Welcome to Neura Pod, where we share updates about the company Neuralink. This Elon Musk-founded company is working on surgical brain implants, that’ll enable humans to talk to each other telepathically, and help paralyzed people walk again.
Unfortunately, the journey to achieving these goals is not a straight line. The engineering required to make these devices is fraught with challenges. There are also plenty of doubters, skeptics, and people who are genuinely afraid of what could happen with the new tech. This has once again become apparent recently as numerous headlines have claimed animal abuse and mistreatment at the company.
This update episode will start with the allegations being made, then share the highlights of Neuralink’s response. Next, we’ll have highlights of Lex Fridman’s interview with Tim Urban, the creator of the popular website and blog: WaitButWhy. After that, we’ll talk about an exciting trip Omar and I recently took to Kernel’s company headquarters right outside Los Angeles, California- which as a reminder is the brain-interface company Elon once considered joining. Then, we’ll share highlights of Joe Rogan’s interview with KZbin phenom- Mr. Beast where they ended up chatting about Neuralink quite a bit. We’ll also share an update on the potential merging of Tesla, SpaceX, Neuralink, and the Boring Company. Lastly, we’ll discuss Neuralink and Kernel and their respective hiring needs. I also share I’ve started a company to help retirees do consulting work as easily and flexibly as possible: Reterns. www.reterns.com/

As a vegan, I'll say once again that I support Neuralink 100%. Here's why, much of which you already covered: 1. Neuralink isn't the one requiring animal testing. Every time Elon posts an update, the comments are flooded with humans begging to be in the early trials. Neuralink can't legally proceed to humans without testing on animals first. Within the constraints of the law, they're going above and beyond to proceed as compassionately as possible. 2. Some animals dying from the first surgeries is not indicative of negligence. Humans die even from routine surgeries. The deaths are not the ethical concern here; the flaw in ethics is that the animals can't be informed about the surgery and its risks, and while they can opt out of activities, they can't opt out of surgery. Whose fault is that? Not Neuralink's, it's the law's. And before anyone says Neuralink could choose not to introduce their product, I wanna say check your ableism. 3. I say this next part not to preach, only to point out hypocrisy: people will point fingers at Neuralink because their animals spend too much time sitting, then these same people will go eat a burger made from a cow who didn't have enough room to turn around in its cage. For that matter, these people should look at their own pets left home alone all day while they're at work. Fixating on the imperfect conditions of animals in a legally required protocol is such a distraction if your goal is animal welfare. There are more effective routes for activism. Trashing on Neuralink's testing isn't about caring for animals, it's about technophobia. 4. This may seem a stretch, but it's a personal reason for me. I hope Neuralink will eventually enhance our understanding of the brain and help us decode our minds. And I hope that this technology will transfer into also helping us understand animals better. What if we could eventually communicate a little more clearly with other species? How amazing would that be? It's quite a ways off and maybe it will never happen, but I'm hopeful. ❤️ Thanks as always for making these videos. Cheers to Neuralink for striving to create a better future, and cheers to you for spreading the word.

I love this posting. I 100% want the chip too. There are 1000s of companies testing on animals at the exact same time but due to the fact he is so well known only he seems to be getting any heat from probably many ppl who never even once cared about animal testing until finding out elon had to.

Great comment! Just 1 point: How do you think the law can change, so animals could be able to opt out of surgery? Also, I think it's perfectly right to test on animals, rather than humans, until the technology works well enough, no matter that we can't collect their consent.

You make such high-quality content, keep up the good work. So much of modern medicine, implants, cardiac devices, pharmaceuticals etc. rely on animal testing. So what's the alternative? Not test on animals and go right to humans? Or just not test at all and have no medical advancement? I don't understand the logic here. There is some inherent risk in advancing anything new.

The problem with the anti-animal research activists, is what is the alternative? If you ask them directly, they will literally say they'd prefer that you use humans. I've had long debates at Uni with them and at the very foundation of their argument, that is their response. Perhaps we could be giving animals pain killers and monitoring their brain wave patterns to make sure they're not being tortured tho? My family raises dogs so I also don't like animals suffering.
@ConnoisseurOfExistence
@ConnoisseurOfExistence 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I know them, they're crazy. We should always strive to minimize any suffering, but animal testing is very necessary, before human trials. In that line of thought, should we ask bacteria for consent, before giving someone a medicine that will kill the bacteria? Should we ask the ants for consent, before we build a house or a road over their home? Animals might be very valuable, especially high mammals like monkeys, elephants, dolphins, but we can't simply put them before humans.

