@r0c0c03 күн бұрын
I wouldn't say I don't understand the Church, but in the Philippines, a lot of us often say "There's the Catholic Church and then there's the CBCP." The CBCP (Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines) has some extremely controversial priests and bishops who seem to like meddling too much in politics and alienating churchgoers. A lot of the time, we feel conflicted here in my country because you have priests who use social media to make incredibly racist remarks while preaching about charity. Or whatever else the Catholic Church is doing elsewhere in the world, the CBCP puts its own rules out and alienates people more. They also allow politicians to use churches as settings for their photoshoots. Whenever a politician seeks sympathy votes, they post a photo of them "kneeling and deep in prayer" because they want to manipulate people into thinking they're really upright and moral. Then those of us Filipinos who get to go abroad experience the Catholic Church again in a way that we never experience in the Philippines. I lived in New York for 10 years and I always loathed going to the church dedicated to the Filipino community because of their priests. I would often go to other churches where I didn't feel being talked down to. And I couldn't help but compare the stark difference between Catholicism in the Philippines to my experience in New York. I have to admit that if not for my experience of Catholicism in other places, I would have become agnostic. So sometimes, I feel like I cannot be fully Catholic in my own country because my parish priest has an inflated ego and he leans more towards being a keyboard warrior and activist than actually preaching about God (and wherever I go, there's always a priest like that assigned to a parish). I sometimes wish these priests would just leave the clergy instead of turning people off, but I can't tell them that because I have a mother who insists on "respect".

Shayne, when I saw your first dry bar comedy set, I was immediately your fan. I could see your goodness. I am an adult convert to Catholicism, and I feel a sense of happiness and peace that you have had this experience. I LOVED your description of your progression of faith. Gah. As a fellow convert (still in the process), Shayne Smith crushed so many questions I still had. Some parts of his story sound so much like mine. Thank you Shayne for sharing your story. I love the way your brain works. The light of Christ shines through you and we all can see it.

His Mary testimony had me tearing up, wow. And what a boldness later mentioned (praying out in public). It's fantastic you're joining the Church!

What an amazing guest. Surely one of the most interesting people I've ever listened to. He's like a neverending fountain of passion and joy. However, as a lifelong lover of Tolkien, one thing I'll never understand is how so many other fans could be so dismissive of the movie trilogy. When that came out, it rocked my world completely and put me on a lifelong quest to try to create something with that kind of heart and impact. And then a year later, The Passion came out! What a decade for movies the 2000's were. Also, finally, I hate to be "that guy", but I can't help but point out that it was Aulë who created the Dwarves, not Manwë. :) But man, how articulate and well-rounded and just all-around fascinating is this guy? And then considering his difficult youth, it's even more impressive. He's a huge gift to the Church!

Thank you Shayne for contacting Matt and thank you Matt for hosting Shayne. This entire conversation is wonderful, but I especially love 2:36:45 to 2:45:53. Sir, you truly embody Luke 7:36-50. I pray Christopher Hitchens is with the Lord too. God bless you brother.

I would have never guessed that Shayne and I were so similar! From music taste to books, and I think that's why the Catholic Community is so beautiful to be apart of, because you don't have to fit a certain mold of type of person. You can enjoy music and books about Dragons, but also go into deep discussions about the Faith and God and that's so incredibly beautiful. Welcome to the Family, Shayne. ❤

Shane, you'll probably never see this because there are so many comments, but as a convert a few years in myself I just wanted to say thank you for your witness, and I pray for God's enduring blessings for you. And I especially pray that He will help you a few years in when sometimes the early consolations granted during conversion fade, and the complexities of life can tire us out. And for whatever it's worth I'd appreciate your prayers! I wildly need more moral courage and to get back the spirit I had at first. And it's delightful to see someone with your particular gifts come home to our Church. I especially love your witness of commitment once made! God bless you :)

I love the bit about the power and masculinity in discipline and self denial. Reminds me of the phrase “Vincit qui se vincit.” It’s so true that in any war to do anything worthwhile or to make a difference, the first and biggest battle is being able to conquer yourself and your own flaws

This was very enjoyable. I laughed and cried, very good. I coincidentally started watching this wearing my vintage Metallica shirt so that made me feel cool, like I belong here. So much about this talk made me feel good about myself and so many parts that are just brilliant that I want to clip and share. Thank you so much this man may be the most saintly person I've listen to talk on youtube. I'm excited for you to become Catholic thanks again for all the affirming going on here.

Great episode, such a blessing to listen to Shayne. This one really spoke to me in a way. I grew up in Utah, was super into the Hardcore scene in my youth (still love the music, just don't make it out to shows since I'm not currently living close to Salt Lake City anymore.) and also have been Straight Edge for 10 years now. Luckily my upbringing was a little more mellow than Shayne's though. It's really cool seeing a guy convert that I can relate to in so many ways, because it seems like he had a lot of the same worries and a similar mindset to my own. I'm not Catholic, but have been reading a bit of Catholic material when I can, as well as watching a ton of PWA. As of late, I've really been considering taking myself to Mass to experience it, but have had some nerves about it due to my appearance and not wanting to feel out of place. As well as not wanting to make others feel uncomfortable, and due to my ignorance. I'm sure I'd be welcomed with open arms, but that has been a barrier for me, to be completely blunt. But hey, maybe one day I'll manage to stumble my way into The Church, and it'll be because of guys like you two. Thank you for sharing your story Shayne, and thank you PWA for providing a platform for people to tell their story. As goofy as it may sound, it feels like I was supposed to hear this one.

I love your comment, you sound like such a genuine person. I would welcome you with open arms at Mass! I pray that when you take that step that you will find a holy, traditional parish that feels like HOME! God bless you in your journey 🙏 ❤

One of the great things about the Catholic church is that billionaires and homeless people receive the Eucharist side by side. Honestly, you won't be out of place unless you start wandering around and yelling during mass. (I'm not kidding, the drug addiction issues among the homeless make this a fairly common occurrence in cities).
