This show is exactly what I thought it would be: not as good as the cartoon but significantly better than the movie. Which are the highest and lowest bars imaginable, but that's Avatar for you.

Having watched (perhaps too many) reviews for both the Percy Jackson and Avatar live action remakes as an outsider, the take away I have is that the more someone grew up with the source material, the more fundamental it was to their childhood, the less someone can stand the remake. Meanwhile, casual fans and those newly exposed to the franchises seem to like the respective series.

Certainly. In my experience, I watched both the movie versions first. Well, I gave up on the Avatar one, and almost didn´t watch the original show because of it. But the Percy movie actually got me to buy the books. (And then I realized how "not-good" the movie was.)

I grew up with both series'. As an adult now, I enjoyed the new live action ATLA, aside from Koa (everything felt shallow, so it just seemed tedious rather than urgent), and the fact Aang didn't learn a lick of water bending. Any other nitpick I have can be excused, and I really liked it overall.

I'm watching the Avatar Cartoon now and I am rereading the Percy Jackson books (read them years ago). While I agree with some of the critisism that MG has, I really enjoyed the Percy Jackson show, liked the characters/feeling of camp etc. The Avatar Show looks like it really doesn't know if it wants to be a kids show or a GOT-like-show, I didn't care about Katara/Sukko. I thing Aang really has potential (similar feelings to Percy Jackson where sometimes the actors off-screen feel more like the characters) and I LOVED Zuko. But that's the problem with Avatar: Zukos character would be the only one I would watch season 2 for ... While I think PC was a little to childish/overexplained/too much show don't tell, I think most of the problems could be fixed by: longer/more episodes, more tension/action, writing for an audience that isn't 6 years old etc.

Lu ten's funeral scene that one was interesting, they made it more tied to the story rather than a separate moment that develops Iroh's character I liked that Lu ten as a character strengthens the relationship between Zuko and Iroh, he's important to Iroh yes but Zuko too, and it further pushes their adoptive father son relationship. Also I'm happy they didn't recreate the original scene with Iroh singing, i think it was perfect as is but it felt like a genuine homage to the original with the music playing in the background. It genuinely made me cry too. The original scene always hit me hard.

I personally was a bit disappointed by the show. I think one of the main reasons is that in the og series, it was a lot about the journey, with many different places, while the live action series has basically 3 different places, the southern water tribe, omashu, the northern water tribe. Because of that, and a lot of cut content, the live action series felt a lot more rushed than the og series

I have a lot of issues with characters and some of the storyline, but probably my biggest concern going forward is that the villains aren't nearly as menacing as they were in the original. In this show they kill people on scene, but how they interact lacks that same fire. Ozai ruled and manipulated through fear and power. He had no love for his children or even his wife. This ozai is basically an abusive dad trying his best to do what he thinks will make them better. He manipulates azula by comparing her accomplishments to zuko, and praising zukos work, which is completely different to the original. In the original it was perfection, or you aren't worth the air you breath. This new ozai doesn't strike me as someone who would scar their kid to prove a point to that child and everyone in attendance. This ozai is an abusive dad who seems to think he's doing what he should to make both of his kids stronger, while the original ozai was a monster parading around in human skin. All this to say the villains don't have the bite they need to push the story along, especially if they wanted to make a darker story out of this.

not to mention zhou goes from intimidiating villain fueled by unending ambition who is constantly ahead of the game and nearly destroys the fucking moon and cripples the power of waterbending as a crescendo to that blind ambition to... a weasel who doesn't do anything on their own, piggybacking entirely off of zuko and being azula's minion who eventually kills the moon spirit mostly because he seemed to have been told to by some others

Also I agree with you about the 41st division. What a touching scene. I love the compassion and caring they give to Zuko’s character, and I love the respect the crew gives to him after realizing he saved their lives. It almost reinforces that don’t judge a book by its cover message.

Personally I think Ozai should first get introduced when Zuko's backstory is explained, cause you immediately understand his character if the first thing you know about him is that he burned half his sons face. Him burning like 5 people alive does give a similar effect.

Going to the shrine to talk to Roku wasn't a change. That really happened in the show itself and how Aang learned of Sozin's Comet. In the first season and such, Aang's ability to connect with his past lives was so weak that he needed special means to try and communicate with them. But as the series progressed, his connection had grown stronger, until the final season, when he could connect with them at will.

