The Slinky was originally invented in 1943, successfully marketed in 1945, and gained unnatural popularity in the 1980s and 90s. The small ones never work because they are too thick and too tight. Classic metal is always the best. *^_^* I do find it funny that a lot of the junk toys from yesteryear are now popular and called "fidget toys". *^_^*
@pinkerbot6 ай бұрын
Agree - however i do remember the slinkies being popular in the 70s too.

@pinkerbot They were. It was just way out of proportion in the 1980s and 90s. They're not so cool you need to have every one that exists.
@pinkerbot6 ай бұрын
@@LynKora i think it was different in Europe, but then again, maybe i just wasnt that interrested when the 80s came along 😁
@LynKora6 ай бұрын
@pinkerbot Yeah. Probably. I'm in the U.S. and that time was all bright colors and weird trends. I also experienced Pogs, Beanie Babies, and the beginning of the anime obsession. Not saying any of these things weren't around before or after. Just the amount of obsession was high. It's kinda like the Stanley cup trend right now. If you don't have this stuff, you're an outcast. I was an outcast anyway, so trends don't grab me as hard. *^_^* It IS nice to see some of the things I wanted then reappearing on the shelves now, though. *^_^*
@grayhatjen59246 ай бұрын
I knew some stuff was poking at my brain about this Slinky stuff, but I couldn't remember exactly what, so I went and had a looksie. (Apologies, I just took a migraine pill to cut said migraine off before it hits. I would wait to write about all this bit it just has me so smiley that I remembered some of this correctly!) I was pretty sure Slinky was one of those products/toys that had Pennsylvania ties. And PA being a steel (and other metal alloys) state made it a no-brainer. The one thing that I was hung up on was that it was wartime. Scrap drives were a big deal. So where did this Richard James dude get any metal at all to fiddle around with. When I saw where he and his wife Betty were living at the time, it was very much a "duh, Jen!" moment. They were in the Philly area, a place that not a lot of people equate with US Naval stuffs, but that it very much is. And so it went, 1943 rolls around and Richard T James was working as a mechanical engineer (not that it matters, but it looks like he was a civilian contractor with the US Navy.) Dude was working on how in the heck to stabilize all of the highly sensitive equipment, when he dropped one of the springs he had been working with, and it kept moving. Took it home, showed his wife Betty James, and things were off like a rocket. Over the next two years they managed to crank out 400 Slinkys. Richard set up a deal with Gimbles in Philly that he could display the toy on. Betty picked the name. There was some quibbling between Richard and Betty re: price. He thought they should be $5, she thought that they should be $1 so as not to exclude families of lower incomes. (I'd do the conversion, but I can say 1000% that $5 would have been RIDICULOUS. Thankfully, Betty won.) Folks, they sold out in 90 minutes. But, five years later the Slinky was already losing its shine. And this is the part that I find most interesting, although it is admittedly not the ideal situation. 1960 found Richard involved in some kind of religious group, so he packed up and moved to BOLIVIA. Didn't take Betty. Didn't take any of their SIX kids. And left their once gangbusters company on the verge of bankruptcy. So what did Betty do? She yoinked that bull right by the horns. Became the CEO of James Industries, moved the company and her family to Hollidaysburg where the company exists to this day, figured out a marketing campaign, did ALL THE THINGS. In 1960. May I humbly submit that Betty James was one heck of a pioneer for women in the work place. I mean, a freaking CEO in 1960. That's just... I don't even know what it is besides awesome. Okay, unrequested history lesson over. Full, disclosure, I did have to go and look up some deets and dates, so this isn't 100% from memory. (I think I forgot to mention that Pennsylvania genealogy & history are kind of my jam, hence the impromptu word vomit.) ✌🏻

The original metal slinky is amazing to fidget with for me. I had one as a kid in the 70's. I still have one, something about moving it back and forth from left to right, the sound of the metal, the feel of the slinky going from one hand to another, the metallic smell, it's bliss for me. The plastic ones I despise. They lack most of the sensory fun of the original.
