I wonder how much she knows about racism in the church. Nowadays, many mormons are either ignorant or deny what church leaders used to say (not just privately, but officially, as a mouthpiece of God). They only now allow black men to be priesthood holders because there was just too much backlash. But for almost all of the churches history, black men were not allowed to hold the priesthood. And it was said that black people were punished with dark skin. Even though we should definitely not forget, how many other Christian groups are also extremely racist. There is a reason religious fundamentalist Christians and white supremacists overlap.

Honestly the condom thing with Ramses is such a red flag to me. There's too many guys who can talk the progressive talk, until it comes to women getting to make decisions about sex. Managing contraceptives is "women's work" that better not interfere with his ability to enjoy sex, never mind that hormonal contraceptives can have major health impacts and a condom doesn't impact his health in any way! The way he's just dictating to her in a situation where it should be a conversation... the way he doesn't seem to care about her well-being (he didn't care that she might get pregnant when he knew he was unwilling to have kids right now, he doesn't value her potential health concerns above his own preference to have condomless sex) is so just classically selfish. This is gonna be a bigger problem.
@miajacobs10372 ай бұрын
This!!! I lost my MIND when I watched that scene play out. Using the whole „sex is supposed to be mutually enjoyable though“ as a reason for why he’s going to pressure her into carrying 100% of the responsibility for contraception because he simply prefers rawdogging it? Faux-gressive to the core. Topped only by the „that IS a big issue, yeah“ after she asked him if he would be able to handle not sticking it in when she‘s postpartum. Like no dude, her having a gigantic open wound inside of her for weeks after pushing out his baby is a big deal, not going a few weeks without rawdogging it. What do you expect life with a woman to be?! The way he gets upset at her for not wanting sex while she‘s on her period says it all, it‘s like these men can only give af about consent when they assume it will always be awarded to them.
@TacseraEpSekahs2 ай бұрын
Being honest, it doesn't surprise me he holds this opinion. It does surprise me though how open he admits it. That means he dated women who were OKAY with it. It's appalling. If a guy says this, he either 1) is not educated at all about what hormonal contraceptives really do with all the side effects; 2) has no care about his partner, putting his superficial needs oven another person's health. Person who cares about you wouldn't do that. It's bad. If they don't care about you in this, they won't care about you when you're having a bad day, when you're is sick or when you have some kind of life trouble. They don't want a relationship, they want satisfy their wishes in expense of another person. They are selfish and nothing good will come from it. There are problems, and there are ways to go around them. But this ain't it.

This is what I'm aaaaaalways trying to communicate to people. "But he's so nice! She's so polite! They're such a lovely couple!" there is a difference between "nice" and "kind." All the most bigoted people know how to be "nice." Most of the time, bigots aren't gonna be the very stereotypical angry white trash whatever the hell people expect (which is a classist stereotype anyways, to be clear). The vast majority of bigots are the ones who were raised to value MANNERS. A lot of them also understand the system and will take advantage of their privilege more readily than anyone else. These people will be middle to upper class white folks who will be so sweet to your face. That's what it is to be "nice." Being actually KIND is something you show through your beliefs and actions, it's showing genuine respect and compassion for your fellow human being. Don't rush to trust people just because they were "nice" to you. Of course politeness is important and you should be nice back, but hold on to your actual trust until they show you their values and how they feel about people who aren't quite like them.

Tbh, it comes off like he already knows he isn't saying yes, so he just doesn't care to reach a resolution. Like he seemed to have pretty clearly 'gardened' before their wedding planning scene. Can't say that's the actions of someone who feels particularly engaged in the process. And Marissa didn't have words about it, which I think is one of her cues that she also doesn't think they're getting married. Also, I think Marissa was using the condom sex as a manipulation to make him have babies with her on the new timeline she was springing on him. Why does them having kids 4 years from now, right in their already agreed upon window, mean that she all of sudden needs a new type of birth control method? She was in the middle of pressuring him to have kids faster when she said it, and it felt like she was really just hoping he'd be a dude about it and prioritize the feel over the risk of pregnancy. I don't take BC bc of the mental health effects, I get it, I support her 100% in saying No to it. But the context of that conversation makes me feel like it was more about "If you don't agree to babies, it's raincoats for you". Why would she care if he doesn't practice safe sex? She clearly doesn't care about what pressuring a partner into kids too soon can do, she was already trying it, so why would she care if she accidentally gets pregnant? Regardless, I think both of their goals is to come off in such a way to be brought back for the other shows, not marry each other. At this point anyways

Right! They could have discussed IUDs, spermicide, implants, etc. However, he decided it was either I'm raw dogging or nothing. When she says that means she's going to get pregnant and he has to be okay with that, he acted all surprised. Ummmmmmm... what?

the thing about how Hannah talks with Nick, its not just like talking with an employee, its degrading. she talks down to him like he's an child of a distant relative that she hates. there's no empathy or gentle teaching, it's like when personal trainers belittle you so you do more reps as you cry on the floor.

Nick even said that she says things that cut deep, and he genuinely looked sad. I feel bad for him, because I do think he genuinely loves her and wants to make it work, and he's trying and he's pretty patient so far, but god. Hannah talks about having to grow up too fast because she's been working since she was 15 and was cut off from her parents at 18, and how she's more mature and emotionally intelligent than him, but that clearly isn't true. She had an issue with him the moment she saw him because of her insecurities about her own height, she felt embarrassed during the duck race incident (and then completely exaggerated about what was actually said when retelling it), and she's just been taking it out on Nick. She needs therapy.

