i think the biggest problem is the movie itself. Anime series aren't made to be adapted into movies. Especially such a long series. Its not possible to fit these events into a 2hr movie. If they created a movie that maybe wasn't canon to the story, or maybe was a spin off version, it would be new and would give the writers ability to create a in depth story that is made for a movie

@liamwarren30865 жыл бұрын
They did the same thing with the German and Turkish characters in Attack on Titan. Part of Mikasa’s intrigue is the fact that she’s half Asian and it’s REALLY rare, but not in the live action, where they’re all Japanese.
@Catamount14125 жыл бұрын
Like with AoT, this is especially indefensible precisely because these people are very strongly implied to be not-Asian. In FMA it's never explicitly stated where they are in comparison to the "real world"; it's just stated that the two worlds are the same place historically diverged at the point when Alchemy became a dominant force in one of them, but given that both Ed and Al live in Europe when Ed goes through the portal, it's reasonably to assume that that's also where they reside, give or take, in their own world. In FMAB, it's made very clear that they're not Asian because they're an Asian country involved and that's a major plotpoint. In fact the differences in people and culture get highlighted when Ling literally puts on a stereotypical Asian routine at one point to get out of getting in trouble.

Scar should be from a middle-eastern background, and those from Shing should be Asian. If we call out eastern movies for white-washing roles, then we should probably do so for filling every role with Asian people in anime films.

I'll be honest, FMA was so perfectly designed as a long running series that I don't know if it is even possible to properly adapt it without either massively changing the plot itself or making a ludicrous amount of films. A TV miniseries with a run time similar to BBC's Sherlock? Sure. A movie/movies? I really doubt it.

A movie by itself wouldn't be able to fit much of a series of episodes, let alone on arc so there'd have to be parts to them. Then again, hollywood's already botched plenty of adaptations so I doubt it'd work out regardless.

Its too big and deep of a story to summarize in a quick 2 hour movie. It was made as an anime for a reason. It had the length that it did for a reason. Plus I'm sure budget prevented them from doing such things as Envy's true form and things like that. How I would have done the movie: -Start with the Cornello Arc. -Continue with the Tucker Arc. -During the Tucker Arc, have Ed and Al tell the story about what happened to them to Nina as a flashback. -Throughout the movie, have Scar make appearances killing State Alchemists. -End it with the first battle with Scar.

I can understand Nina's story perhaps resulting in a flashback for Ed and Al, but I can't imagine Ed and Al telling a 4 year old their story of how they used the forbidden arts to try and ressurect their dead mother only to create an eldrich abomination that resulted in Ed losing his leg and sacrificing his arm by using the blood pouring out of the stump where his leg used to be to transfer his disintegrated little brother's soul into a suit of armour that can no longer feel anything.

So rather than fit iconic moments from an iconic series into a movie so fans could see those moments through a new medium and a wider audiance could get introduced to those moments and the series as a whole through that new medium, you'd rather try and fit in a movie that's devisive amongst even the fans of the original series and is quite possibly the thing that strayed the farthest from the author's work out of everything in the franchise? Seems legit.

