Nimona is Netflix's newest animated film and my gosh, what a ride. Full of bouts of dumb humor, fantastic animation, and a powerful story, Nimona should be at the top of your watch list. The movie shares some incredibly important themes in ways that are fitting for the audience while remaining lighthearted during the rest of the film and that is magnificent.
**Just a correction: In the video, I refer to Nimona as a "little girl" and I use she/her pronouns in reference to them, and while that could apply to one of the forms that Nimona takes shape in, Nimona is not a boy or a girl per se, but Nimona, and I think that is another beautiful detail in this film :)

that scene where Nimona is ready to let the sword pierce her heart, hurt me deeply. because I've been in such a painful situation too many times and seeing that scene brought me back to every time I came that close to quitting Life. in other words when I saw that scene, I really needed a hug to ease the pain in my heart.

Can I just say how much I like the symbolism portrayed by the knights causing more destruction than Nimona in her shadow dragon form. It’s a direct representation of how discrimination and hatred do more damage than the so-called “monsters.” Feeding into perpetual stereotypes and actively contributing to these negative beliefs only creates more problems, and doesn’t do any good no matter the angle you look at it. That scene is a prime example of this, and shows just how destructive these disgusting beliefs are.

The LGBT community represents such an objectively small percentage of the global population that it’s just factually incorrect that homophobia creates more harm than the LGBT movement. Rightful or not, that’s just numerically impossible. I would get it if the analogy was about racism, because then it would be a message to be considered, but with the gay folks? same here. im almost sixteen and since i was in middle school (around twelve) i’ve had horrible suicidal tendencies, and struggled to socially fit in with a lot of girls my age for a while. because of it i developed a tendency at a young age to “warp” my personality to suit whoever i’m around. ill learn what someone likes and how they act and ill automatically try to change myself personality-wise so i can seem somewhat likable. at the end of the day tho, its hard to tell who i *rlly* am because of how much i conform myself socially to other people. when i watched this movie with my older brother & cousins yesterday it hurt me at how closely i relate to Nimona’s situation - she basically shapeshifted herself into different animals/people in order to not feel like the odd one out. & it hurts that many people (especially younger kids) develop similar issues as well. fitting in is a universal issue that anyone can experience, and it can hurt growing up to think you won’t be able to fit in anywhere/with anyone. and Nimona presented this SO WELL. not only was this movie extremely deep, its literally so well-done (quality wise). even though disney basically scrapped the making of this a long time ago, im so glad Netflix brought it back to life bcs as someone suffering with similar problems to yours, its awesome to see that social issues like this r being addressed and recognized through films.

I interpret this scene as the director being willing to destroy the city to preserve the institution - after all, if Nimona lives and people see that she's not such a terrible monster, what purpose do the knights serve? This act was the result to a challenge being posed to her very raison d' tre by Nimona's continued existence.

I like how it’s not really told or shown how old Nimona is. We know she’s over 1000 years old if we assume the story of Gloreth and the flashback is at the same time. But we don’t know how much time Nimona spent before. We just know she was alone. Her human forms can be as much as the other form. They’re just something else to turn into when she feels like it.

I had a few theories about nimona 1:The evil lair is ballister's childhood home and that ballister is an oprhan. Which makes him becomming a knight all the more powerful. Not only is he a commoner but he is the lowest of the low, having to survive by eating scrap pizza from the trash. 2:The director is Gloreth herself, we never really learnt the name of the Director. Magic exists in the world so maybe gloreth found a way to extend her own life. I gathered this from her full on hatred of Nimona and her and gloreth having not only the same eye color but also the same light spot in their eyes. If you pay close attention the characters have light spots in their eyes all being different shapes. Gloreths and The director's eye shapes are diamonds 3:Nimona's monster form is her true form. The scroll from gloreth's time that shows nimona also shows a monster that looks exactly like nimona's monster form. So at some point nimona turned into that beast infront of gloreth

I loved this movie so much. Nimona was my favorite character in the movie and I want Justice for Nimona. Nimona deserved to be treated better then she was and I felt really bad for her especially when she wanted to kill herself. I also love her personality and her regular form is cool. Her little girl form looks beautiful but shows her weak and vulnerable side. I feel bad that Nimona went through so much and no one cared about how much pain she was in. But thankfully Ballister apologized for betraying her. I wonder if Nimona ever had parents. I am more curious about her backstory and how she was born. Nimona is a beautiful wonderful person she went through too much. If she ever were to come back, I hope everyone who called her a monster will apologize to her. Like Bal did in the end.

Thank god Disney didn't get their hand on this film. First of all, they would have gone all out in the wrong parts of the film and let the plot as secondary issue. The gay relationship in this film seems organic and not the two ways Disney does it, nonexistent or super exaggerated. This film is great and I am happy that Disney didn't got it because in the path that they have gone, they destroy everything. Extreme inclusive culture just for the sake of being inclusive and changing things just to not offend people. This movie doesn't give a shit about offending people and I like it. They made a clear-cut organic film that had inclusivity and didn't exaggerated it ("cough" Disney), the plot was made clear and wasn't a secondary task. Also, the movie I think it's for teen base audience but even younger people can see it, it doesn't push an image that's going to harm because they do it the right way, like you said age appropriate. Actually, Gloreth is more than just a kid who rejected her friend. She embraced this heroic identity people gave her, maybe because of guilt (she feels the village were destroyed by her fault), maybe because of pride (we see her play with her sword before the scene in the village, before she even met Nimona, she wanted to be a hero). She then proceeded to become a knight, took the leadership of the kingdom and founded the wall, the institute and the rules. That tale was repeated and transformed for her own glory. It's the true treason, the ongoing treason that Nimona saw for centuries.

