Your textures are awesome! I can also testify that I am one of those who failed to see the amount of work that layed upon me when I decided to re-texture Minecraft, and I would like to underline what Nerrel mentioned in the first seconds of the video; If you decide to embark yourself on such a mission, please be ready for countless hours of work. Not only in creating new textures, but also in researching, organising files, learning techniques, testing and even retouching of already-made textures. A single texture can take several hours to make. A typical game can have hundreds, or maybe even thousands of textures in need of change. To think, on top of creating a masterful texture pack, on top of putting out increasingly high-quality videos showcasing said pack, and on top of cleanly articulating the methodology behind your artistic choices, that you were able to share with us a video like this is nothing short of legendary. There's so much genuinely educational content packed into this upload that I'm starting to wonder if you shouldn't be teaching the next generation of digital artists. Every once in a while, I find someone on KZbin who I think is criminally underrated. I get this feeling about Nerrel every time I watch one of his videos. This one, though, this one absolutely blew me away. Before watching it, I knew that undertaking something like retexturing Majora's Mask was huge, but it blows my mind just how much work goes into something like this. I occasionally do texturing at my job, and it's taken a long time to get even the basics down pat. The amount of knowledge he has, not only on the technical side but the art side of it, too, is incredible. All the different layers and tweaking settings and filtering light effects combined with a grasp of art principles-it's honestly astounding. I love that balance: you have to know the technical side of the programs, how they work, and how they can be used to modify existing software, AND you have to have that passion for the project and eye for how something looks. And then I get to credits and I see that Nerrel arranged one of the pieces of music?? And he's funny? What the fuck? Keep up the great work, I've never used a texture pack with a ROM before, but I'll definitely get into it now after watching your process.

You can always tell a good software tutorial when it doesn't have the name of any software in the title. There are a couple things I noticed watching the video that you might want to know. Firstly, I'd recommend always using Addition (or some equivalent) when drawing light, it mimics how light actually affects the scenery much more accurately; ensuring that a source of light can never darken and mixes the colors of light much more accurately. You'll want your brush and your light layer (I like to have a layer for every light source) to both use the same mode when you're working with light or shadow and this can be a pain to keep track of so I'd recommend using Brush Presets and often as possible, and prefixing the brush name with number to keep them organised when sorted alphabetically. Secondly, you should start using palettes for color picking, this is especially the case when you're basing you're color scheme on a reference image. The color picker even has an "add to palette" option so it couldn't be any easier. Thirdly, this is particularly relevant for the lamp texture at the beginning. Both Krita and GIMP have symmetry modes. They both have significant flaws which you'll probably become familar with but they're better then nothing. Krita's tiling view is very useful for simple tiling textures but for everything else I think GIMP's implementation is more reasonably implemented. Finally, you can put mathematical expressions into value boxes in GIMP and a lot of other software too. If you want to multiply a texture size by 32 you can just put "*32" after the pixel value, you shouldn't ever need to take out a cacluator for this stuff.

Not only on "how to do them" but also explaining the graphical direction involved in making them (Like not just pasting a picture, but working with digital visual media and how we perceive the abstract reality in it). I think this should be a point of reference for anyone willing to make either texture packs or just textures. Great job. BTW, wouldn't be a bad a idea to have "development progress" speed paint videos just to fill the gap every once in a while, maybe commentating a little on the art direction. But, that's just me.

Heya Nerrel, Back when you first started this series, I was incredibly intrigued and gleefully watched every development as you shared them on your channel. When you posted this video, though, was when I was taken by the idea of doing my own retexture pack some day. I mostly put it to the back of my mind, knowing what a massive scope such a project had, but these days I find myself thinking about it again. The game I want to retexture is Kirby 64, for a bunch of reasons - for the one thing I love it, but the main pragmatic reason is that I feel it won't be nearly as gargantuan of a task as the MM retexture was. To this end, I'd like to ask - how did you organise the textures by area? When they dump, do they automatically create their own folders, or did you have to go in with every dump and put them in their own folder? How do you not get lost and accidentally put textures from one area in with another? Organisation is key to a smooth workflow for this kind of thing and I want to get in front of that first. Thank you so much, both for your reply, and for these videos that inspired me (and others!) in the first place.

Something I've been thinking about for a while is to create an ever growing library of hand drawn gray scale seamless textures of common materials, like brick/stone patterns, concrete details, rust, moss, grass, etc. All done at pretty high resolutions so they can work for stuff that needs high detail, but also scaled down as needed to fit pretty much any need. Then I can just pull from that library instead of stock photos to quickly get a starting point for new textures/materials.

I don’t really plan on doing this myself, but I would def watch tutorials like this for hours

I just started college majoring in game art and this video has been a huge help with texture painting. Thanks for the good content!