The show is alright, but it has no soul, some critics say even though all actors/actresses casted embody their respective characters but they didn't have a chance to be their characters in the adaptation, also removing character flaws (sexism, humility , femininity, humor, wisdom) from literally everyone was so disappointing. We need to learn to see that when original creators leave the live action project, that probably means that the people working there will not do the original show justice P.s. I am glad you admitted your bias and probable praise for this show coming from disappointment you experienced from Percy Jackson adaptation

I loved Zuko (though I have not watched the cartoon). He is the exact type of whiny that a teenager his age would be. He is traumatized and it shows when he is childish because then he acts like a 13-yo (the age when he was scarred and banished) and then he turns around and acts his age or at least tries to act older. It was funny and it also made me feel so sorry for him, it made me root for him. LiveActionZuko showed how messed up it was that he was dragged into the war and given a big impossible task. I do wonder if we will get a more mature-ish Zuko later though when things really kick off.

I feel Antoine Bandele has the best review analogy: It's like a heated burito. Ep1-2 are like the delicious bite at the beginning. It's good, builds well on itself and goes actually kinda hard! But then, since it's a mircowave heated Burito, the third and forth bite are more lukewarm rather than 'deliciously perfect warm', not a real problem but also not...as amazing as eps 1 and 2. Five is the 'still frozen part'. Ep 6 (for a few minor errors) is the best episode. Especially when they link Zuko's crew to his 'banishment' punishment is beautiful! And with the added avatar information is also amazing. Kyoshi, Kuruk, some good delicious lore bits! Ep 7 and 8 are fine, but I dislike the ending of what happened to Zhao. And Iroh's nerfed badass moment. But the Zuko Iroh moments were my favorite. Paul Sun-Hyung Lee does an incredible Iroh. All in all, a passable addaptation imo. Is it the same as the cartoon? Hell no, nothing will ever come close to that. But it's like poeple being mad at Korra for 'not being the same as tloA'. It's a different show/setting. When adapting you can't go entirely 1 to 1, or we'll have a show as long as House MD (not that I'd mind that) but you just can't do live action what we can do in animation. So it's passable. Thank god it's more of a... One Piece adaptation and not a ... anything else netflix has bastardised

11:28 I think ozai is where the live action series actually made an improvement, he was a more forceful presence in the story, it managed to create more of a main villain feel than the original. This review is actually very good at explaining how I feel about it. I wondered why this was being made because the cartoon was already good. Why not just make more of the series, but since that is happening and how this turned out, I get it. This was actually a pretty great adaption that was faithful enough to the source material to feel like the show, but changed enough to create a fresh experience. I'm glad it got renewed for a season 2 and 3, I look forward to how they adapt those books.

The first 3 episodes were fine, but it got boring because it began suffering from the 8-episode problem. After the omashu part, they just started telling us what they did offscreen, and the frown on my face never went away after that. The show became so boring to me because everything that happened was either a questionable change or a worse version of what happened in the cartoon. Also, they spent too much time showing what Azula is up to. Because of that, they didn’t have enough time to make Aang or Katarra likable. (I think they successfully made Sokka likable.) Also, I agree with everything you said about the spirit world episodes. I was so disappointed when they changed Aang’s kaiju form to be a complete possession of the ocean spirit. It ruins Aang’s fear factor and he doesn’t even kill Zhao in this! Also, why doesn’t Aang learn any waterbending at all? Why was his airbending enough to do the job against all other bending this whole time? I saw him blasting apart Bumi’s rocks and that pissed me off. On a more positive note, I also think the 41st division change was an amazing addition.

I will say i think I'm in the minority when i say i was very underwhelmed about the opening scene at the southern air temple; sozins comet is supposed to grant fire benders the power of a hundred suns and not only does their bending not look any different but they come up with this convoluted idea of everyone from the other temples gathered in one place and made them an easier target. Looks like they nerfed the comet and does not make me optimistic for the finale but im still keeping an mind going forward.