Yeah but Brotherhood's Nina segment still made you feel even as short as it is. You get some good understanding of how much they care after one episode and that's why you care when she gets turned into a chimaera and then when she dies. This applies for everything in the show.That's why it matters. That's why you are so sad. That's why the show is so freaking good. Because you care.
@sarahtaylor42646 жыл бұрын
I watched FMA Brotherhood. Nina's death was borderline traumatic. I thought Nina was a lovable, but fairly standard, child character. The main emotional weight of the arc for me came from the terrible injustice done to someone so good and so innocent. She had a long life and a bright future ahead of her. Her father, the man who should have worked the hardest to protect her took everything, including her humanity, for the sake of his job. Then we find out he did this to his own wife some time earlier. How twisted can one person become? I wanted her to somehow come out of this situation okay. Like maybe the Elrich brothers would find her and undo the transformation. Then Scar found her, the man I thought would be the least moved at this point in the series. His reaction, so similar to mine, humanized him and made the injustice even more apparent. And then he killed her in a shockingly brutal way that left me angry, shocked and shaking afterwards. This scene had deep thematic implications for the series, Ed's character development and the complexity of alchemy as a force for both good and evil. Plus, Ed's reaction to the bloodspot and continuing struggle to cope with Nina's death made the whole thing even more even more tragic. For me the emotional pull for her death came more from its circumstances than from her actual character. The show didn't need more than one episode to pull this off. Establishing character was more important to Hues' death. He is an adult and we already knew he had done very ethically questionable things in the past. For his death to mean anything the audience had to be rooting for him because they genuinely cared for him as an individual. The series depicted this Hues as a young man who did what he thought he had to do as a soldier supporting his country, even if he found the war distasteful and his side's behavior wrong. He was a bit sympathetic to begin with. The series also made the current Hues a man who loves his family more than anything else. He could not fight back against Greed, knowing his true identity, because he could never hurt his wife, even an imitation of her, to save himself. He is also smart, funny, looks out for his friends and is willing to take risks to find the truth and do the right thing. This does not erase his past, but it makes him likable and shows us he is now a better man. His family and friends' suffering afterwards was also painful to watch. The sadness for me mainly came from how much I loved him as a character.
@fromhigherthings51686 жыл бұрын
@@sarahtaylor4264 exactly what I think! The whole point of that ark is to establish how thin the line is and yet I think it was less the event and more how Ed reacted to it. That's where all the pain is. Her death was unfair and just the clip where you see Ed's eyes widen when she says "Big brother Ed" is enough to show how much it hurts him. Not only that he and Al carry that pain and that pain is important to many other arks like the whole thing with Greed and his gang, and Al protecting Hawkeye. Her death makes them realize how weak they are which is a major part of the story. We don't need to feel everything that the characters feel because their reactions are what give each event meaning. It may not have needed more than one episode, but sometimes it only takes one episode to change everything. We know that because of Hughes, because of the Greed gang, and because of this. One episode is all it can take. Also saying it was Envy who killed Hughes. Not trying to be nitpicky here just trying to keep the facts straight.

@@fromhigherthings5168 You are right. I was thinking about Greed's death and got the names mixed up. I planned to write about it, but then decided Nina and Hughes were enough to make my point here. Anyway, it is nice to know the Big Brother Ed moment did not only scar me for life. Like the Elrichs, that was the gut-wrenching moment I realized what happened too. I like that they gave us subtle hints up to that moment and then in just three words revealed everything. They could have gone with an over-the-top/super dramatic reveal. However, I think the more understated approach was a great contrast to the horribleness of the situation and gave us enough time to fully process it without being distracted. They did not try to soften the blow beforehand or ease the pain afterward. Brilliant writing. Now I am curious to know what you think of Greed. How did you respond to his death?

My country traditionally subs everything except children's programs. I've always hated dubbed voices. Feels like you're getting a lower quality product than the original, even when the dub voices are decent. It's a shame about your parents disliking subtitled movies. That really cuts down on the variety of available media.

Can we talk about how all the wigs neither look like real world hair color, of which literally all the characters in FMA have naturally occurring colors, nor their appearance in the Manga/anime? Like they look like cheap Con wigs. There is no looseness or body. They look plastic. And the costumes don't look like real world interpretations nor ratio for ratio, color for color recreations. Everything just looks cheap and half assed.
@cracmar036 жыл бұрын
well ... is this time to mention that entire production had to run out of blonde wigs ? I mean Winry should be blonde ... and so should be Shou Tucker.

And made out of scraps. Because I can't figure out another reason why every costume piece had a distracting number of heavy seams in it. The military costumes looked a lot like what I see people who order from sketchy Chinese websites wearing at cons. The designs were off, the colors were off, even the fit was off, and it was all off in almost the exact same way that those cheap Chinese costumes are. Ed just looked like a leather fetishist. They even made a mess of "Winry's" costumes (that character wasn't Winry in anything but name), when they could have just bought something off the rack and called it good.

I think it's ironic that this is the adaptation they chose to go with an all Asian cast for, rather than Death Note. Death Note characters are supposed to be Japanese. FMA characters (except Xing) are literally supposed to be European. Sigh
@sinistrecigogne5 жыл бұрын
The difference is that Death Note characters do not NEED to be Asian for the plot to work. FMA characters do. It destroys an entire way of interpretating the story. And I'm fucking glad they didn't put Scar into the movie, it was already bad enough without adding brown face to it.

