Netflix was built on the SAME failing cable-model all cable companies used. Netflix was able to avoid such cost explosions because they generally only held movies they paid RIGHTS for. Now, with Netflix adding MORE original programming AND sports...their costs of rights fees INCREASED, of course they need to pass those costs onto their customers. Cable Head-ends resisted "tiered sports" for the longest time as did providers of content, because ensuring EVERY cable subscriber paid for that service through BASIC cable made the "share cost per customer" cheaper. Netflix is following the same model and eventually will dinosaur themselves like the older cable companies did. Netflix feels the need to compete with Disney+ & Peacock and to a lesser extent, Max because they all now offer movies, shows, sports, news and events. Netflix was better off staying as a movie-only service but with more studios having their own services now, Netflix doesn't want to be shut-out of bidding. This will kill Netflix in about 5 years if not sooner.

I held a Netflix subscription since the disc days, and at the highest tiers they had for streaming until last year. I dropped other services but never Netflix. I swallowed the price hikes for years but what put me over the edge was the trifecta. Price hikes, inability to have a 4k single user plan and the crackdown of sharing the other seats I pay for, with other people. Greeeed all around! If I pay for it I should be able to use it how I see fit. I’m done with them sports or not-

Do like I plan to do. Cancel it for part of the year. Get it for a few months when there are number of things you watch queued up, then cancel it for a few months, until there is more stuff you want to watch. It's their own fault they will effectively be getting far less money from me over the course of a year, but I'll still end up watching the things I want to watch. I don't usually see most new shows as soon as they are available anyway.

So sick of Netflix, just turned it back on and considered staying subscribed. But no way. Netflix is horrible with ads and outrageously priced without. What we need is a 1080p 1 screen NO ADS, Netflix Originals ONLY plan. No sports, no live, no silly games, no outside movies or TV shows that can often be found elsewhere. Lots of Netflix content can even be found on multiple legal free options.

The last time I subscribed to Netflix I remember one of their statements on the screen about, paraphrasing, not having as many ads as one might think. The first movie I watched had (11) ad breaks. Most were only 15 secs to 30 secs but (11) lol. I cancelled the next day but I still enjoyed Netflix's content the rest of the month.

I don't ever watch Sports on TV, but yet Cable chose to charge me for their Sports and even charged me a separate Sports Fee. I’ve been a continuous Netflix customer since the beginning… like when I read a magazine article about a new service that would mail people DVDs and then you mail them back with no late fees (that beginning). I’ve always kept Netflix, even when everybody would get all upset and light their hair on fire about each subsequent price hike or password sharing crackdowns (which I honestly can say I never did) even though, I also, was of course upset about the increases. But I never thought I would cancel Netflix. I always thought it would be the last one I’d hang on to-maybe because of nostalgia, or convenience, whatever. All the others, I have had or have or had canceled or rejoined or whatever over the years, but I’ve never thought about touching that Netflix auto renewal (so I guess that’s 20+ years now, month after month). But if they think I’m about to start paying cable prices for garbage I have neither the need nor desire to watch-internet role model Jake Paul fighting real life role model Mike Tyson-or that I’m gonna be cool with them using my jacked up Netflix fees for our current president to funnel money to his education secretary’s wrestling promotion? Well then, Netflix I’ve got two words for you: bye Felicia! Amazon got my dear John letter for my Prime subscription THE DAY my last Christmas present arrived, and it looks like Netflix might not make it to Groundhog Day. The last time Netflix raised the prices I cancelled for 2 months, subscribe again at the lower tier and cancel again after I watch and catch up on shows I like. They are making very little money from me. They make it easy when they dump a whole series season on the channel all at once instead of weekly like other streamers. Bet the reason sports is a better driver for subscriptions than tv shows or movies even if they are a hit, is because you can't easily sail the seven seas for live sports coverage, but one could for pre-recorded media, not to mention the broader appeal of sports.

What's really infuriating is that Netflix "content-locks" some programming to its ad-free tier. With the recent price hike, the ad-free tier is more than double the base (ad-supported) tier.

I don't believe this is correct. It's the ad-tier that has content locks. I ran into that and bumped up my subscription. I have the ad-free plan and have seen no content locked. It's also the hardest hit price hike of the three tiers. I believe THAT is because they actually make more revenue from the ad-tier plan and they're hoping the ad-free tier subscribers drop down to the ad-tier plan. As far as I can tell, the content locked in the ad-tier seems to be for series programs, such as Vikings, etc. Network series that isn't netflix original content seems to be the stuff that gets blocked. Not sure about movies but I doubt it's movies. I may drop down to the ad plan but I seriously, seriously HATE ads when watching a movie. For me, watching a movie is a theater-like experience so no ads is a desire.

Yes, we are paying for Netflix because the OG streaming service has been keeping us entertained. Plus, we have T-Mobile to offset the full cost of the top tier plan. We still would pay for Netflix regardless until about $35 to $40 a month before we start canceling and use as needed.

Sports on TV - If its such a big deal I wonder why media companies are dropping less-watched sports and just focusing on the biggies (football, basketball, baseball) and driving the price of those biggies even higher and higher. You'd think the lesser sport would be good to fill in empty time slots (or even a streaming channel) at a bargain price. Chris Brown suing WBD - Its not what you said (WBD defending itself), its Chris Brown will have to prove his accusations. Verizons 'Visible" phone plans and shopping for deals - Most of those discount plans have limitations with data or service areas, so look at those and choose what you need very carefully.

Dumped Netflix almost a decade ago when they signed an ex president 😳 and then proceeded to dump cable a couple of years later. Internet and Roku replaced everything for the most part. I miss a few things here and there but don’t really care anymore. It’s all ridiculous as it is. Don’t need 500 channels, never did, never will. Its probably because they went to YTTV, Direct TV and other streaming services with sports add ons. They didnt have any other reason to justify and raise up the cost again. Not fair to make people that don't even watch it have to pay for the stuff. This is why I got rid of my high priced hulu for a lower cost fee. @@josa720 Advertisers only know they ads played, but they have no idea if people actually pay attention to them. I assume that's what you're referring to. I don't really know anyone who regularly pays attention to most commercials, unless it's a movie ad they haven't seen, for example. You didn't really refute anything I said. I don't think ads on TV are anywhere near as effective as they were even 10-15 years ago. That's why Netflix is raising their price, because they can't charge enough for ads compared to the coast of carrying sports.