I feel like as someone who’s father is suffering several health complications from having served for so long, I find it really difficult to have conversations about the nuances of how the military is bad for the people who are in it and the people in the countries we deploy to. People are very black and white about veterans. There’s way more gray involved in enlisting and I understand that due to current social climate (yes I’m pro Palestine), people don’t wanna talk about it. The military is predatory and brainwashes young people who don’t think war will happen in their lifetime. It chews them up, desensitizes them to violence and dumps them out on the streets once they’re done. Marissa should be glad she got out with little to no problems and never look back. I don’t think you have to actively express shame and regret over a brief stint in the Navy post war. I do think she’s a little bit naive about how we spend so much money on weapons of mass destruction, does she think we just don’t use those?? I don’t think Ramses was able to hold the space for Marissa to process that stuff. He seems very condescending and apathetic which I don’t think will help her to change her mind. She should probably get in contact with a professional to help her unpack all that. They’re a terrible match.

Her growing up Mormon does say a lot, and I get why she feels so confused about the church. For clarification, white ex Mormon, so not going to address the racial component. But the reason she probably feels so conflicted about the people within the church is because they are nice, at least to your face. It is rare that you will find a Mormon openly judging you, especially in a hostile manner. Instead it is quiet shunning wheh it comes to their disaproval, a refusal to talk outside of church functions. A certain passive agressive judgement that can be really difficult to pick up on in the moment. Honestly if you want to know how the church really feels about you, interact with the kids, who have yet to develop the finesse required to disguise their distaste. They'll (intentionally or otherwise) show exactly what they and their parents think of you. But yeah, cuz of the way they go about showing their distaste/disapproval it can be really hard to fully disentangle your views on the church and its members because they feel so nice on the surface, a lot nicer than most people are. But they are hostile to just the existence of certain people (racial minorites, LGBTQ folks, those with undiagnosed disabilities, the divorced a lot of the time) and until you can unpack the two-faced way the act, the reasonings behind it and your own feelings behind all of that, the church will forever remain a very complicated mess for you. Even if you have long stopped believing.
@advisorywarning2 ай бұрын
Totally agree. It’s not easy.. especially when your parents are still believing members you feel that they will always look down on you, even if they never say it. I just try to remind myself that it’s the system & institutions of the church and its leadership that I’m angry at and I will always appreciate the members that were kind (not just fake nice). It’s hard bc I am so hurt by all of the lies and the way I was raised as a bisexual girl in purity culture, but I have no one to yell or get mad at bc I know my mom was indoctrinated too. Hugs from another ex Mormon🫶🏼🫶🏼

Another ex Mormon here and this is beautifully said. There are nice people in the church.. sure. Very nice. I am going through a really rough time right now (I got "laid off" as retaliation right after I put in my medical leave for brain surgery) and even though I have ZERO INTEREST in watching this show, the entire playlist of these recaps has been the only thing that has distracted me enough during the last couple of weeks. So thank you for your service.

I could never be on love is blind for a multitude of reasons, I just can't pretend to do this song and dance when I find out we are fundamentally not compatible or genuinely dislike the person. A lot of them like legit hate their partners but for the sake of the show they are dragging it out, so it's painful to watch.

Watching Tyler knowing what we know is really tragic. I keep yelling "run" at the screen.

41:04 yeah man people who lie about a child’s existence is a HUGE ENORMOUS RED FLAG. Like you acted like your baby a whole human meant nothing to you enough to act and pretend like you didn’t have em. Crazy.

24:14 Just for those wondering, Kennie is correct. That's not a man thing, that's just him.

28:54 just confirmed with my dad who has had several sleep tests done for his sleep apnea, they tell you before the test not to drink or take any altering substances, they don’t breath check though. But like, this dude really thought he could say that to her but also dumb enough to say that on tv?🤣

I’m in the navy currently and I agree with Marissa I was 18 when I was approached by a recruiter. I was young and didn’t come from much so I joined. They go to high schools to prey on the young and to poor neighborhoods to prey on the less fortunate. Every time I ask someone why they joined the majority say “free college” or “travel” NONE of them say “to protect and serve” I think we have that “it’ll never happen to me” mentality I guess but we also do good things like humanitarian work after hurricanes my command helped with vaccines during covid with FEMA and that was very rewarding for me but I also agree with Ramses and this is where reality kind of sets in for a lot of us who are told to do some inhumane things or things we don’t necessarily agree with but have to because we are apart of something bigger than ourselves and that also affects a lot of innocent people for Marissa that moment came when she had to push the button

Ma’am. You did not talk long enough about the implications of that man (Stephen) mentioning a bowl of Mac and cheese as a sex object 😅 😂 That put me into a two hour nervous spiral after hearing it for the first time 😂😂

also the "now i don't wanna do it" thing might be Oppositional Defiance Disorder, it's a common thing in ND folx where being told what to do makes them really, REALLY not want to do that thing.

Personally I would never admit that the Barbie movie taught me the patriarchy was bad at 32 years of age, but that’s just me. I’m trying to give Marissa grace bc she was raised Mormon, but cmon😩

Girl you are light skinned. I don’t even think it’s much of a debate 😂 Reminds me of my light momma who refused to be called light skinned

I have a biracial nephew via my older brother, and he's very much light-skinned, so I took to calling him Litebrite, and now a bunch of people in the family (including my brother) call him Litebrite, so it's nice to hear I'm not the only one with that nickname at the ready.
