When Heat came out on DVD for the first time, I was working at Blockbuster. It was my first dvd purchase and I played it on my PS2, running the audio through one of those 90's boombox/stereos with detachable speakers. It sounded like nothing I had ever heard before. The echoes of the gun shots, the sound of glass hitting the pavement, everything sounded amazing. I was sold on the DVD format then and there.

Sadly this led to that I never saw the second movie in cinema, because I knew it was same story, same director. Only similar case I can think of right off the bat is Sam Raimi and Evil dead and Evil dead 2? Else I think Manns finest is Thief, Manhunter, Mohicans and Heat, Insider and Collateral is also close to being great. The 80s vibe and great music really helps out too (thats what makes Mohicans an odd one but it works perfectly). For those who enjoy heat, I would suggest watch also Driver, To live and die in LA, Fear City, Black Rain, Sicario, No country for old men.

@@matthewbellious5676 As explained _in this very video,_ what you said is incorrect, or at the very least badly framed. It was a rumor for almost 20 years, based on another rumor that De Niro and Pacino didn't like each other and didn't want to work together, so stand-ins were used. But according to an interview with Mann in 2016, *both rumors were false!* Mann claimed that the whole thing was shot simultaneously with three cameras, one of which filmed both actors simultaneously; but that third camera footage was never used in the film, because the close-ups were so powerful. As Mann claimed - and this video repeats - that all "over the shoulder" shots seen in the actual film are from one single take (Take #11) that was shot simultaneously on both cameras. This is further supported by the fact that there has never actually been any evidence or even eyewitness reports indicating that De Niro and Pacino were ever unfriendly to each other - the rumor came out of nowhere. Now, whether or not you want to believe Mann is up to you; but it's important not to present an opinion as a fact.

holy _moly_ is the acting in that first scene a revelation (of sorts). the quality of performance given by the actor in the original playing what would be the Bob De Niro character in _Heat_ versus . . . well, Robert De Niro in _Heat_ is really something to see. Hollowood pays these stars like Bob or Al such absurd amounts of money to appear in their movies - and many of the finished film projects suck with the tremendous force of a dying star. _Gross Grandpa_ or _Dirty Grandpa,_ whatever that was called - a criminal waste of De Niro and all other talents and time involved. but when you get somebody at the peak of their craft like Michael Mann in 1995 with a screenplay based on care and character, and a real purpose to tell a distinct story . . . all those dozens of millions paid are worth it, and I'd argue often more. sometimes, when you're Producer working on a great project with a great script with a brilliant Director at the helm, you DO get what you pay for. like Mann with Pacino / De Niro / Etc. or Tarantino with Brad Pitt in _Once Upon a Time in Hollywood_ . . . where whatever he was actually paid, they could've doubled it for the value they gave the film. and still came out profitable. sometimes the sick cycle of Hollowood actually _works._ and when it does it's worth it. I think it's worth it. the job still gets done, it's just not so often in theaters anymore.

Absolutely, loved the book, i think the future parts are likely impossible to adapt without Val. But the past sections, which is some of the best, are perfect for film, and I think the casting of Adam Driver and Austin Butler was already rumoured, whatever you make of that, and Ana de Armas which makes sense although I think Eiza Gonzales would much better fit Neil’s first gf. Just curious who they cast for supporting characters like young Michael Cherrito, Charlene, as well as Druckers & Casals. Also the big villain needs to be cast very carefully cuz it all depends on whether you can sell his insane cruelty in a way thats not over-the-top and cheesy.

Never saw LA Takedown. I know when I first saw Heat I was upset that I never saw it in the theater. I saw it on VHS and was amazed by what I saw. I saw it with some people I used to know. We all loved it. It is still one of those films you walk away from the screen and talk about it or think about it. Mann did a great job telling the story in every way possible. He is a good story teller. I do have the book of Heat 2. I wish he would write a novelization for the movie, as well. I would like to read both of them. Although, much would be lost with the powerful performances of Pacino and DeNiro. That is hard to challenge. I would like to see LA Takedown. Just because my love for Heat is so massive. I also need to get a better copy of the movie Heat. It was so well done. I saw the film last year and was shocked at the A/V quality. It was amazing. I had not seen the film in so long, I forgot how well the film was made. Also, I am big guy on sound in a film. The sound quality was amazing. If you have seen Mann's other film you did not talk about, The Last of the Mohicans, you would understand that watching a Mann movie, you are in for a treat. Both films are excellently made and replay is always great. Oh, you mentioned Miami Vice. I bought the series on DVD. It was all remastered. I was shocked that a 1980's TV series could look and sound so good. That is because of Mann and his people doing a wonderful job on that production, as well. Hey I can go on and on. I just wanted to say: Great video. Very well done. I think I am out of room. LOL

I don't know the first movie, but I saw Heat in the cinema when it came out. And was, well the heist scene works best on a biiig canvas, blown away. The movie is long, but I now think nothing could be taken away. Back then I did not understand the Waingro character and considered him filler. About 5 times I rewatched head on DVD. The movie works. Every single scene works. The movie does not tell everything, but I think Vincent Hanna (the character of Al Pacino) is a user. A master criminal versus a genius cop. A story about trust and betrayal. A story about what if. A story about determination. A story about risk and reward/loss. A story about how success eats your soul. How you win the fight yet lose your cause. How to be good in your job while having no life.

They found someone to play the role of Al Pacino in The Offer. They could find actors to play those roles who would look similar enough, they don't have to be A list actors. They could also just go with some of the great young actors and not try to have looks that would match with Pacino and DeNiro (apparently Adam Driver might play the young McCauley role) The real problem is the aftermath, because Val Kilmer won't be able to do it, but even there, if it's done well it doesn't matter. It's all about the storytelling. We'll find out if WB actually goes through with it.

Kilmer was John Wick before Keanu was!

What about Robert Pattinson as Hanna and Ryan Gosling as McCauley? Pattinson has that laid back attitude while simultaneously being utterly sharp; whereas Gosling has that cold killer stare hiding a softer man inside.

Glad to see LA Takedown before Heat. This kind of cinema seems to be lost.

if you hesitate to think who is actually the more evil person, remember the end of this video when pacinos character puts a young child in danger to kill one of the robbers. DeNiros crew (except for the wain) didnt want to kill civilians or even police, they only defended themselvses.

So, Mann remade another movie into HEAT? Two movies? Never seen LA Takedown, but I always thought his 1981 movie Thief was also very similar to HEAT, maybe not a remake, but several scenes from HEAT are lifted straight out of Thief. Guy really took two movies to create one perfect movie xD
