Thank you for the informative video! I just got google fiber in my neighborhood and google supplied two WiFi 6e pros. My question is can I connect both my tv and my ps5 to the two Ethernet ports on the back of the extender. I know one port is meant for internet coming in but it seems to be supplying my tv with internet access but it seems slow. Should I just connect my tv via WiFi instead of wired?

Great video, thank you! Nest + switch + wired backhaul to another Nest and Ethernet to various rooms seems like the way to go for my particular situation. I've been advised to look at adding a 'patch panel' as well, where would this get added and what's the advantage?
@landpet
@landpet Жыл бұрын
Patch panels are meant for organizing cables. They’re passive unlike a switch which actually routes data. There are a few good articles about it that go into more detail such as www.fiberonellc.com/patch-panel-vs-switch/ Do you need a patch panel? I don’t know, I personally don’t need one, I don’t have enough cables that would require it to organize them.

@@landpet”unlike a switch which actually routes data” pedant here, a switch switches data, a router routes it. There are of course multi layer switches which have limited routing capabilities and your average home router combines those router/switch functions too just to confuse everyone 😂

I did Wired Backhaul from Upstairs to Downstairs because we have T-Mobile 5G Home Internet and we get the best Signal and Speeds from the main T-Mobile 5G Home Internet Gateway being Upstairs and now we get the same Speeds Upstairs and Downstairs. I wouldn't say any Brand Network Switch I would definitely recommend getting only Name Brand Network Switches such as TP-Link or NetGear.

Scenario... I have two Google Nest Wifi Pro devices. One is connected directly to the modem and used as a router. The second is only plugged into power and acts as a wireless "point." My question is if I connect an ethernet cable from the unwired point directly to my computer, will those speeds be faster than the point wirelessly connecting to that computer? The internet my computer is receiving will still be wireless, as it is now, but I'm wondering if the fact that I connect that wireless point to the computer with an ethernet cable, if it'll increase my speeds. Thanks so much; your videos are some of the best online.

You can connect the Google router to your existing router. That way your Google router is an Ethernet switch. At the same time you can connect your Google wifi extender to your Google router. And you can connect the extra Ethernet switch to the original router. So that way you have many Ethernet ports.

Are you saying you can keep an existing router, and instead just simply connect the google mesh system to that router (instead of removing that existing router entirely)? I have a Comcast modem, and a multi-port router connected to it, hence I can't just replace that existing router with the google nest when I need all those ports on the existing router

Thank you for this very informational video. I understand that when setting up 3 or more Wi-Fi pro router mesh with wired back haul , we need to connect primary router (connected to modem) to router 2 and from router 2 to 3 and from 3 to 4 and so on. This because each router has one ‘out’ port to connect to the next router. You also indicated how an unmanaged lan switch could be used to connect multiple devices. I have a question regarding this - can we connect an unmanaged lan switch to primary router and then connect router 2, 3 , 4, 5 & so on to the multiple ports of the unmanaged switch. If yes, will it work as good as connecting router 1 (primary) to router 2 and router 2 to 3 and so on (both wired back haul). Looking forward to your expert advice. Thanks.

Sure but it will not be managed by Google. The other one would have to run in access point mode to pick up the signals from Google. It’s not something I recommended. The tp link deco is better setup for that since they have inside units and one dedicated for outside usage which can be controlled easily from the same deco app.

Great video. Say I connect these two via ethernet. Will both units still act as wireless as well? Basically asking if the "router" that is connected to the modem AND other nest via ethernet will still serve as a wireless router to other devices.
@landpet
@landpet Жыл бұрын
Thanks! Short answer: yes Long answer: Yes they still emit a wifi signal and devices connect to the one they're typically closer to. Technically, the secondary nest wifi pro is no longer acting as a router whether it's connected wired or wireless. Unless you have an intended purpose, you don't want to routers on the same network.

Great info, thanks for sharing! Question; I have 1 Nest wifi router w/ 3 wifi points (my mesh) & I have 18 nest cameras, 10 google lights, 2 nest hubs, a wifi LG frig & a nest thermostat all wifi connected. Since I’ve added the last camera & frig I’ve noticed that my cameras keep going off line, which is very frustrating. In order to fix this should I add another Nest wifi router & do a wired back call or should I add another wireless wifi point to my mesh somewhere else in my home? Every time I do a network check I get a “your internet speed is blazing fast!” Download 415 & upload 11. Lastly the weakest point is the wifi point I have in my garage which is not attached to my home, both r brick. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank u!

