maybe, trying to recall as much as you can would be a good exercise for your brain and lead to synaptogenesis. Take 2 words, for example: “drug” + “car” , and try to recall all the memories relating to “drug” and “car”, for example: 1) a pharmacist who purchased a car

About 4-5 years ago, in some interview, Elon had said that the EV revolution would have happened even without Tesla. I don't remember his words precisely, but it was something like that: "The transition to electric cars would have happened anyway, Tesla just accelerated the process by 5-10 years." I see now that Tesla has accelerated this process by at least 15-20 years, maybe more. But lithium battery technology was already established, just on a much smaller scale. I really wish Elon or someone else would speed up the process with neurological disorders at least half of what Tesla did with ICE automakers. Right now, most people over 80 are suffering or will soon be suffering from some neurological disorder. This is hundreds of millions of people! Just imagine how much suffering that would avoid. Does anybody know is it even possible to accelerate this kind of research? Anyway, thanks for the video! Really interesting!

Another great update! Thanks, Ryan. It’s interesting, articles have stated issues with NeuraLink, specifically Elon, being more favorable to engineering and putting a back burner to the science. I’m not a scientist and I don’t begrudge their works but it would seem the engineering technology is the bottleneck at this point in time. I’m not saying it’s the right thought process but it’s a process I understand and I’m glad he’s tackling the materials engineering/engineering first. Once that’s solved the amount of scientist wanting The Link to try their experiments will skyrocket. Some may choose not to but that’s why there’s plenty of room for every kind of BMI. One BMI won’t solve everything.

The issue is: It's not just an engineering problem. The problem stems from the fact that not all of the science is there to begin with. A lot of the science that would need to be incorporated into such a device is quite literally still in its infancy right now.

Thanks for the continued support Magnamic. I think you both, (Magnamic & Cao Cao Games) bring up fair points. I tend to believe engineering + tinkering can unlock real scientific discoveries. Hi I'm JohnLevT, let me clarify my thoughts. The keyword in my question to Max Hodak was "evolutive". As Max said, in MS, you loss electrical insulation, that's true, but not everywhere at the same time, it's a long process. If I understand, Neuralink is hopping to help people with dead or unfunctional neurons (like strokes or brain damage), and that's exactly the case of an MS patient. To me the only difference is the "evolutive" side. An implent needs some working neurons to connect to. And in MS you have working neurons, but they can be affected in the future. Maybe, your implent will work, and as the illness evolves, won't work so well. But then, can't we "connect" the implant to other neurons ? Even people with evolutive eye impairment wear glasses, they change them to match their new needs, that's it. So my real questions are : Will it be affordable, for somebody with an evolutive brain disease, to "change" (or update) the implent to follow the disease ? If the operation takes only 30 minutes, maybe we can make an update every X month ? How long does it takes to "adapt" to a new implant ? And, how can an implant be usefull to understand the disease ? Last but not least, what about brain plasticity ? Is it the secret power of an implant ? Is it the "adaptation" ?
@NeuraPod

Thanks for sharing your thoughts John. I still have lots to learn about to speak about the technical details more clearly. I just stopped short of adding these thoughts in the video: I think in the longer term, Neuralink will do all they can to help with brain+ related challenges/ disorders. Whether it's through an electrical implant or with some other prosthetic + other device, it wouldn't surprise me if they decide to make it. Will be cool to see if we get conclusive answers to your questions in the coming months.

@@NeuraPod I'm glad to see I'm not the only one to feel that I need to learn more :) I hope we could get scientific answers too. The community here is bigger and bigger and it's always a pleasure to exchange ideas. A lot of brain disorders/diseases have no cure right now and not many solutions to ease the symptoms. Neuralink is to me (and I think a lot of people feel like me), the hope to have a normal life. For millions of people, the first step isn't to extand human capabilities, but simply getting human capabilities. And correct me if I'm wrong : it's not about connecting an implant to a brain, but connecting a brain to an implant. I believe that's the case for cochlear implants through brain plasticity. So we put new hardware in our brains, and he adapts himself to use it. If someone with scientific knowledge read this, please feel free to correct me :)

