It's like "female world is plagued by "not like other girls"...let's plague men's world with it too!". The gender switching is not progressive because it only switches the gender, not the narrative because some ppl don't recognize that different genders are differently positioned in society and have different issues, and history so having this She's All That makeover on a guy is not the same as doing it to a girl like in the original. Gender switching was progressive in like 2013. Let's leave it there.

My 90s kid perspective: She's All That isn't a great rom-com from the 90s. It's alright, the good thing about it is the cast. Freddie Prinze Jr. was a legit 90s cute boi and he had good chemistry with the girl. The makeover reveal is iconic and Sixpence None the Richer's "Kiss Me" is a certified 90s classic thanks to this movie. This remake... lacks the good cast and the chemistry, and the songs that it has were already featured in better products (Teeenage Dream in Glee, Kiss Me in the original). So they took an "OK" movie and made it a "nothing" movie.
@momo79893 жыл бұрын
I mean as a teen who saw it in theaters we all agree it wasn't the best teen film..but it was a who's who of prominent and up-and-coming young Stars. Exactly, I think most late 90's kids would also agree. Freddie still is fine as well tbh lol. But overall the movie was just meh.

In my opinion, the reason She's All That was picked was because it's remembered semi-fondly as in "that was a pretty decent movie, cute romance, attractive actors, whatever" but not as anything groundbreaking and was pretty much a vehicle for the actors. It doesn't have the iconic, untouchable status of Clueless, American Pie, or even Ten Things I Hate About You (which is probably untouchable soully because of Heath Ledger), so they knew no diehard 90s rom-com fans were going to get mad at them for remaking it. Like, I could only imagine the outcry if Addison Rae annouced she was playing Cher in a Clueless remake.

At one point during the prom royalty crownings the head teacher does an old man yells at cloud and tells them all to put down their phones and actually live the moment and there's like maybe three kids in the audience holding up phones to film it. Everyone else is just there... Which considering how many professional social media influencers there seem to be at that school makes it an even funnier thing for him to complain about Also a the beginning of the movie it shows Pagett using her sponsorship money from her vlog to pay household bills and stuff because she knows her mum is stressed about money and then later completely forgets about that and makes out she was only doing it for the clout and a college fund (which... isn't raising her own college fund a GOOD thing?? How does that make her job bad?)
@jimenatierna34083 жыл бұрын
Social media is extremely complex. There are toxic, unrealistic standards as there are genuine and touching aspects of it. Personally, when a teen movie reduces the nuances of social media to simply the bad stuff, it reeks of the writers not understanding how social media works, pandering, and laziness in their part. Teens will catch on to all of this and forget your message by the time the movie is over, no matter how good your message is. If you’re making a dumb movie (which He’s All That absolutely is), that is fine. If you’re making a movie specifically to try to touch teens on social media issues, you’ve failed as a movie.

@notthatnick55463 жыл бұрын
I grew up with "She's All That". I was 10 years old when it came out, which is also when I watched it for the first time. And I have probably seen it 7-8 times since. It's not like I'm a crazy fan of the original movie or anything, but there is without a doubt a nostalgia factor at play for me. It's really campy, but in a good way. So when "He's All That" came out, I, of course, watched it. As a 32-years-old guy, I had no idea who Addison Rae was. I knew Tanner Buchanan because of Cobra Kai, though. But I was fully aware that I am not the target audience of "He's All That". Nevertheless, the new movie is pretty bad, I'm not gonna lie. Tanner's acting was fine, Addison's was not. The laughing scene with the horse was incredibly cringy. It was like watching an alien trying to imitate a human female laughing. The actress who played the little sister, though, was really good, in my opinion. And she had the best lines of the movie. I laughed out loud when she said something along the lines of "He's my brother, but only by blood", which was a reference to "Not Another Teen Movie". What really bugs me with the new movie is the fact that the characters don't really evolve. They all basically stay the same throughout the entirety of the movie, even at the end. In the original movie, the main characters go through a transformative process, putting what they learned in practice to make their lives better or become better persons. Hell, even some secondary characters evolve. In "He's All That", the only "progress" we clearly see is that Addison's character decides to ghost her former sponsor and changes her online platform a bit. And Tanner's character pretty much stays the same. The end. I also really disliked the fact that Matthew Lillard and Rachael Leigh Cook don't reprise their roles. (Her character's name in the first movie is Laney Boggs, this time it is Anna Sawyer.) They were a breath of fresh air every time they were on screen and it would have been nice to give them more space and in a more meaningful way. So yeah, I would call this movie a failure. Even their "Kiss Me" version is lackluster. And the product placement was so aggressive that I felt disrespected as a viewer.

I think it's because, before the advent of social media celebrity, a LOT of these popular "influencers" would never have been hired by Hollywood, especially the ones that aren't "Hollywood pretty" like the Paul Brothers, Shane Dawson, Pewdiepie, Onision, Gabbie Hanna, Jeffrey Starr, etc. A LOT of these "influencers" are unattractive on the inside and outside, but people, especially kids, have become accustomed to flocking to such people who have minimal to no real talent at best (pranking is not a talent; recording yourself overracting is not a talent; etc.), causing Hollywood execs to respond to the numbers. I've never watched ANY of these people's videos yet I know who they are, and Hollywood/the music industry/brands respond to that.

@Rikrobat2 ай бұрын
Exactly. Its possible it was meant to tie into Paget’s speech about “I look like this but I also look like this” speech-but then have her express that she only wears a lot of glam because she’s certain no one will like her without it. Have moments where she confides that she doesn’t like wearing falsies or certain shades of lipstick, that she only does it to chase trends. Then it could be a moment of Cameron reminding her that he likes the real her, not the one wearing stuff she doesn’t enjoy. Without that context, it just perpetuates BS about women only wearing makeup to be dishonest or to attract men or whatever, and so she needs to “take it off to be real.”

If they didn't insist he was supposedly ugly, it would have been fine?? Like yeah some people are naturally good looking but dress in a very unflattering way which coupled with a bad hairstyle and maybe bad hiegene can make them look really bad. They (and medias using the "makeover" trope) should go that road with a "play/dress smart/in a flattering way and you'll look more attractive" instead of claiming that you can go from fugly to model. It's a better message and it's a lot more believable to watch. It's not like try to, or dare, make the hot actor look ugly so we will buy it. All this movie had to do was change some lines since they didn't want to make any effort except making 22 years old look 30!

We need to talk about how She's All That was also pretty mediocre. The reason why it's liked is because it was one of the first starts of the extremely popular trope of "she wears glasses but she's pretty when she takes them off and she's actually a really cool person and still looks good with glasses but I was just being a shallow asshole." Not only that but the cast of She's All That became pretty well known and were somewhat known when they filmed it. They had Freddie Prinze Jr, Rachael Leigh Cook, Paul Walker, Matthew Lillard, Usher, Lil Kim, Kieran Culkin, Gabrielle Union, Dule Hill. Even fricking Sarah Gellar makes an appearance during the lunchroom scene. Not only that but the nostalgia that many millennials had for the film.

I would actually love to see you do a reaction to the og she's all that..it has so many famous ppl and cameos in it. From Paul Walker, Anna Paquin and Gabrielle Union to Lil Kim, Buffy and Usher..I only realized the last time I watched that Dule from the show psyche was in it. Maybe because I was 14 or 15 and saw it in theaters that it's more nostalgic.. But I like seeing younger ppl watch older popular films to see modern takes.

“Krumping to Mozart” omg. Dead! 🤣💀 you are so articulate and comedic. I love your reviews!