This movie suffers a lot of issues that a lot of live-action anime adaptions does. FMA is one of those series that it is possible to make at least a 3 film trilogy like they did with Rurouni Kenshin. They squished and rearranged too many plot points that it doesn't feel natural and even goes as far as to make Edward not even feel like Edward. Everything feels too clean and man-made and sterile for the story they're supposed to tell. It does hold a lot of similar issues to the Attack on Titan film as well. This is one property that would've benefited from a diversive cast. FMA takes place in a fictional alternate Germany-like country with other nations like alternate China, alternate Russia, Alternate Middle-East and so on. It's one of the rare diverse anime series that's important to it's many themes. Not including core-characters like Scar is a huge issue. FMA includes near racial genocide of a religious culture. Distrust against other nations and bids for power that may end up with the slaughtering of competing clans for the title of Emperor. Dealing with the guilt and PTSD a meaningless war that you know was wrong and ended with unnecessary slaughter. If revenge is truly right. Secret experimentation on solidiers and the corruption of power. These are stories and themes that Ed doesn't even directly deal with until later in the series. It's a shame this is another uninspired adaptation.

"Having Japanese studios try to make adaptations of Manga/Anime that are heavily inspired by western media/culture like FMA or Cowboy bebop results in the mess we see now." You're forgetting that these animes/mangas are produced by Japanese people and companies. There is no reason to assume that Western companies would do a better job.
@GodhandPhemto6 жыл бұрын
Glorious stop trying to be a little sjw and fucking think about it for a second. EVERYONE knows that anime is made in Japan by Japanese people, that DOESNT mean that EVERY story takes place in Japan with Japanese people. FMA takes place in a fictional Germanesque European country Amestris (their fucking King is called "Fuhrer" king bradley FFS!!!), thats why they are blonde and have the names they have, The country of Xing is supposed to represent the Chinese and Ishval is supposed to represent a northerm african/muslim type country. But thats besides the point. The point is people arent saying the west would do a better job than the Japanese just because they arent Japanese, they are saying that if you're going to cast people into a movie that takes place in a type of country at least try to cast the right race for it, How pissed would you be if they rereleased Roots with a bunch of Jewish people and Woody Allen as Kunta Kinte?! They whitewashed Deathnote a story that takes place in Japan with Japanese characters and Japanified FMA a story that takes place in a fictional Europe, thats the problem people have, dont know what the hell you're going on about, just doing what sjw's do I guess.

If marvel can make good movies about their comics, it should be possible to make good movies from japanese comics (manga for the nitpickers). The problem with movie-adaptations from anime is that they try to hard to stay faithfull to the sourcematerial. You can't cram 20 hours of sourcematerial into a 2 hour movie. Take the characters and make your own story based on the sourcematerial. In FMAB, there's a timegap of about half a year between Briggs and the Promised day. Make a movie about what happened then. Then you have the freedom to add pro- and antagonists, plotlines and setting not in the series. People watching the movie are probably there not for the story that is both written and animated, they are there for the characters, the world and the feeling of the original.

I think Al's visual design is completely emblematic of what you're saying here. He looks exactly like he does in the shows. He looks like a cartoon character. yay? He looks so out of place, like he literally just walked out of a television playing the FMA anime. This character should have been completely redesigned visually, to look like a real suit of armor you someone might actually put up as a medieval decoration because, well, that's what he is. However, since Al's appearance is so iconic, changing that was obviously out of the question on the marketing end - even though redesigning him in such a way to both look like a suit of armor in the real world while being reminiscent of his most defining features is something a skilled character designer would be very capable of.

Johnny The conqueror: to a degree I agree. Despite the wigs I was very very impressed with how close the actors looked to the source material. Dr Marco for instance was spot on, as was Hughs, Ross, and Hawkeye (although I’m kinda bummed they didn’t show more of how bad ass she can be), Ed was pretty decent in facial expressions and I really liked the actor that played Whinrey despite the lack of blonde hair. But the ishavans and the Armstrong’s? That would have been pushing it. They also did a good job with the priest... though if they really wanted to play it close to the source, his build should have been way wider. But that’s not picking at this point. I slightly curious if the studio even considered getting non Japanese actors for any roles (but not in a accusatory manner) but more so if there was even anyone else available to play the roles. One thing I would think would be interesting to see is if they did create a dubbed version of this is if they’d use the English voice actors for it. (Subbed vs dubbed arguments aside it would be a nice tie in) All that said, if an Western studio ever wants to try their hand at this, I think it would way better... wait... death note ... maybe not.
