Why The Mummy Might Be The Best Indiana Jones Sequel

In 1999, 10 Years after Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, filmmakers wanted another shot at an action/adventure story that took place in the early 1900's. The Mummy starring Brendan Fraser was their answer. When The Mummy finally hit the big screen, fans realized this was the Indiana Jones sequel we've always wanted. Yes, Last Crusade is amazing, but The Mummy immediately took us back to the inspiration that got Indiana Jones off the ground.

I love how people are starting to realize how good this film was all along. It was fun and charming and exciting. I guess it took the Tom Cruise reboot to make people see that the Brendan Fraser one was a gem.

I never denied it was good; on the contrary, I loved it since they day I saw it for the first time in theaters in the 90's. In the time I could really enjoy going to the movies. Sure the experience of the theater is still miles better then what we have at home and the technology no doubt has improved beyond expectations to what was possible at the times of the Mummy... but the problems of Hollywood is that they now rely solely on those CGI special effects instead of actually creating a good story... more over they are now all about stuffing your throat with politics and the story is just a distant afterthought.... While going to the theater will always be a better experience then at home; I just don't see myself going to the theater coz today's movies aren't fun anymore. Nothing sucks harder then coming out of the theater and be like.... 'well that sucks; I paid a lot of bucks to see absolute garbage'. That's why I don't go to the theater anymore; it's not the quality of the theater, it's the disgusting degradation of Hollywood and the movies that are produced.

My favourite part is that, after all the traitorous shit that Benny did, Rick still genuinely tried to help him. As much as he probably disliked him, part of him still remembered that he was once a 'friend' and you don't leave people to die like that, even if they deserve it. That final "goodbye benny" is both "I'm sad you died but you brought this on yourself and I'm not gonna beat myself up about it".

Indeed. I heard the film was best described as what Kingdom of The Crystal Skull should have been, and I wholeheartedly agree with that perspective. Even after remembering how the film originally attracted dislike for it's more photorealism look when originally showing, nice to see that the effort to give a more cartoon-y sense of design to the faces and world has helped it hold of visually way better than it really should have. I do very much enjoy coming back to it now and then.

It is a shame this genre of movies isnt made very often. It is probably my favorite type of movies. I have recently been watching these adventure movies. The most recent new movie was Jungle Cruise. It was not as good as Pirates of the Caribbean but a fun watch. Some others I watched recently were the Journey to the Center of the Earth series and the Scorpion King. The Mummy series is probably the next i will rewatch.

I always loved the subtle humor they put in. Like when O'Connell first met Carnahan and Carnahan playfully slaps him on the chest, and O'Connell immediately checks if he stole his wallet while mocking his laughing.

One of my favourite movies as a teenager - still stands up today. In fact, having today watched the trailer for the Uncharted movie, and then this video, I wonder whether The Mummy might just be the Uncharted we all want!

I grew up on this film as a young Kid and have watched this film and it's sequel at least once every year. It is the best Mummy film ever made and should be Brendan Frasier's crowning Achievement of his Career.

As a kid I was obsessed with The Mummy. I had it on VHS and I would watch it all the time. It's still a comfort movie for me to this day.

Yeah watched this a few months back- it was a childhood favorite and I wanted my wife to see it. And I realized just how high quality it really is- there are clear stakes, understandable characters, obvious motivations, and great effects! It is definitely awesome

I love the 2 Mummy movies from the 90s. Sadly when Rachel Weisz did not return for the third movie the franchise died. But everything has a silver lining, since then Ms Weisz has given us excellent performances as a dramatic actor in many films. Watch her in The Favourite, playing a meanie, she's fantastic.

You know what?.... YES. It is a worthy, brilliant "spiritual successor" to the IJ films. I fondly look back at The Mummy movies and remember the 1st one being a super fun ride back when we watched it for the first time

6:34 yes but he also feels again like even older pulp character and not just from the traditional adventure pulps either, there's some reflections of Solomon Kane foils there too.

The Mummy was so good, the VHS included a little introduction for Pathé films done by Eddie Izzard in their inimitable style, which was as worth watching as the movie :)

I’m not sure if anyone has mentioned this yet, but the mummy was heavily marketed as an indiana Jones-esque adventure film in Japan, changing the title and using fonts similar to the Indy series.

Loved The Mummy since the first time I saw it in theaters and it was always reminiscent of an Indy film, much more so than Kingdom of the Crystal Skill (and, I suspect, Dial of Destiny).

I miss Brendan Fraser so much, he was my fav actor for years, Encino man, Mummy, bedazzled. Hell Bedazzled, blade, austin powers and the matrix was were the best movie at that time and I saw bedazzled more than all the others. I was late with American pie, didn't find them until 04

I introduced this movie (my favorite movie of all time!!) to my nephew earlier this year, and he tried to resist it's charm, but failed epically. His jaw was hanging and he kept asking how everything was happening, which was great because this movie came out over two decades ago

I wasn't even looking at the screen when he said "good bye benny" and I had it perfectly burned into my mind and couldn't stop a small chuckle, god this movie is so good, I miss writing like this this is why I moved to anime for moments like this where the characters are not just a character but living breathing people who act like it.