Zuko may come off as more whiny but whilst the cartoon explores his anger and forcefulness...this show is taking him on a new path exploring his compassion and how that conflicts with his firenation beliefs. The 41st division, the funeral scene, when he decides to rescue iroh insteaf of aang from the earth prison, and nail on the head wise, they kinda blatently discuss it with the longer talk after the blue spirit breakout. Its kind of how instead of sokka needing to be less egotistical and grow into an actual warrior, is replaced with sokkas new path of being less xenophobic, and not allowing others to decide your path for you. Which is a lesson that is good for the new generation this was made for. As such i think this new show is setting up zuko and sokka as paralelles insteaf of zukoband aang in the cartoon, which kicks off when sokka faces zuko alone at the watertribe gate instead of handing aang over like both wanted. Good golly i love that scene so much character development on display...🤩 sorry this became a book, i had more thoughts than i thought...lol.

the thing with Aang needing to travel to temples or high spiritual space to meet avatars is actually in the show it’s just they didn’t dwell on it as much as the live action did. I think it’s more of a problem with script explaining it because in the show Aang needed to travel to places to speak to Roku and in Korra’s show they talk about places having high levels of spiritual energy. So that’s in the animated show it’s just the animated dropped it very quickly and the live action chose to talk about. It wasn’t until season 3 (which is weird because Aang says multiple times he can’t connect to the avatar state which previous episodes hint is the part that allows him to speak to his previous lives). But it wasn’t until then that he was able to speak with them on command.

Honestly watching this showed my just how much Percy Jackson messed up. I liked the Percy Jackson show but now it honestly just doesn't hold up as well anymore. My thoughts on it: Lookwise it was amazing, like the action and bending. I think Katara actress was the weakest, don't blame the actoress of course, just felt like missing the passion and showing more of her flaws. With Aang they over did it by keeping on repeating he is just a child which got a bit old. Uncle Iroh, Zuko and half of Sokka were good. The combining of Jet and Mechanist was a fine change. I did enjoy Sokka and Suki, and then Yui relationship. Going to specific temples to speak to the previous Avatars I thought was interesting but hope this isn't a thing now and just needed it to unlock that part of himself. Parts of the finally was done fine. What didn't work for me was combining Koh, Hei Bai and Wan Shi Tong, 3 different spirits that represents different parts of the spirit world, they don't need a connection. Azula hard miss as ell. Azula was always strong and had to wait to see her weakness while Zuko you could always tell his weakness and him overcoming it became truly strong. They were opposites, Azula didn't need to cry for attention she got it. I have my gripes with what they did with Bumi, but I think they wanted to show without Avatar no hope, just think could have executed it better. Mainly since Bumi just saw his friend after so long and doesn't try to hear him out, all the airbenders died but just jumps to thinking Aang ran away and just doesn't hold back in the fight. I don't think its terrible but a lot of room for improvement. I felt like this suffered from the same thing as One PIece live action where they wanted every episode to have an a and b story. Could have saved somethings for later seasons so can get more comradery with main cast. I didn't like not doing anything with Katara necklace. The necklace did help Team Avatar being tracked, as well as changed Paku ways by reminding him what he lost (Katara grandmother). Division 41 change was nice. But I hope in later seasons not afraid to show how brutal Zuko can be before his redemption. Overall a solid 6/10.

I think we can all agree this show was way above the movie, which doesn't exist. And I do like the added scenes, like seeing the Air Nomads before the genocide, the scene in the Fire Nation prior to the war, and all that. I actually liked that it was a bit more dark, and not afraid to just straight up murder people. I even liked getting to spend more time with the other Avatars besides Roku, although I don't like that his role was downgraded. There are also a few other details I'm not too happy about, but some of them didn't bother me too much. One major reason I like this more then the Percy Jackson show, is that this show at least tried to have actors that look accurate to the original show, as much as they could. Whereas the Percy Jackson show didn't even try. They just picked random actors that didn't even look like their book counterparts and put them in the show. They didn't even bother to at least try and make them look as close as they could. If you go in not already knowing who these actors are playing, you'd have no idea which character was on the screen until you were told their names, whereas the Avatar actors at least resembled who they portrayed. I could tell who everyone were before their names were revealed. All-in-all, the show was good, but nowhere near as great as the original show.

I hope you’ll watch every episode you haven’t watched yet of the Avatar world, the original Avatar and its sequel are great. 24:10 the only changes I hate are when Wan Zhi Tong shows up, and the portrayal of Roku and Bumi, especially the portrayal of these two, Wan Zhi Tong, Jet and the mechanist are boring. 27:50 Kuruk. 32:15 finally you’re talking about it, this is my favorite part of the show, I wish I could love the show as much as this scene.

