Dunkey went from funny prank calls and genuinely funny moments with some good dub over to enhance the humor to just ruining some games for quick cheap jokes. I stopped watching because he spoils and ruins games for me far too often.

This was a really interesting video Shaq. One of the reasons I'm a fan is that I feel I do or would draw my line in the same places that you do. Every time you do a sponsorship I'm like "...yeah that's a legit product for the people who want it, and it's being presented in an honest fashion." I'm very much of the "growth for the sake of growth is cancer" philosophy, but my mind had never gotten as far as questioning "are more views better" somehow. Really going to mull over you bringing that up here, I appreciate that idea. The topic of the asteroid video title was interesting. My first pass impression is, using that much fear to increase attention to a thing where it feels like what's in the "packaging" is legit content is a good thing, b/c it got a good result. But I've spent a lot of time feeling that the way we're constantly bombarded by messages of anxiety in advertisement leads to a lot of our mental and spiritual illnesses. Maybe even such a small trade isn't worth it. I think if I were to produce content like this, I'd aim to avoid that kind of thing wherever possible. I appreciate that you've done that Shaq. Your only fear vid I remember was about the fire extinguisher, and you know, fear does have a place and purpose, and some worry there to get that outcome is likely functional fear. I'm looking across at my little 1L extinguisher mounted on the wall that I bought after your vid, right now as I type this.

It would be interesting to see your take on this in five years after your own channel grows to see if any of your opinions remain the same or have changed. I feel like a big contributing factor to a financial focus for a lot of KZbinrs is if they have more than five or 10 employees. This reaction is very scholarly feeling. I am always massively impressed. By the way you communicate.

This guy has already been doing this for 6 years and is one of the more popular people in his niche. I mean j kenji lopez alt only has 1.3 million subs. Babish is the only person really crushing him with 9 mil subs. So I think he's plenty experienced to be taking this perspective. But your point about having employees is interesting. I'd say that falls under his principle of "knowing what you want to do". On one side he doesn't want to pump out highly produced videos every week, so he doesn't need to employ people. On the other side it seems like he'd never want to be in a position where he NEEDS to extract money from his videos and so it's unlikely he'd ever hire people. These people don't just find themselves with 4 people working under them. they almost certainly just wanted to be making as much money as possible in the first place. or at least starting from when they realized they could make a bunch of money

Im here for any dunkey praise of course but i also think you bring videos i see into a more sarcastic or speculative light. I like veritasium but some of the best content i see on this platform is critique of what his videos even if the scientific content he produces is really great. I knew you were a great cook and ive cooked many of your recipes like the french toast pizza but this second channel is a whole other gold mine. Keep it up brah 👍

I think creators have some responsibility to make their content more "clickable" but not necessarily clickbait. It's more like advertising IMO. Especially if you think your content is really important, you need to make sure it gets out to people.

The thing that doesn't sit right with that video, was that it felt like he needed to explain away something he was doing, as if he didn't think it was right. If the goal his goal was to make money, then so be it. Likewise, if the goal was to go viral and reach a broader audience. Instead, we're told that the goal is something else, and here's why the methods chosen to accomplish that something else is not bad... If it's not that bad, then you don't need to explain yourself. It also felt like he was describing something akin to better marketing to contend with competition, and equating that to overblown clickbait. I don't think the "better packaging" argument is a fair way to explain away overblown clickbait either- putting a gift in a paper bag or a red gift bag doesn't change what's inside, but one of the two is likely more appealing. Putting a package of gum in a giant gift bag with tissue paper and ribbons... That's deceit, and it's likely to annoy the consumer. And yes, you got me to buy the package of gum... but now I'm upset about the waste and the trickery. Couldn't you just, create a better but more appropriate wrapper? That's what I feel like clickbait is, or at least the type of clickbait that is problematic. I wish the founder of Veritasium was just more comfortable admitting that they want to be successful so they can make money and be well known in their field. That doesn't have to exclude wanting to be a science educator, but specifically leaving that part out of the explanation feels a little bit disingenuous. You don't even have to frame it as wanting to be rich and famous, but boiling it down to just wanting to educate the masses makes me feel LESS likely to trust that creator- especially since that video was created to present a feeling of transparency. ... I guess that might have been a bit of unintentional clickbait.

