The craziest part is that Sokka's sexism is only a thing for the first FOUR episodes of the original series. It's brought up in the first episode, becomes a plot point in the fourth episode, and is basically RESOLVED by the end of that same episode. I don't ever recall him having an issue with Aunt Wu for being female, or agreeing with Paku's sexist beliefs, or ever looking down on Toph, or Azula and her crew. And Kyoshi Warriors is the SECOND episode of the Netflix series! They literally couldn't bring themselves to let a main character have a flaw for ONE EPISODE.

They should’ve had Katara steal the water bending scroll from Kyoshi island. Aang could’ve had a confrontation with her but she uses the reasoning, “it belongs to my tribe and they stole it” similar to the original. Maybe she tells Aang she’ll give it back but doesn’t, and then the mayor finds out that she stole from them and goes to kick them out. But wait! While they’re leaving they see Zhao and Zuko so Katara redeems herself by fighting for the village or being the one who warns them. Subplots aren’t that hard guys.

Modern writers need to learn that SHOWING is not the same thing as ACCEPTING. Showing Sokka being sexist is not the same thing as saying its okay to be sexist. _Especially_ since the entire point of Sokka's sexism in the original is to challenge the idea. There isn't a single moment in the entire show where someone gets away with being sexist. Whenever it happens they immediately oppose it, or shame the person doing it. Its ALWAYS portrayed as a negative trait. The original Avatar is one of the most anti-sexist shows I've ever seen. Not only does it say its wrong to treat women badly, it does so in a way that doesn't actively turn the hate towards men. So many modern movies and shows will actively hate men and tell the audience that women are BETTER. That's not equality, that's revenge. You don't fix prejudice by flipping it around to the other side.

Yep. Like Suki has a good line about it right at the beginning when Sokka tells her he was viewing her as a girl rather than a warrior. Sukki actually corrects him still. “I am a warrior. But I’m also a girl.” The two are not mutually exclusive after all and she still gets to be girly and feminine whilst also being an absolute badass. And thats the thjng with avatar. The characters are layered and different. Ty Lee, Mai, Katara, Sukki, Toph…. All of them so different as women and so differently strong yet not less or more or better or worse than the rest. Ty Lee is the most airheaded person ever… yet she is also smart in a different way and a very strong opponent despite not being a bender. Stuff like that. Hollywood is missing that mark though. Same with Annabeth in the percy jackson show. Girl characters arent allowed to have flaws. Well, in general characters because hollywood is afraid that even showcasing bad behaviour as bad behaviour will be taken as if its promoting it or condoning it. And sadly there are people who actually do think like that. Ive met people who looked at movies where sexist or even creepy guys were portrayed (and not even remotely in a good way, said movies were MEANT to make you uncomfortable and look at the creeps as bad) and they declared that said movies or series are creepy guys’ fantasies and it appeals to them. Like… no. You were supposed to hate it. But these people think that they are the only ones hating it while the movie is advocating for it, which it isnt. Same as making Sokka sexist as per his actual character and rhen unlearning it. There wouldve been people who wouldve thought it was promoting sexism, when its the polar opposite since he’s shamed for it constantly until he unlearns it.

The whole point of season one is showing aangs age, immaturity and refusal of the call. He doesnt want to be the avatar, he wants to have fun, he doesnt want to have the responsibility and hes deflecting his pain and grief from the loss of his monk family into procrastinating. Through the episodes, aang learns alot of life lessons and honestly its my fav season for aangs development.
@FishStickOnAStick9 ай бұрын
Aang doesn't necessarily refuse the call to be the Avatar, he did in The Storm flashback, but the circumstances were different back then. Warriors of Kyoshi shows him being perfectly content in his role as the Avatar since he gets admiration from kids his age instead of rejection, and he's so eager to learn as much as he can as fast as he can that he rushes and learns firebending out of order, while Netflix Aang is too reluctant to even waterbend. Not to say that Aang doesn't undergo a lot of character growth in the first season, but this idea that he was always refusing the call to action is just not true. He responded to the call to action to do his Avatar duties such as when he helped the village being attacked by Hei Bai since the Avatar is the big spirit bridge and all that, he just didn't know what he was doing and wasn't in a rush until he got advice and direction from Roku. Aang's characterization in this new series is going to be a big talking point going forward, but I can't equate the arcs that the two characters go on at all, they're just completely different.
@kiriavatar1239 ай бұрын
@@FishStickOnAStick i didnt say always refusing the call, and yes, i agree with you, he does take his avatar role seriously (albiet clumsily) but i was speaking in response to the show in which they wanted Aang to feel the role of the avatar and for him to solely take that role seriously. He doesn't soley refuse the call, as well as he doesnt soley take his avatar duties seriously ( as he goes to kyoshi island to ride the giant serpent) Whereas i think his procastination is a huge part of his growth in S1 not just for him but also for katara as we get to know who she is as we discover her neuturing side, she is able to help him explore his emotional wounds n why he deflects. i just felt that that part of Aangs personality was missing in live action. I felt that they missed the part where hes just a kid. Being the avatar is a huge burdon. Its even worse if you belived you already failed by sleeping for 100 years. I think the animated show provides an interesting question. "your the savior of the world, but your also 12 years old, what would a kid do?"