Genuinely the Hei Bai and Koh could have a way more connected story, the Hei Bai was in despair because it's home was taken away, they could have made it Koh used that as a leash to manipulate the Hei Bai to get humans for him. I dont think Gyatso was ever necessary to appear honestly, Roku could've whispered Aang to seek him more in glimpses leading him to his shrine in the fire nation. I think Koh needing food was dumb, I think it was way more interesting if he just wanted humans like prizes and maybe it alludes to him and his mother. And Koh given back his prized possession no longer wishes to keep humans anymore, that resolves Koh's story, Hei Bai's story cause it's freed from reliving its despair and the ppl gets freed yay.

after watching Netflix Avatar and M.Night's Avatar i can say the 2010 movie did something better than Netflix 1. aang's air bending looks better 2. aang's scene in the southern air temple is better. 3. bending has casting time, like they have to do certain movement to cast a bending just like the cartoons. 4. aang is bending water. 5. you can see their breath when they're in a cold environment 6. i like the idea of bending fire only with a fire source and amplifying it like pyro and only masters can firebend without any source. 7. Katara is not a master runtime wise the Netflix show is the same as the cartoons if you remove the repetitive intro and recap in the cartoon.

I've always looked at adaptations as their own separate thing. More often than not I'll like adaptations as long as they follow the over arching story. I don't really care about it being a one to one remake because yeah why even remake it? If I can watch a remake and I can recognize it as having the spirit then I'm fine and can enjoy it as it's own story (not you Ella's Enchanted, you can go suck eggs). So I'm glad to hear u liked it because I did too.............. I also enjoyed the movie 😂 I'm not a movie critic imma like what I like!

As a fervent rewatcher of the original show I liked some bits of the reimagining. 1. Earth kingdom soldier vs Iroh talk, great world building. 2. Zuko and Iroh at Lu Ten's funeral. 3. Zuko joke when he doesnt have the plan (seriously show was trying its best not to have jokes i swear). 4. Music and visuals are amazing, the clothes could use some work cause they looked too clean and like they have never been worn. 5. My CABAGEEEEEES. What I dont like, uhh boy. 5. revealing that the army that was supposed to be sacrificed was the platoon Zuko got, which makes no sense as that was 3 years before and the plan didnt change and Zuko got banished, so what they went and used a different plan instead? So Zuko was right? Cool scene tho. THE BADS: 1 second into the show, Aang is flying, we know from the original show the at that point in time only a single man in history achieved that, guru lakhima, and then Zahir in Korra was the 2nd. Showing the airbender massacre is bad because it means Aangs realization of it loses all the impact, and in show the monk Giyatso was on a pile of corpses, he obliterated the fire nation army before passing, in series he got rekt because they changed the lore on the sozin comet to fit with the fact irl people get older and they dont want time limit restricting making of it. No avatar Roku???? EXCAUSE ME, the most important avatar to Aang, literal best friend of Sozin and the person who failed to save the world to save his best friend, who teaches Aang the most important lessons, was pushed onto Kiyoshi, but they skipped on her legend. I liked they added more about other avatars, cause the lore is so good around them, but it has to make sense who and when to use them. Iroh never showing WHY he is called DRAGON of the west, but the actor did and amazing job regardless. Why does Aang have glider if he can fly. Why did they fuse 5 episodes in one when showing tale of lovers, jet, norther air temple, etc. Why can Aang tell Bumi is Bumi when he knows its been 100 years, it killed the point of challenges. Zuko never once says honor in any capacity. Almost every single thing shown or explained was 100% opposite of what it was in the original show as if on purpose to catch people of guard, they succeeded, show sucks, cant wait to shit on the next season.

So I have a video idea I would love for you to do what if the Mortals that were named in Percy Jackson what demigods who would the Divine parent be. And to make it more interesting you can have them be the grandchildren of two gods and goddesses and them still being demigods. This is basically how I allow still be demigods. What happens if two demi-gods have a child together? If we go with demi-gods having half- divine and half-mortal genes, then there's a fifty percent chance their kid would be a demi-god half-breed, with a quarter of one god's blood and a quarter of the other god's. There's a twenty-five percent chance they'd be full godly, and twenty-five that they'd be just plain human. I really hope you like this idea and hopefully you use it one of your videos. I'm definitely curious about Sally Jackson and Gabe Ugliano and Nancy Bobofit. And if they would be the children of two demigods or a mortal and Divine parent.

I agree with you on every level. But the 41st division was just awesome. But i have the inner feelinv they all might be dead because of the attack on Northen water tribe. Many, many ships were destroyed and 41st division might be among them. And for the sake of my sanity i hope, I HOPE that the main reason why they not showing the relatuonship development and chemistry between Aang and Katara is because they planning to make Zutara ship as it was planned even in the original. But they had to change it. So i hope for Kaatara and Zuko. They are exact opposites in og, they have potential in live action. Be like Katara. Be bender of hope😂😂😂😂.

