent. Very very decent. Im glad I found out about this and that it was available to watch on youtube.

You know with all these series being made out of movies, Heat is actually a really, really good concept for a show. I'm glad we got a movie instead of a TV show in the 80s/90s. But I'd love a Heat TV show now. The time is absolutely right.

Mann did turn it into a TV series called Robbery Homicide Division...different characters but essentially the squad from Heat/L.A. Takedown

I will never forget the fisr time i saw HEAT. I had programmed my VHS recorder to record another movie that i couldn't watch at that time. So i watched the movie - i don't even remember wich movie it was and after that the network showed HEAT and unintentionallly i recorded this masterpiece too. So i watched it and TWO MINUTES before the big final of HEAT the VHS TAPE run out. I was furious.

I watched Heat at the Theatre midnight screening when i was 19 after a long day of shift work. Fell asleep till the bank heist shootout, didnt think it was a great movie until i watched it again on tv without falling asleep & its one of my all time best movie

One of my high school teachers put the bank robbery scene on but with the TV covered so we could just hear the sounds. My class then had to write down what we each thought happened. This was in 2002 and I had already seen the movie so he told me to just be quiet.

Good video. I'm about 2/3 through Heat 2 and so far it has not disappointed. If you have not seen Heat, best to watch it first.

The biggest improvement to LA Takedown are Pacino's line readings: "because she's got a ... GREAT ASS. And you've. ... got your head ... ALL THE WAY UP IN IT!" Just fantastic.

Excellent, excellent, excellent film. One of my all-time favorites (been in my top 5 pretty much since it came out).. I watched a rescreening of it near Phoenix at an 'upscale' theater.. This theater had couches, a full menu (food brought to you), and full bar.. Tickets were only $5 (they know you're going to spend on food/drink).. And since this was a rescreening of a classic, you had proper movie fans there.. The screen was the right size too.. I hadn't seen the movie on the big screen in 22 years and it was fantastic!!! I would LOVE to open a place like that.. My own movie selection.. Nothing that's currently playing, just what I classify as 'classics'.. Combine it with my love for food and drink and you have a fantastic Friday and Saturday night hang out.. Complete with 'pre-game' snacks and drinks.. 'main event' dinner and/or popcorn.. and of course 'post-curtain', where the folks can discuss the movie while enjoying ice cream and/or pie/cake or a night cap..

This has to be one of the best fire fights in a movie scene. The bank exit scene I assume took inspiration for the "think it was" Hollywood bank Robbery in the 1990's. Except I think they used 50 round drums on an AK. The choice of firearms in the movie was not done on a whim. First time I watched it I thought Al was sporting as Daewoo dr200 and not a FNC.. The audio was spot on.

Check out Michael Mann's debut feature film "Theif". This is the movie that set the stage for all his crime movies in the future. His films all involve great characters studies which makes them extremely riveting & entertaining.

This is perfectly reasonable, the Mann had no budget back in 89, and remakes hos won movie it once he has all the resources to his disposal. a TRUE storyteller indeed!

Saw the 4K restoration at the Tribeca Film Festival right after an Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro panel. I must say, this film aged really well and still looks like it could have been made today and even better. This movie was shot so beautifully. Those gun shot sounds in the theatre were so chilling .

HEAT is still for me the best hiest movie thriller of all time. And HEAT2 is coming in book form soon. I'm looking forward to reading the prequel/sequel. Michael is da Mann.

I just watched LA Takedown (it was very tough to find but totally worth it). It is actually very very good. The ending is a little bit different but the essence of Heat is totally there, the guys even feel a little bit like DeNiro and Pacino. Very very good indeed. Very underrated/underappreciated. Not forgettable at all.