I like the discussion of the pursuit of money as a youtuber being somewhat artistically dubious, at least insofar as attempting to package it as “it’s actually for better production (which costs money) A smaller youtuber could justify their need for clickbait out of a desire for growth in their niche, especially if they feel under represented among their peers, but it is still basically just… money. I’m a smaller youtuber that is attempting to better my thumbs and titles, (guilty of the red arrow) and while more money is excellent (and I’m a freelancer for work, so more is sadly always the mantra) I would like to say that I’m doing it because I enjoy the creation process of the videos, and the feeling I get when someone enjoys, engages with, or learns something from my videos is really satisfying. But is that just still hunting fame and recognition? I don’t know. This was cool, didn’t expect a thoughtful rebuttal of clickbait acceptance in this video, so thanks.

If the content is worthwile and meaningful, then I don’t care what the thumbnail is. At various points in the video you do indeed come across as an ideologue. I think you raise valid points as to creators needing to be clear as to what the intentions of the video are, but it seems snarky to question the motives of someone who’s stated intentions are explicitly to reach a wider audience with great science content. Moreover, I don’t think we should shift responsibility for harmful algorithmic social media tinkering to the creators on the platform. I dont think you do that exactly but it’s an easy leap to make after saying that more people should “self-soothe” in their artistic pursuits. All artists have to work within the systems they portray work in, and while some personal responsibility is warranted, I really think the system here should be focused on, not it’s users.

@jasongarman

That was a thoughtful critique, but I agree that Shaq comes across as a rigid ideologue on this topic. Wanting to get attention and make money off of art are perfectly normal and legitimate goals, and if that art is videos on KZbin they have to engage with the algorithm at some level to achieve that. That means modifying things like their titles and thumbnails, and if someone is modifying those things with the sole purpose of getting more clicks, I think it's reasonable to call that "clickbait". The definition of click bait is of course extremely subjective, but much of this video comes across as a pedantic semantic argument of "I agree with that point, but I wouldn't call it clickbait."

I used to watch his videos, but I don't really watch them any more, they've become less educational, and more entertainment. This seems to happen not uncommonly , at least in the tech/science sort of YT channel sector. I start watching because they're heavy (and accurate) with the science/tech, and then over time, they lose that bit, and become more like entertainment. maybe edu-tainment, with heavier weight on the -tainment. If a content creator has a Patreon, and I like their stuff, and they stay more-or-less true to their roots, then I'll kick them down a couple bucks a month. I figure it's more than they'd get from my ad views, and it cuts out the middleman, who sometimes will de-monetize videos for various reasons. I understand that most people aren't going to do that, though, so I don't mind some degree of 'I need to make money' aspects of their videos. But too much of that, and you lost me.

Several people are saying they're here because of the title, but these sorts of ambiguous titles do nothing for me, and I'm inclined to ignore them, especially from some creator I don't consistently keep up with. I clicked because I saw Shaq's community post saying he would be posting non-food content here, and linking to this vid on the second channel. I wasn't aware he even had a second channel. It looks like he only created it recently, so I'd have clicked on just about anything bringing me to more content from him, but if this showed up in my sidebar, and I didn't know who he was, I'd have absolutely passed this video by.

Veritasium's original Asteroid title was arguably more fear inducing than the revised one, and the point was that the "successful" (by revenue) titles are the ones which pique the most curiosity. Clickbait, as you point out when critiquing his Collatz Conjecture example, is when that curiosity is piqued in bad faith, possibly through titles misleading the viewer about the content. The first I ever heard the term was related to Buzzfeed, predating the "emphatic portrait with catchy video titles" we see on KZbin today. You bring up interesting perspectives in this video as always, but dismissing his approach because it's fuelled by money feels reductive. He runs a corporation with employees that have families. His goal of producing high quality educational content the way he does requires a revenue stream and I don't fault him for his pursuit. TikTok's success tells me enough about what kind of social media platforms spawn as the result of human tendencies. The more interesting conversation to me is how we can better avoid the media which funnel content by popularity.