I'm actually quite satisfied with Zuko's actor as I do get that angsty frustration from the lines he delivers. Could there be more to work with his character? Yes absolutely! I hope that season 2 will bring out his character more fleshed out. The problem I have with the show is mostly Iroh's actor. I'm sure he's a decent actor. But he doesn't give me enough of his iconic demeanor and care free non chalant attitude with a touch of that silly uncle trolling which is integral to how he expresses his profound wisdom. Live action Iroh is just taking things too seriously which is exactly the opposite of the point of being Iroh in the first place. In fact, I think a lot of characters in this show are being directed too seriously at this point. If Netflix are really trying to display realism here, they should be having every teen character express their acting in a way that they've never experienced before. Its a coming of age story, so a little hint of fear would give us the realism we're all striving for. Don't just resort to "Oh, we're trying to be more like GOT". STOP it! Get some help! Seriously.. We all know GOT ultimately sucked ASS in the end. We shouldn't be giving ourselves excuses to being another show. Take influences yes but stop trying to be something your not is all I have a gripe with this show.

Loved the show but sad they added the hippies and jet for a half second but not the first fire bender teacher he had. Makes me worried they won't have the white lottas in later season. But yeah let's keep secret tunnel and not an important lesson the avatar learned. But other than that the show was good.

Personally I think the show is worth watching. It's not as good as the animated series, but they did capture the essence of the characters (except Katara, I think they did her so dirty) and the new elements introduced were really cool imo My problems are with what they kept. I think they really wanted new elements to be in the story (the air temple battle, Kyoshi taking over, water avatar, Zhao's basically a different character, Ozai and Azulla etc.) and did a fenomenal job with them, but tried making space in the story for them on the detriment of the actual story. I don't like what they did with Boomy tbh and I'm pretty sure it will come bite them in the next season and I personally liked the spirit world part. Aang actually did the acorn sphile to appease the panda spirit, though it was a blink and you miss it moment and it went by so fast because we needed to deal with Koh. And that's what I mean by they focused on new elements rather then the plot points they wanted to check. They wanted to flush out Koh (or this version of Koh) and in doing so, they forgot about panda However 1 narative decision that I found absolutely stupid and even if I liked the show I still can't understand why they madr it, is the reason Aang goes to the water tribe, which is to save it from the vision Kyoshi gave him. He never goes to the water tribe to learn water bending! That's why Katara went there, not Aang. Which is dumb af and I have no idea why they did this, when that's plot of Avatar for 2. 5 seasons. To find masteres to learn the elements and he never asks to be teached But overall it's not a bad show. If a little more effort was put in the story, I think it could have been great, but the writers settled for "that works" and that's unfortunately where the show is for me PS, everyone loves the reveal of Zuko's crew. I refuse to believe anyone could say otherwise

I didn't think Ozai could be made more of an absolute piece of sh*t, but I was surprised. I remember there being one specific shot in the scene Ozai banishes him, where zuko starts to cry under his bandages, and I swear, that's exactly how I'd cry in bed when my dad rants at me about every single flaw or mistake I make (he's a good dad in most respects, but i just don't like him). It's just the immeasurable pain of "I'm a failure to everyone I know" that he (and I) feels, as if he's still trying to say sorry in the only way his body will allow. That's honestly my favorite bit in the ENTIRE show. I love the original and Zuko was always going to be amazing, but this one shot beats other scene in the show by a country MILE, and honestly, I have never felt an emotional connection to 1 shot in any movie or show until now (only small animatics have had that power).

The biggest question I have is "why does this show exist?" If there was never any hope for this show to be as good as the animated show, why even bother making it? There'a nothing inherently better about a live action show, in fact I think a concept like this works better in animation. What does this show actually achieve that the animated show didn't? Why did it need to exist?
@Sleeper800

The short answer: Money I haven't checked this show out, but I 100% agree with you. I find the constant need to remake well received animated properties really insulting to the medium of animation. Why would I spend my time watching this even if it's fine when I could watch the original which is genuinely exceptional?

All of it is obviously for money reasons. As for my taste in Love Action, I will _always_ prefer animation, but it's always fascinating to see how something like AtLA would be adapted. Live Action adaptation _can_ work, but it would have to be extremely stylized to match the dorecting and energy of an animation. Disney regularly fails this. I feel like Netflix Avatar gets it right aesthetically, but the biggest problems clearly lie in the restraints the time and show length shove down the creators' throats.