Glowing representations of the Avatar: One explanation which is a bit of a stretch but does make the most sense given what we see in the animated show is this. Aang had not connected properly with the Raava spirit. Therefore, when he manifested the spirit under the water, he was just connecting with a fraction. or the spirit was forcing itself into Aang to save him. He wasn't connecting with the previous Avatar spirits, and they weren't aware of his presence. Following that, when he waterbended on Zuko's ship, it was a similar situation - a very brief exchange that was barely tapping into the power and didn't have enough gravitas to register outside of his little spiritual bubble. Then he goes back his home which is ruined, and finds his friend who is a long-dead corpse. He's in a spiritual place, with significance to both the Avatar and himself. Instead of escaping after what could have been hours after Zuko captured him, or after however long he was struggling against the storm, he is very suddenly shown that, yes, they are all dead, and he is alone. It's a very shocking thing, and he was left open and vulnerable, like a wound. This allowed him to truly open up similar to how Korra did at the end of Book of Air, the Raava spirit was able to truly invest in him, and their combined Avatar energy was truly able to flow, and that is why that is the first time all of the representations light up for Aang. It's a li'l clunky, it requires a bit of a stretch, but it does fit with the world's lore and also explains why we see what we see in the order we see it in the animated show.

22:08 I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Warriors, is in fact, Kyoshi/Warriors, or as I've recently taken to calling them, Kyoshi plus Warriors. Warriors are not just a fighting force unto themselves, but rather an integral part of the Kyoshi system made formidable by the Kyoshi core techniques, combat strategies, and essential warrior training comprising a full Kyoshi's defense. Many allies of Avatar Aang encounter the Kyoshi Warriors every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of Kyoshi which is widely known today is often called Warriors, and many of its allies are not aware that it is basically the Kyoshi system, developed by the Kyoshi Order. There really are Kyoshi Warriors, and these warriors are fiercely dedicated, but they are just a part of the system they belong to. Warriors are the guardians: the elite protectors in the system that uphold peace and justice. Warriors are an essential part of the Kyoshi's defense, but incomplete by themselves; they can only fulfill their purpose in the context of the complete Kyoshi system. Warriors are normally found in combination with the Kyoshi way of life: the whole system is basically Kyoshi with Warriors added, or Kyoshi/Warriors. All the so-called Kyoshi tribes are really tribes of Kyoshi/Warriors!

The winter solstice episodes are like 6-7 episodes thats not even the half way point of the first season which is 20 episodes. I do think the pacing could’ve been a bit better but at the same time aang spending the beginning goofing off and visiting different places is good world building because we actually come back to some of these places later. Honestly, calling Sokka's behavior "sexist" discredits actual sexism. He's just a kid. It's not like he actually hates females and is actively sabotaging their ability to have rights or anything. He just thinks boys are stronger/smarter/whatever because he's a dumb kid. Plus he's never been anywhere outside his tribe, where he's been the alpha male out of necessity.
@fretzil9 ай бұрын
it's still sexism, just very mild sexism, as was taught to him by how water tribe society works. he is not a raging misogynist though, you're right there
@robchuk41369 ай бұрын
Thank you. "Sexism" is a loaded word that makes what the cartoon was doing sound WAAAY worse than what was actually happening.
@FreyjaRKim9 ай бұрын
It is still sexist, but I agree that he was just a kid and a product of necessity and his culture. I remember thinking "oh no wonder Sokka is like that" when they arrived in the North Pole.
@areeba70459 ай бұрын
Dude what are you talking about?? Sexism comes in many different forms. The concept of sexism can't be downplayed by calling someone out for their sexism because you don't deem it that serious. In fact, his so called "childlike" sexism is something common with most people that grows worse into adulthood for a lot of people. I don't know if you realise this, but believing boys are "stronger/smarter/whatever" is in fact, sexist, even for children.
@steak-enjoyer9 ай бұрын
Dont bother, “sexism” is always a considered a net negative instead of a neutral descriptor. People will crucify you for not siding with this. Sokka is sexist in the sense that he believes in traditional patriarchal roles. This is not negative or positive, so don’t feel the need to explain it to people, you don’t owe anyone that. It is based on the objective fact that men are consistently physically stronger than women and inclined to combat/physical roles. Oh no, the horrors of reality…

I kinda liked the Water Scroll change, but you bring up some good points. However I do think it makes more sense that an adult would be in charge of Kyioshi instead of some kids- Unless the island has a Lord of The Flies situation going on... On the issue of performancs, I know people want to be nice because they are kids, but we've gotten so many good child performances lately (including Netflix's own Stranger Things) that I feel we shouldn't make excuses anymore. One note I'll say (speaking from experience) is that bad acting is usually on the actor. It may sometimes be the fault of bad directing, but producers usually don't have anything to do with that. The only way an exec could be responsible for a sucky performance is if they insisted on keeping a bad actor on the project when the director would rather have someone else.

