So genuinely, you guys missed out on a major part of this, which is that the Satanic Temple isn't actually satanic. They're secular humanists who use the trappings of a religion to point out the hypocrisy of the Christian right. Their argument seems to be that by associating their imagery with "actual" Satanists, it gives people the wrong idea of what they're trying to do. I highly suggest reading up more on the Satanic Temple and their good works. ("Good" is assuming you think separation of church and state is good.)

Im really dissapointed in you alls lack of research regarding this topic. TST (whose headquarters are in Salem btw) have released an offical statement: In regards to the recent announcement of The Satanic Temple’s intent to take legal action against Netflix and Warner Brothers: Netflix recently started streaming a show entitled “The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina”, a supernatural horror series dealing with various Hollywood tropes of witchcraft, devil worship and evil forces. Of note is the show’s appropriation of The Satanic Temple’s (TST) Baphomet statue to represent said Satanic Panic tropes which comes as a dismay to most TST leaders, most notably Executive Ministry, given Netflix and Warner Brother’s blatant neglect in requesting permission to use the image in this show. The show’s creators did not utilize a generic Sabbatic goat that is commonly used in many occult circles, such as the image created by Eliphas Levi, but instead created an identical and easily identifiable replica of TST’s statue. Unlike most imagery associated with Satanism, the unique Baphomet statue designed and built for TST is copyrighted, which grants the creator exclusive rights to determine whether, and under what conditions, this original work may be used by others. When one does not actively protect their copyright material, especially by legal means, it becomes more and more difficult to establish standing as more and more egregious violations occur. This is especially important given the legal battles currently underway establishing our legitimacy and religious liberty that our Baphomet image is at the forefront of and therefore does not fall within a frivolous categorization so easily thrown around. Years of careful and deliberate design element decisions, personal fund investments where crowdfunding fell short, and many more years of elaborating the meaning of this monument to those that would silence us has not been done for the sake of a good laugh. The cultivation of all of these efforts into a powerful symbol of religious liberty for the unjustly maligned, and symbolic of TST itself, deserves to be preserved and not allowed to fall to the whimsy of entertainment stereotypes. Due to this, permission should have been sought to use the image from the copyright holders (TST) who would determine if the usage would be done in a responsible and/or beneficial manner that would not sully the symbol’s importance to our members. Given the show’s utilization of the Baphomet statue to represent an evil cannibalistic cult, a perception falsely associated with Satanism even in modern times, TST would have denied its use to the show creators. Not only does it contradict what Baphomet represents, we owe it to those who identify with us to not allow this image, and by extension them, to be represented in this way. Legal counsel has been consulted on the legitimacy of the case and they have agreed we have a clear claim of copyright infringement. Letters have been sent to both Netflix and Warner Brothers requesting that all renditions of the Baphomet statue be removed from their media and that they cease its use going forward.

mooseback333 then why would they even bother to sue? You can’t have it both ways. If you are mocking religion then don’t claim a demon posed for the statue. They are using that as a legitimate defense. They are not mocking anything but themselves. It makes them look crazy.

@@christianrapper They have to use fantasy and religious logic when doing these things. The PR and exposure for them justifies the drama.

I don't think the lawsuit is as solid as it seems. The design was meant to be a public monument and has been displayed as such. That often negates certain aspects of copyright (which is why you can replicate the White House/Capital Building/Statue of Liberty). Additionally, if it is religious iconography that typically falls into public domain/fair use. The Catholic Church couldn't sue about how a cross was used in the Exorcist even if they didn't like it. They may have a genuine copyright claim, but it's more of a gray area than it seems. Netflix will probably settle, but it's not the slam dunk I've seen it discussed as in terms of a definite win for the Satanic Temple.

@@Koooo4 No, I really do. I followed it on twitter before it jumped onto news sites. They claim they have copyright on the particular image of Baphomet. The artist gave the TST the rights to how and when to use the artwork. The TST then filed petitions claiming the work was a public monument. Public monuments cede certain aspects of copyright. So as I said -- not as solid as it seems.

@@lindsaym.h.3583 "Public monuments cede certain aspects of copyright." Except that they really dont. And certainly not when it comes to a statue.
@DSzaks6 жыл бұрын
I think the point here is that the catholic church couldn't sue if a cross was used. But they could sue if an artist sculpted a unique cross design and then a movie used that exact cross without the artist permission. That is what the lawsuit is about. Not that Satan or Baphomet was used but that they used a likeness that was uniquely developed by their church.
@lindsaym.h.35836 жыл бұрын
@@Koooo4 Except they really do. Monuments and Memorials displayed on US Gov. land cede the majority of copyright. Gaylord v. US found that the artist can retain some rights to the work outside of the freedom of panorama and in this case the artist (which is not TST) would be able to claim copyright over the statue itself. However, the contracts between TST and the artist and the paperwork filed between the TST and the state gov's of Oklahoma and Arkansas may make those copyright claims null. A case could also come into play that they argue Fair Use on the grounds that it is religious iconography.

I'm okay with this lawsuit. I don't like the inclusion of satanic worship in a society based on Wicca. Wiccans don't believe in Satan. Plus the story is also all over the place. -SPOILER- Firstly, it's bad that she signs the book, and they hinted that the baptism has to be during a blood moon which only comes every 66 years. Then suddenly it seems it's not such a bad thing after all that she signs the book to be a slave to Satan, and she signed it long after the blood moon is over. That's weirdly arbitrary. Secondly, why is a society best known for witches, not warlocks, run by a patriarchal structure? There are lots of hints that the witches are actually victims of oppression in their coven, eg. Feast of Feasts only applied to women and they're taught to believe it's an honor to be sacrificed, signs of power dynamic sexual abuse by High Priests, the High Priest wanting a male heir only, etc. Not really what witches are about. Thirdly, for a bunch of people who sold their soul for power, they seem pretty powerless. They don't even hold any power in the town's government. Weird. Lastly, I feel like they insert dark themes just for the sake of being dark. The themes don't really serve the narrative well. Plus some characters just do things that are too evil to be likeable, like Aunt Zelda. They try to make her repentant, but it just doesn't erase all those times she tortured her sister just to make herself feel good. Even Sabrina herself is a bit too wicked for people to root for.
