The speech was amazing. A king can have armies and ships but he has no control over the waves. Really deep.

Maybe you already know this, but the actual (historical) king Canute proved that he had no control over the waves to demonstrate that he had no divine power. There was Christian ideology in this action (differentiating kings and men from God), since he was a pious Christian, though (as far as I know) he respected and even loved norse tradition.

@@Hell_O7 Canute was a very important king who conquered the entire northern part of Europe. He was also very loved by the people. Both of these things earned him the nickname "The Great One." Epithet that he shares with figures at the level of Alexander the Great. One of the most famous legends about him is the speech in front of the tide. In which he ordered them to stop their waves. This is to demonstrate to his people that a king does not have divine power (something with which monarchies justified themselves to inherit power, to be elected). He then placed his crown on a crucifix and never put it on again.

His belief was that humans had lost the love of God by simply being human Therefore, if humans can't be with God, he'd create paradise on earth in spite of God's logic by claiming it "Love" in this case is not a person, it's the connection with the source of life. The spiritual connection with everything

For me the scene when Canute command the tides is just like Jesus stopping the storm, can you understand ? He trying to copying Jesus.
@scaravv1876Ай бұрын
I see what you’re getting at but I don’t think he’s trying to copy Jesus. He’s aware that he doesn’t have that same power that God does which is why he rebels against him instead. He doesn’t feel the need to be like Jesus but feels that he has to reject his “rules” in order to save those who he believed to be forsaken by God. His huge mistake was believing that a rebellion against God would work and it’s evident that it doesn’t work because it’s lead him down a path of despair and bloodshed where he feels convicted for his actions and is truly at war with himself. He failed to realize that God never abandoned him and that humans are ultimately responsible for the cruelty they bring into the world. He’s had a past of being betrayed and abandoned so when God didn’t fix everything or answer Canute, he felt even more betrayed at his perceived indifference of God and decided to take matters into his own hands out of pain and desperation for the peace he wants to restore in the cruel Viking world. This eventually leads to him making all these ruthless decisions because he feels that he must take action and responsibility as king to sacrifice his own morals to achieve peace for his people. It’s kind of like a Messiah complex but not necessarily because he wants to be Jesus or wants to imitate him.
@aurelian2668Ай бұрын
@@scaravv1876 No he knows God did not abandoned him but believed wrongly that God abandoned others. He still believes in God and trusts him but wrongfully feels sad that others wont be saved which isnt the case. He misinterpreted it basically, sad how a faithful man like Canute has been led wrongly in his strong belief of empathetic savior complex.😊