Hey, I have a question that I haven’t really been able to find a definitive answer to so far. I plan on using 3 of these in my home. Hello, thanks for the video pretty helpful. If I understand correctly one of the nests has to be the Master and the others (the Spokes) need to be connected to it via wifi or ethernet and cannot talk to the modem directly. Meaning that I cannot connect one of my Spokes directly to my modem using a CPL plug, the CPL connection has to be from the Master to a CPL appliance then to another CPL appliance to the Spoke. Am I right ? If so in terms of routing the Master will also see all the inbound and outbound traffic at some point right ?

When I am going from the first router Google WiFi Pro router to the second room, do I connect first on the second room first on the 2nd Google WiFi Pro and then connect the second Google WiFi Pro to the unmanaged switch OR first to the unmanaged switch and then connect the unmanaged switch to the second Google WiFi Pro ? What is the difference between this two options ?
@landpet
@landpet 6 ай бұрын
For the most part, there’s not much of a difference. The most important part is connect your modem to the nest WiFi router. After that you can connect things in almost any order. It’s more about your preference. The technical difference is minimal between where you connect your switch and would only make a difference in very rare cases. I can make a whole video explaining it lol. The short version is there’s almost no difference.

Wow ! I'm upgrading from original Nest Wifi to Nest Wifi Pro and you mentioned I wouldn't have to re-connect all of my 20+ devices as long as I use the same exact Wifi name and password? That is HUGE! Hope that works because I was dreading having to re-connect all of my IoT stuff when I changed routers (lights, thermostats, cameras etc.) Also, what exactly does switching to Bridge Mode on the modem do? I just received a brand new 6E cable company modem/router combo .. if I plug my Nest Wifi Pro into that, you mentioned I need to switch modem into Bridge mode .. does that just disable the router portion of the unit, so the modem isn't working with TWO routers then? (being the internal one AND the external Nest). Thanks so much.
@landpet

Correct in both questions. 1. Yes, remember the wifi name and password are both case sensitive. 2. Yes, bridge mode disables the router portion of the modem so you wont have 2 routers when you connect the nest

Still some questions remained unanswered -- can I instead just simply connect the google nest system to an existing router? I have a complex setup for one of my businesses and need to keep the existing router in place (so I have an ISP modem, with a router connected to it). The router has other devices connected to it

Best to get a mesh that can run in access point mode, check out the TP Link Deco XE75. You can connect it that way but need to go to the deco app and set it to run in access point mode. I personally don’t recommend them at option but it should work.

What is my router is both bridge and router but does not have the option to enable bridge mode? Will this still work?
@landpet
@landpet 11 ай бұрын
Well if it's a separate router, you can just replace that with the Nest WiFi Pro. If it's a modem/router combo, typically it should have a way of disabling the router portion. If not, you can contact your ISP to request just a modem. If you have no other options, I would get a TP-Link Deco XE75 or something like that which has Access Point mode. I forget if Nest WiFi Pro supports access point mode or not.

I have an Xfinity combination Modem/Router that has 4 one gigabit ethernet outputs. Assuming I can figure out how to put the Xfinity embedded router into Bridge mode, can I choose any of the four ethernet outputs on the Xfinity box to connect to the Google Nest Router? Or is one of them 'primary' for lack of a better word? Also, if I leave the Xfinity Router active, can I connect the Google Nest Router to the Xfinity box ethernet output and choose the same SSID as the Xfinity Router?
@landpet
@landpet Жыл бұрын
Question 1: One of them should be the primary one, I would assume, it may vary based on brand but I would assume there is one "primary" one once the router is disabled. Question 2: No, if you left your Xfinity router active, you can't set it the same name as the Google Nest WiFi Pro, the signals would interfere with each other and things would just not work or time out quite often.

I have the wired backhaul but the Nest WiFi Pro Point (test mesh) keeps showing as having a weak connection and dropping internet. At 11:37 you can connect the main router Nest WiFi Pro to your old WiFi router and it's built in switch with the modem connected to its WAN port. I have AT&T fiber and you have to use their WiFi router even if you end up disabling it, it then goes to my old WiFi router that now has the WiFi disable but I'm still using it as a router.
@landpet
@landpet 6 ай бұрын
I think there’s some confusion. So at 11:37, that is not a router, it is an unmanaged switch. An unmanaged switch only expands Ethernet ports. So in my setup, I only have one router which is the nest WiFi pro. The problem seems to be you have your AT&T router that’s in use. So the nest WiFi pro and the AT&T router are essentially fighting each other with their signals which could cause slowing and drops. What I recommended, is either stick with your AT&T router (and don’t use the Nest WiFi pro) or completely disable that and just use the Nest WiFi Pro as your main router. Also just for clarity, you still need your AT&T modem to provide internet access. So if you have a modem/router built in, you would need to disable the router portion of that or call AT&T and ask them to replace that with just a modem. If you have a separate modem and a separate router provided by AT&T then you would just omit the AT&T router and connect the nest WiFi pro directly to the AT&T modem to set that up as your router. Hope this helps. I would also recommend watching my Network 101 | Simplified explanation of a Computer Network kzbin.info/www/bejne/b2Gld6t3Z954i7s