Interesting. Very interesting. Why not clone yourself and test on it. After just terminate your clone. Give it great food and what not. Should be the same thing. Unless you see the video of something bad happening to your clone. Guess I don't have a solution, unless... They test it on the dead animals or human. Don't know if that's possible or dangerous, bit ya that makes it OK in my brain.
@Jbond7777
@Jbond7777 2 жыл бұрын
@@ConnoisseurOfExistence Really so an animal is innocent. Bacteria is innocent but does not have self awareness. Make a clone of yourself then test on it. Terminate it after. So your all good until you see a leaked video of your clone suffering. The ego of human are ridiculous 🙄 😒. Yes I eat meat. Crazy maybe but I don't put human life over other life. Also I'm not a phsycho. Elephants have a ceremony for the dead. Humans do not have the largest brains in the animal kingdom, I believe whales do. Also this tech is very new. Needs to be randomly tested without notice. This tech can easily control actions of a human being or chimp or animal. Take the pill plug yourself into your MUSK car. Enjoy your life. Until it's not yours. Then I will be there to pop your hypnotized brains 🧠 😉 😜.

When it is genuine what neuralink is saying, and it's probably easy to check, they provide the least amount of harm to any living animal under captive conditions. I'm excited to, but I don't know the most effective way to get it as soon as possible, I'm open of course to human trials and the risk. I really wish they would make a rule the person must pass a test regarding their mental state, if narcissistic, if grred and power driven, if a psychopath. Make it only possible to get for people who prove to truly care about the wellbeing of others.

I was super excited about the monkey pong too. But then I learned such experiments are done already before, exactly with monkeys and pong game. The actual progress of Neuralink is that the device is wireless (unlike any other invasive device before), the movements of the pad controlled by the monkey are smoother than in the previous cases (because Neuralink records from many more channels), and the installation is much faster and safer with the robot, plus the Link is very small and almost invisible.

If neuralink would allow me to Remember, I'd be that test subject in a heartbeat. - I can't stand immediately forgetting something I Just Did or said. - I can't stand trying to read an informative book and forgetting what I just read the second I put the book down. - I can't stand trying to learn a language for Years and not retaining that information. The negative side is that I'd think an emp or strong electromagnetic frequency could scramble the way it works while it's in your brain.

Testing on handicapped monkeys seems like a good step, provided they were handicapped naturally and not gimped for the test. I think the later part is deeply unethical and I hope no such tests have been conducted at Neuralink.

I love your videos and with that in mind I would like to offer a suggestion. When you add yourself in could you use a different camera angle, maybe a more straight on view or even the camera slightly above eye level angles down on you. With the angle that you have now it feels like you are looking down on the people who are talking, and I feel like that’s not what you are trying to convey with your face cam. It would make you feel more on level on them. Again I love your videos and I hope you continue to improve and prosper while making them.

I fully believe that we should use animals to help humans (I'm a massive neuralink simp) but I also believe that animals are our 'spiritual younger siblings', therefore we must protect them and give them the best possible life. So, HOW did these animals die? Were they in pain or disabled as a result of testing when they died?

forget holo deck suites for your gaming adventure , with an advance neural implant that could connect us to a "matrix" 😁 ; we could be playing games like WOW , minecraft , halo , skyrim , etc which would seem to us to be "REAL LIVE" action ; course there is always the safety issue that the game does not actually kill us IRL because of some extreme pain , event , seizure , etc

I wonder if neuralink could make a connection from the visual cortex in the brain to glasses that have a camera installed. You can buy glasses with miniature high res cameras molded into the frame. I saw a sample video from one and it looked pretty good. If these images could be transmitted directly to the brain it would allow blind people to see again.

This is my assumption. The brain's "processing speed" and "storage" capabilities are mostly decided by genetics. Neuralink could allow us to artificially increase our brain's processing speed and storage. So, I wonder if that would reduce or eliminate cognitive discrepancies from one person to another? Will everyone be about the same intelligence? Will there be different models of the neuralink chip? Will one model outperform the other? On another note. How will it affect us psychologically, once we have a high-bandwidth interface between our minds and technology (I know that "technology" is too general of a word, but you know what I mean)? Will we be better equipped to deal with the issues of today's information overload? Or will we exacerbate that issue? How will this technology affect the way we think, behave, and feel? I don't think there's a dime chance in hell that anyone can answer all of these questions definitively. I just like sharing my thoughts. I hope that I at least entertained whoever read this!

Imo, people should check "Humanism" wiki article, because I think many ppl are using this term wrong. As far as I can understand, generally, humanism prioritizes human being life above everything else. And imo it doesn't matter at all how human beings treat animals as long as it increases our quality of life. And wasting money and man-hours which is the most valuable resource in terms of humanism on such things as treating ANIMAL in humane and ethical way just to treat it that way so zoo-green-animal activists won't attack you is just madness. We need to reevaluate our values to make them less hypocritical before we'll waste too much human lives on unprofitable, ineffective an useless activities.
