I live in Youngstown OH and currently have heroin addict neighbors who have 4 kids. Its the saddest thing to watch. They were kind of normal when I moved in and now they are like living next door to white trash vampires who never come out in the daylight. It happened gradually and it was like slow motion over a period of about 2 years. Now they are at rock bottom. Its brutal to watch. I have called Children's Services, City Zoning, Animal Control... you name it. The zoning guy took out a file he had on them thick as a phone book. No one does shit. Nothing changes. The train wreck just keeps getting worse. Their home is being auctioned by the bank as I type this. That shit Dave said is real. Its harsh stuff.

These days, half of Dave Chappelle’s sets are just him talking to the audience and it’s just as engaging as his more straightforward comedy. One minute I’m laughing my ass off, and the next I’m hanging on every word as Dave just uironically spits hard wisdom. He’s not the first person to try expanding his show outside of just pure comedy, but he’s the first to really make it work. It’s actually incredible how advanced his material is, compared to most of his contemporaries.

At the very least, George Carlin and Richard Pryor before him. I think Trevor Noah succeeds with it as well though he comes at it more from the wisdom side and runs into funny.
@landonhagan450
@landonhagan450 4 жыл бұрын
Dan Zinder I’m actually unfamiliar with Richard Pryor, so I can’t speak to his comedy, but as far as George Carlin goes, I think I might not have gotten my point across properly. Hundreds of comics have integrated serious subject matter into their routines, but it’s always been about saying it in a funny way so as to subtly and comfortably guide the audience through a complicated topic. Carlin was very much the same as this and, while that certainly makes him part of the evolution of “serious comedy”, there is still a notable difference between that and what Dave is doing. Dave has long periods of explicitly serious and direct content. It’s more direct and conversational and using a totally different application of a comedian’s storytelling skills. He might punctuate a certain beat with a joke but by and large these segments have very little actual comedy in them. In doing this Dave is expanding his performance *_outside_* the realm of comedy almost into lecturing. That’s the difference, Carlin was comedy with a bit of wisdom, while Dave is pure wisdom and pure comedy both sharing equal emphasis. I used the word lecture very specifically, as well. The rise of TedTalks demonstrates a desire for a platform similar to stand-up, but dedicated specifically to educational lecturing as a form of entertainment. Thus the best TedTalks usually add a bit of comedy in with their education, effectively making them the opposite of Carlin. What Dave does feels like the natural equilibrium between these two methods.

@danzinder179 4 жыл бұрын
@@landonhagan450 Your clarification would probably distinguish him from Pryor then but I would argue that some of Carlin's latter bits (particularly the "Illusion of Choice" segment) fall squarely in that realm of comedic exposition style without jokes. I would agree that the segment DC did after George Floyd's death moved that genre further. I'm not quite sure I can quite articulate what he did in that segment but it did feel like a new sphere of performance. As I mentioned, I think Trevor Noah has moved into that realm. He's a terrific thinker as well.

WT Actual. . . Big Pharma is partially to blame. They fought all attempts at sensible regulation and encouraged doctors to slang their product. Dopeboys can wear lap coats too. They feigned ignorance when the doctors went down after being subsidized to do so. Big Pharma encouraged using opioids for ailments that before didn’t require it. They made ads that downplayed the addictive nature of it. If you want to see a fun short video on the crisis look up John Oliver and opioid crisis.