Look I’m not a Netflix avatar defender but…. Most of the complaints (especially in the early parts of the video ) are quite bad They seem to want to paint the show in an unnecessarily negative light in situations where it shouldn’t. Don’t get me wrong the show is bad, but you gave really dumb or over exaggerated reasons to say it is in parts that aren’t that bad. At some points even taking context in wrong ways, it def got a lot better near the end of the vid but the start was rough

Its really weird to criticize the fire sages thing when you show footage of Fire sages who had betrayed the Avatar. Pretty bad faith
@nicovelardita86199 ай бұрын
As you could tell, by the lines of the sage in the video, the fire sages at the start of the war were loyal to the avatar. In time they were corrupted, but by the time of Sozin they still were good. So no, it's not bad faith, you just need to understand some extra context of the lines. Sozin shouldn't be talking like that in front of them 100 years ago, because at that time they weren't loyal to him (as far as the cartoon canon states, NATLA could be different)
@IsraelLlerena9 ай бұрын
@@nicovelardita8619that’s actually such a good point. I honestly didn’t get the criticism but yeah. The fire sage is talking to Sozin BEFORE the avatar vanished, which ultimately was the reason why the sages changed loyalties. So yeah you’re right this change in events don’t really make sense during this time period
@john529339 ай бұрын
You’re right about the fact that its possible the Avatar’s disappearance is what lead to the cartoon sages to be corrupted. Its the matter of factly way he said there’s no way a Fire Sage would betray the Avatar, but they’re not in fact incorruptible
@FishStickOnAStick9 ай бұрын
I probably should have added the line where Shyu explains that the Fire Sages grew disillusioned with the Avatar after waiting for so long for the sake of context, but I wasn't sure how necessary that was.
@questmaster019 ай бұрын
@@john52933 It's moreso about how the Fire Sages of Sozin's time would never betray the Avatar; sure, 100 years later, the descendants would be pissed, understandably so, but for the people who likely helped serve Roku? Belting out your plan to murder your master's next life sounds like a really dumb idea.

Fourth option was actually Zuko defeating the avatar in combat and capturing him lmao you think he wanted to die?? No he wanted to face the great warrior to defeat him and prove himself. I’m not even tryna defend the show but your logic there is kinda flawed. The fifth option is both of them sustain mortal wounds and die having killed the other. Jussayin man don’t critique the show for your lack of thinking.
@theendersmirk58519 ай бұрын
That's fairish, but I think his point was more "The Avatar's plan should be one of these options", and Zuko got the most probable option with a low mortality rate.
@Gojeto3469 ай бұрын
@@theendersmirk5851no his criticism was Zuko’s reaction of him fleeing is stupid because Zuko should want to die or expects the avatar to be captured. His criticism is just invalid and stupid. There’s way more shit that is actually stupid and deserves to be called out.
@theendersmirk58519 ай бұрын
@@Gojeto346 the criticism seemed more "if Zuko believed Aang to be the ultimate warrior, these are the three outcomes." Now granted, probably Zuko being overconfident, but there is something odd about his train of thought there that is odd.

Okay man. We get it. You hate this new series but there is no reason for you to do 8 episodes of just belittling the series. We all love the original avatar and this new version has its flaws but the people working behind it truly are trying to tell a different story than the original. If everything was 1 to 1 why don't just watch the animated version. They are trying something different and you need to realize that
@robchuk41369 ай бұрын
There is every reason to do all 8 episodes. The new series just gets that much wrong (jk. Sorta 😅) . I'm actually finding these very educational when it comes to what makes good writing (and it's making the original cartoon look even smarter than I realized, which is pretty cool) Just saying it failed so let's move on, isn't very useful.

Well if they're trying to tell a different story than the original, why is so much of it just the original but bad? Why not just have an entire story based on the political intrigue of the Fire Nation royal children? A series about Kyoshi? Roku? Yangchen? Why do we need to constantly gut the original characters to make it work within the confines of Live Action?
@speedylewder1209 ай бұрын
I was laughing at the kyoshi spirit puppet like oh yes let me show you what to do while I do everything So I like the fact aang just for no reason knows what to tell katara how to water bend even though your an air bender and yet you don't choose to learn how to bend water at all
@lasercraft329 ай бұрын
If the Avatar can just do that and have all the bending skills of the previous Avatar, then why does Aang need to learn or do anything? Why can't Kyoshi or Roku just take over for him and beat up Ozai? It brings up too many questions, its a huge lore inconsistency.
