I'm also Bi and he's.... I'll admit he's not unattractive, but he seems really 'meh' to me; in these Romcom / Romance movies, the male leads all start to look the same, especially in the haircut department. It's weird when you see that the lead lady is gorgeous, and the movie tries to convince you that she is destined to be with generic main white man number 72. I'd argue that passionflix and pureflix are very hecking guilty in the "male leads all look the same" department.

I'm straight and Ben Affleck is about as attractive as a bowl of plain oatmeal. There's also just something about him (both in real life and in movies) that I can't pinpoint or describe, but he makes me feel like he's a douchebag idiot who pretends to be sensitive to try to get women. I won't watch anything that he's in because he gives me "ick" vibes.

As a lez, I despised the fact that this was the second film in which Ben Affleck "turned" a lesbian. Not to dismiss bisexuals but that wasn't even a key aspect in this or Chasing Amy. It was "oh, you like women? You just haven't found the right d!ck and Ben's is magically special". At least that's what I took away and it was always gross the way the films used lesbians to feed into the male fantasy.

Not Ben Affleck being a manic pixie dream for men. He's literally such a man's man for truly just being a fking idiot. Even his role in Goodwill Hunting feels like satire somehow. That's supposed to be a common thing, that people dating in real life have no on screen chemistry. Like they have no sexual tension, because they've relieved it. Romanticising something means idealising it. They no longer have an idealised view of each other, but a real one.

The ONLY thing I could think of is that through the warped view of the writer, a woman ex is 'quirky' and 'not a threat' but a man ex would have been a potential threat to the 'superiority' of Ben Affleck? You know what's (one of 100000 things) funny about The Room is: It cost 3 million dollars to make. That's one reason it's SO singular: it used big-budget cameras, had a real, professional film crew and real, professional actors getting paid, it's just that the script, directing, and lead were all completely botched...and all the same person.

If they wanted her to like men and women why did they not just make her bisexual? It would still have been absolutely appalling representation, but at least it wouldn't be completely and utterly lesbianphobic, fetishistic and disgusting. Holy shit. This one was rough as hell.
@jungtothehuimang
@jungtothehuimang 2 жыл бұрын
@Day They did not, she is only ever explained as a woman who likes women and who seems quite disgusted and put off by men, but who somehow ends up sleeping with Ben Affliction bc his peepee is just super special. There is even an entire monologue he has saying that she is "missing out" and she is "too hot and sexy" to only be with women because lesbians are lacking according to this film. She is not bisexual in this film. She is a lesbian that gets fixed by a man's penis. Which is just extremely offensive and nobody wants this.

Because then there wouldn’t be the “tension” of him pining for a woman who supposedly couldn’t want him, and then her finally sleeping with him wouldn’t be as big of an accomplishment. 🤢 Media in the early 2000’s was full of the “straight man thinks he can turn a lesbian” trope, and the word bisexual was never said.

And After this, both of them were not taken seriously as actors for a WHILE, and honestly, many believe the horrible reception of the movie was one of the reasons they had to break up. I just want everyone to know that someone was paid to write this. Paid a lot of money, given a lot of resources, to write a movie with Jennifer Lopez, and they wrote this. Sure, studio interference and all that, but is there even anything in here reminiscent of a once decent plot? As a writer seeing videos like this always make me feel good because it ju sets reassures me that no matter what I write, no matter how insecure you may feel about your prose, characters, or originality. You cannot fail. You have won just by trying. You could create the most debased, vulgar, bland, coma-inducing series of words put to paper, so revolting that the government is sent to your residence to steal all remnants of the work and burn it in front of you, only to then burn the ashes and hold your eyes over the smoke as a final punishment as you slowly douse the flame with your polluted tears, and that failure would still be greater and more successful than the entire existence of this movie. You cannot fail. If you can manage to sit down and write a work, no matter how long it takes, from start to finish, and do it (mostly) sober and with both hands, you will have put more effort than everyone who oversaw this monstrosity did and, no matter the outcome, will have succeeded. Go do it.

It makes me think that I'd better not write any monologues or soliloquys or Kenny is going to picture me sitting in a circle, stroking my ego. I meen what if a character gives an overly complicated answer to a question, does that count as a monologue? On second viewing, maybe monologues are O.K. if there are not too many of them.

This movie ONLY thought it was good due to the level of arrogance that Jlo was existing at back then. She took it very badly when people didn't like it, and she turned it into a huge drama about her relationship, which caused all kinds of issues for her and ben (mainly because he runs to a bottle at the first sign of adversity, expects the woman in his life to take full responsibility for his happiness, and tends to pout in self-pity whenever she's unhappy). This movie was 100% an ego project for jlo, and she was STUNNED when it didn't receive all of the accolades that she was expecting 😂

Dude, while I don’t deny that JLo was really pushing for this movie bacj in the day, your segment all about Ben Affleck made me very uncomfortable. While this can be hard to really comprenhend in this age of paparazzi and constant content, YOU DO NOT KNOW THESE PEOPLE, and acting as if you do (especially when trying to psychanalyse their relationships and apparent alcoholism) is incredibly disrespectful. I know you did not mean anything bad by it but I hope you reconsider your take.

I HATED growing up in the early 2000’s. Trying to explain to other 12yo’s calling everything gay is low key bigotry, and having them dunk on me for it. Having my black body type be the least desirable, having my black features constantly ridiculed or conformed to whiteness. Then 2010, and it’s like a magic wand of sanity! I’m not saying it didn’t have problems, but it was like everyone got on board with inclusion.

I do wish people would stop saying ''oh why not just make her bisexual?'' It would still be biphobic, you know that, right? Bi representation was and is already so bad (often we are hypersexualized and villainized, or completely erased and desexualized, and bi is always this 'dirty word' that's left unsaid), I know people saying stuff like that don't mean anything bad by it just... sigh. Honestly, bi authors/creators make the best bi characters overall, so let's just all agree that this movie should not have involved ANY lgbti+ characters whatsoever because they would always have done them dirty.

I resent that this movie is just a toxic waste dump for the writer's radioactive bad takes, because there's the skeleton of a passable rom com in the overall plot. Hear me out- Rival mobsters working for the same family are forced to work together on a kidnapping gig. The catch? Their mark is a kid, and they have to play a convincing "aunt and uncle" so the kid doesn't get wise to the plot and try to bolt. Shenanigans ensue. Also just drop the badly handled lesbian subplot altogether or just make her bisexual oh my god.
@AkiraTanaka11

No, don't make her bisexual. Because the main guy would still be a fetishizing creep about her being bisexual. Honestly, even if she was straight, he would do these misogynistic ramblings either way about her ''not wanting him'', so it's a lose-lose-lose situation.

As a lesbian I'm utterly disgusted. I didn't realize the full premise of this movie. Heard about this movie when it came out and wasn't keen on seeing it. I thought the gay aspect of it was that Ben's character thought Jen's was a lesbian. She's not and 'hilarity' ensues they fall in love. To know she was an actual lesbian... smh just upset my spirit. Ben and Jen just contributing to harmful stereotypes of lesbians, just wow They deserve each other.
