Netherlands East Indies Color Part 1

Indonesia was once known as The Netherlands East Indies......this is part 1 of a rare 1938 color film showing a journey by Train and Ocean Liner from the Netherlands to Batavia which is now Jakarta. Quite an adventure back then. Of course the journey could be made by aeroplane but that took two to three days. Going by Rail and Ship was really an adventure.

I have other feelings when I see the film of the "goede" oude tijdl (Good old era), I am an Indonesian and born 1932, there fore my spontaneous reaction was :"Ach, daar heb je die oude kolonialisten weer......" and when I see a servant working diligently my reaction is : "Bangsaku rakyatku semuanya..."(part of our national anthem: meaning : "My nation, my people all of us...".) and a faintly pressing long forgotten feeling of being a second class person in a white society overcomes me ........

thanks so very much....for these special words.....one can see that the younger people, (kinderen0 were having a swell time on the ocean voyage......much of the N O I infrastruture remains to this day, roads and railways...and here in Bandung many of those magnificent art deco buildings remain

Sumatra and Java, I have hopes that at sometime in the future I will go and visit to see both the history and the modern growth there. Unfortunately it will be several years before the opportunity comes. In the meantime I hope to continue my research of both the "Michels" and "Prins" sides of my family who lived there prior to the Japanese invasion.

In this video, the Indonesian people only become a slave/jongos, no Indonesian people who became boss. Therefore, I understand why people of Indonesia want independence from Dutch.

Why did the Dutch become colonizers in Indonesia, when they first came to Indonesia to trade spices? whereas the Netherlands was more educated at that time compared to the backward Indonesian people

Oost Indie excursions, or regular trips, depend upon the view point. My parents, uncles, and aunts could have been the kids like these when they went aboard the ships in the 20's and 30's with their parents. Yet to the grandparents of mine they were trips to and from work. How did that change what they felt? My uncle, a ship's captain, how was it to him? Or was it chance to get your mind off the problems that they had to deal with. Don't you think it could be so?

In my opinion, as the Dayak Person, we never ever be slaves or jongos to the Dutch. My family was born in that era. Maybe slavery happens in Java and Sumatra bur, Borneo ? We never ever be jongos to the Dutch. One of my grandpa is Chinesse Hokkian man who married with my grandma a Dutch Lady. And my Grandpa from my dad is Dayak man who work to the Dutch and well educated person from the Dutch Education Background. He even get the schollarship from the Royal Dutch Family to get his degree in Den Haag. Lucky to my family then ... so sorry to hear Jongos from our Javanesse brother. Must be very bad opinion from you...

Not all that the dutch did in cololonial period was 100 % bad. They brought modern technology, hospitals and medicine as well.

All the good work in the infrastructure seems to be forgotten, mostly negative comments ! Remember that the most innocent people had to suffer under the Japanese occupation and had to leave the country later on, however they had no influence at all in politics !

Alhamdulillah no more Dutch.. We are an Independent country now.. Otherwise, me and my children will never can go to the college... Yes this video is a sweet memory but only for Dutch people and their collaborators...not for Indonesians... This is our country.. You Dutch!!!!have you own country... So go away!