I’d like to believe that Glorith didn’t point the sword at her friend because her parents changed her mind, she pointed her sword and built walls around her village after seeing the villagers light themselves on fire and almost kill her friend. She was protecting both of the worlds she loved but needs to say something harsh to Nimona to keep them away from the humans.

For me she did it weather because of guilt (she feels the village was destroyed by her fault), or because of pride (we see her play with her sword before the scene in the village, before she even met Nimona, she wanted to be a hero). It's interesting to think she maybe also shut her guilty conscience by persuading herself that it was also for Nimona's good. That what is different must be separated.

Transgender woman here. I've been going through a lot recently. I was hospitalized for a month and Dropped off at a homeless shelter called must ministries. they made me stay in the men's dorm and a few days ago I've become so sick and tired of justifying my exsistance and explaining myself I started loosing sleep. This movie made me cry, just like nimona I've struggled to justify living in a world where I feel so alone, and an environment where everyone hates me. I needed this movie...

Nimona was a good time but also some of the story beats reminded me of the Iron Giant (specifically the sacrifice). The LGBT thing however is rarely touched upon in children's films, and when it is it's not at the forefront or the main part of the story, but rather a cameo that can be cut out when it comes to international releases (Looking at you, MouseHouse)

The best movies have something for everyone. I could see a child enjoying it just for the goofy action & mayhem, but older audiences (teen and up, I'd guess) will almost definitely get more out of it.

@Chaos__incarnate 11 ай бұрын
I do see your confusion since really only older audiences will be able to see the comparisons and subtext. But the movie is meant for both audiences equally. Both old and young can learn from the story and even though kids can’t understand the subtext and comparisons they don’t have to. For example, to explain dysphoria, you could compare it to what Nimona said in the scene before they interrogated the squire. They still don’t know what dysphoria is but the story explains what it feels like to give them a good idea. Also to be fair to kids, a lot of them will be able to understand and apply the morals of the movie. They’re smarter than most people give them credit for.

As a reader of the comic who enjoyed it, I tried to watch the movie but was immediately turned off by how different it was and decided to come back to it later when I was more prepared for it. Watching your synopsis, it's clear they changed the plot, and changed the character's backstories even more, in order to compress the entire story into a single fast moving caper. And l can see how once they started cutting all the slow build up and characterization, that kind of corrupted the premise of the story. I'm especially frustrated by the attempt to whitewash the villain protagonists by removing their history of villainy, and especially removing Nimona's history of being abandoned and abused. Especially in Nimona's case, her issue with the kingdom in the movie comes across as being reduced to mere angst over social rejection, rather than the justified anger and hatred in the comic over years of imprisonment and physical torture in cruel science experiments as a child. As a whole, the new story sounds like it creates an unreasonable standard of perfect and selfless behavior that people fighting for their own justice and survival have to meet, instead of telling a story that accepts that people who are grossly wronged by society and forced into desperate positions are going to resort to desperate acts and that they have a right to do so.

I haven't seen the movie yet, but I read the comic and based on this video, the comic is a significantly different and much darker story, that takes place over a longer time period, and with the characters having much more developed backstories. There's less romance and more focus on the increasingly dysfunctional and desperate things people do over time when they're both stuck in a terrible position they can't get out of, and in denial about the truths they don't want to accept.

Not a bad analysis! I have a bit of feedback on your technical production: 1: Is a full story recap necessary? I would tie your analysis to specific plot moments as examples to reinforce your point. 2: Does your mic have a pop filter? It's quite important to get rid of the popping sounds when you're speaking. 3: Perhaps elaborate on a few points, like how the queer representation presents a trans allegory, specifically, and how none of us are immune from cultural bias. You touched on these points, but to sell the whole subtext I think you could dig deeper. Hope that helps!

Spoilers of some of you havent seen the movie yet. In the flashback we see how nimona and her friend used to play with eachother. And after that fucking bitch screamed at them bc she saw gloreth play with a bear. And gets even more upset after seeing nimona turn back into her girl form. Which is funny bc she didnt have a prob when she saw them play the FIRST TIME!! Anyway, so i doubt that glor believed her mom about nimona being a monster. If she did, she wouldn't have been with her anyway. I believe that she knew that things couldnt go back to normal. Especially after all hell broke lose. And i am pretty sure seeing her buddy getting pushed and stabbed all the time was not a very pleasant sight for her. So the only thing she could do was trying to get her friend out of the village by 'banishing' her when in reality she wanted her friend to be safe and the ppl not to be alarmed anymore. Maybe she tried to find her after that day or so but could not find her regarles. Which is to be expected, but eh. After some time glam tries to do her best to make the village a safer place but still hoping that she would find nimona to explain everything. but something or what ever happened and now we have a huge medieval/futuristic place that got the whole story mixed up and neither the ppl nor nimora knew about her actual intend of what she did and why I did not buy it one second that glore would just try to fight a girl-a girl she found scared and shy no less, and just forget all the things they had been through just bc the grown ups were being fucking butt holes

@@PrincessDreamie OTOH, the entire rest of Gloreth's career (as far as we're told) is all about buying into the hate. She grows up to become a monster-hunter and organizes an order of knights to hunt monsters. She gathers so much influence that their whole civilization gets built around her. That's not easy to do for a peasant girl, so she would have had to have a lot of passion and determination. So I watched this movie with my wife and she immediately called it that the director was the bad guy. I asked her how she knew and she listed that she seemed manipulative, while there were knights questioning why balistar did it or still showing signs of hurt from the betrayal, she immediately was like no he did it 100% he’s the bad guy. To catch when someone is trying to manipulate you try to see if the one thing they say immediately angers you and try to question it. If the comment is making you angry right away they might have another agenda in mind