No more than 5 is what Google recommends. Unless you are doing wired backhaul, I personally wouldn't recommend the nest wifi pro for a place that large. You would need something much more powerful like the TP Link Deco BE85 or Netgear RBKE963.

When using the wireless backhaul, if i plug the other one in a another room could I connect my computer via ethernet? Like I should be able to take the second one and plug it up and power on and use one of the ethernet switch for my computer correct? (not regarding how fast speeds are, just will it work) I've looked online but I'm not getting a consistent answer. Thank you

Yes, that will work. Speeds will not be great but it will work. While I haven't tried it with the Nest WiFi Pro, I have tried it with the Nest WiFi and a bunch of other mesh systems. I have yet to try one that doesn't work.

@landpet
@landpet Жыл бұрын
Check the wireless backhaul speeds from my review here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aGXbmJ-mh5eSZsU Connecting a wired device to a wireless backhaul node will give you the best possible wireless backhaul speeds of that nest wifi pro. This will depend on your internet speeds but I imagine there will be some drop in performance compared to connecting an ethernet to the main router.

Is having units placed too close an issue/concern with mesh wifi? Where I live the Nest WiFi Pro is only available in 1 pack or 3 pack, and getting two separately are the same price as the 3 pack. My home is quite small (120 sq m - 1300 sq ft) and I'd think two units would be enough, but if it's not a concern, I might just get the 3 pack since the price is the same..
@landpet

You could get a 3 pack and just use two as well. If that works fine, you could in theory sell the third one.

Hi, posted a quesiton but was able to solve. Just a quick addiontal one: made a wired backhaul with 2 wired APs and 1 wireless AP. Turns to be that sometimes the wireless shows excellent connection while the wired shoes "good" only. Any idea?
@landpet
@landpet 11 ай бұрын
Doesn't make sense to me, but just run speed tests nearby as long as it's very good then you're good to go. For wired backhaul, you should get the same speeds by the node or by the main router assuming your internet speeds are 1Gbps or less with this device.

As long as it’s connected correctly, if you reboot the entire mesh it should pick it up. Most of the time you don’t even need a reboot. Now in the rare case it’s still showing wireless backhaul even though yours is properly connected via Ethernet. I would go near it and do a speed test and go near your main router and do another speed test there. If the speeds are relatively similar, then it’s on wired backhaul even if the app doesn’t show it.

it should only be enabled if you have a 6 octet IP address in your country which most places in the world do not have. In America, it's IPv4, you don't need IPv6.

Hello. I currently have a wireless gateway which I use along a unmanaged switch. I use all 4 ethernet ports on the gateway, plus the ports on the switch, plus the wireless connection from the gateway. Can I only turn off the wifi signal from the gateway, and still use the ports from both devices plus the Google mesh? Or I need to switch the gateway to bridge and solely connect it to the mesh, and then all my devices after the mesh? I hope the question is not confusing. Basically, since I have many devices connected via ethernet, and my switch does not have enough ports, I would like to know if I can still use my gateway ports. Thanks for the help.
@landpet
@landpet Жыл бұрын
If you just disable the WiFi portion of your gateway, you can still use all the ports on it because you didn’t stop it from being a router. You just stopped it’s wireless broadcast. When you connect the Google mesh system, it will create a separate network which you may not want, hence it’s easier to run your gateway in bridge mode and have your Google be the main router, however based on what you said, you would need to replace your switch to add more ports or you can keep your switch and add another switch to provide enough ports.

@landpet Thanks for the help. I end up just turning the wifi signal off from the gateway, and still use all the ports from the gateway, plus the ports for the switch without any other changes to the gateway settings. It's working very good, nice strong signal from the mesh. The only thing was, there's no way to create a 2.4 and a 5ghz wifi signal independently, it's only one, and with that, I had to change the settings on some of my devices that only connect to 2.4. Other than that, this device it's very good.
