16:13 - Ha, we had coins so much older than just about a decade in circulation before switching to the euro. You would commonly receive coins older than yourself back then. Occasionally, you would even get a 50 Pfennig coin which predated the FRG and thus didn't say "Bundesrepublik Deutschland" (FRG) on it but instead "Bank deutscher Länder" (Bank of German states). Those were more than half a century old when we adopted the euro, and getting one of them happened about twice a year, at least to me. I remember working as a cashier right after high school for a couple of months - that must have been in '97 or so. One day, I received a very weird coin: the federal eagle on its back looked a bit odd. I couldn't exactly pinpoint was wrong with it but I knew it was different from our actual federal eagle. You know, kind of what I imagined a cheap counterfeit would look like. Only when I looked at the year it was minted - IIRC it was 1916 - it occurred to me: that was not a federal but an imperial eagle on the back of that coin! I replaced it with a then-current coin, taped the ancient one to a letter and mailed it to my former history teacher. A couple of months later she wrote me back telling me how she used it as an opener to one of her history classes. TL;DR: German Mark/Pfennig coins used to remain in circulation for _very_ long times. Oh, and just in case it didn't become clear: I live in Germany.
@DaXande1353 жыл бұрын
And it also is nothing special to get hands on older Cent coins - at least that's my experience... But since the Euro isn't that old in general, we still have to wait some years till we see if those coins will also remain as long as the old Mark/Pfennig... Achso, und Servus ;-)

What did Microsoft do to IBM
@JVHShack2 жыл бұрын
@@toopienator Microsoft worked with IBM to develop a command line OS. IBM eventually released PC-DOS. They were also codeveloping a GUI based operating system, but Microsoft backed out of their agreement to develop and release Windows 3.0. This left IBM hanging out to dry who in turn developed OS/2 and PC-DOS which both failed after a few years with Microsoft's success in marketing and the release of Windows 95. These events are what I believe made IBM leave the personal computer business altogether in the early 2000s and sell what remained to Korean based Lenovo. In a single word, "betrayal".

Ah yes, I remember the Netflix Wii disc. But man, seeing that envelope brings me back to the days when Netflix was just a DVD-by-mail company, and were _just_ starting to break into the video-on-demand market.

So weird seeing someone excited about owning some GBP coins. Those are an old variant by now - two generations old, if I remember correctly. We've had the coins that go together to form a shield, and now our current coins all have the "gold" as an outside ring with a silver inner pat. But regardless of that, these coins are still legal tender. The only things that aren't now are the paper notes, but you can exchange them for the new ones.
@PaulTheFox19883 жыл бұрын
Slight correction for those unaware, the pound coin denominations, e.g £1 and £2 coins have the golden ring, the sub pound coins are either silver coloured e.g. 50p, 20p, 10p and 5p coins. Or are a dirty bronze/pale copper colour e.g 1p and 2p coins The old £1 coins are no longer legal tender, but can be exchanged for new equivalents at a bank, at least for the time being. if a shop accepts them it's because they can get them exchanged, not because they're legal tender. If you are in the UK and happen to have a £50 note, make sure to ask the shop you're in if they accept them because many shops don't, same with Scottish notes when in England or Wales, many shops either don't recognise it and think it's fake, or know it's a Scottish note and reject it anyway. (Scots are generally happy to take either, but shop keepers in England and Wales can be very awkward about it)
@TDGalea3 жыл бұрын
@@PaulTheFox1988 Ah yeah, didn't mention the pence coins as they've really not changed too much. I honestly didn't realise the old pound coins were considered no longer legal tender though - exactly as you say, I've never had a problem using them so never gave it that thought.