Sarif was right about one thing. It's in our nature to want to rise above our limits. Think about it. We were cold, so we harnessed fire. We were weak, so we invented tools. Every time we met an obstacle, we used creativity and ingenuity to overcome it. The cycle is inevitable... but will the outcome always be good? I guess that will depend on how we approach it. These past few months, I was challenged many times, but more often than not, didn't I try to keep morality in mind, knowing that my actions didn't have to harm others? Time and time again, didn't I resist the urge to abuse power and resources simply to achieve my goals more swiftly? In the past, we've had to compensate for weaknesses, finding quick solutions that only benefit a few. But what if we never need to feel weak or morally conflicted again? What if the path Sarif wants us to take enables us to hold on to higher values with more stability? One thing is obvious. For the first time in history, we have a chance to steal fire from the gods. To turn away from it now - to stop pursing a future in which technology and biology combine, leading to the promise of a Singularity - would mean to deny the very essence of who we are. No doubt the road to get there will be bumpy, hurting some people along the way. But won't achieving the dream be worth it? We can become the gods we've always been striving to be. We might as well get good at it. - Deus Ex Human Revolution

Thank you for bringing the MS topic "back" Did I get it right... No neuralink for MS patients until someone found a way to cure it? ......then the last chance is with biontech (for cure) And the damage is already done, so I need a neuralink device anyway
@NeuraPod
@NeuraPod 2 жыл бұрын
Hi GHSxBloodrage. Thanks for the support + question. Unfortunately I need to start with a disclaimer: I don't know very much about the brain and I'm certainly not an expert. Based on the research I've done, it seems that a Neuralink implant could help MS in the very early stages; however, as the disease progresses, the implant would become less and less useful. It wouldn't surprise me if Neuralink eventually decides to tackle this challenge of helping MS patients more, but maybe it won't be as much of a priority as some of the other diseases that are "easier" to find solutions for.
@GHSxBloodrage
@GHSxBloodrage 2 жыл бұрын
I already thought that I will not be able to use all the functions of the neuralink or that I will have to create certain workarounds and I´m cool with it... But the statement of Max Hodak also reads that they fear that the use of a neuralink implant could worsen the disease or the progression of it ... And biontech announced at the beginning of the year that they might be able to offer a cure in the form of a vaccination in two years... Now it remains to be seen what will come out By the way, to avoid misunderstandings: when I talk about to cure the MS, I mean that the error in the immune system is fixed and the disease can no longer progress... The damage to the brain is there and will remain there. I agree, MS will not be high on the priority list, but I can imagine that it will be on it...so it's wait and see.

I know eventually it gets to the point where new technology is needed in some ways and if you have anything lesser it would significantly effect your life and enjoyment.. but I really hope that this isn’t the case with neutral link, my hope is that there is still a want and reliance familiar technology in the future. Of course in the future all this will be upgraded and enhanced, but I truly hope the divide between us is not further magnified by this innovation in technology.. i think this will be the case simply because a lot of people won’t want to get this, but it would definitely still be a must for people to be able to connect with others later on while not having had any cybernetic enhancements.

I am weird about this, only because I feel that over reliance on technology in almost every form, can be easily exploited by very bad people to gain insight and control over others in some way or another. As long as human tribalism and hatred remain, everything will be weaponized..

@NeuraPod 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the support Regular Noah. I personally believe college is becoming less and less necessary. It's practically just a very expensive insurance policy (providing a backstop of a paper degree in the case all things hit the fan). Even then, it's uncertain if the degree will actually matter much. I know high schoolers who have developed very real programming skills and were interns at Tesla prior to going to college. I believe there's potential to do the same at Neuralink.
@michoxi
@michoxi 2 жыл бұрын
What you need to be capable of is building real life products and get really smart. Depending where in the world you are college could or could not help. If you have access to free education i would recommend something fundamental with a broad outlook such as physics and then go work in some startup's to do some real stuff before going into one of the highest performing companies in the world. Don't worry there is enough problems to be solved in the world and there are no shortcuts in life. Of you want to work on such things you have to become the person that solves these things. That means read a lot. Like all the time you spend on friends or TV should go into books for 2-3 years. And the wider the topics the better. You need to become a well rounded individual, not just the best at one thing (which is incredibly hard anyways)

This is actually a good and important point. Neuralink will not only be able to "read" but also to "write". While we don't yet know what really will be possible, it could very well be able to basically brainwash you into an entirely new person. Of course, you as "user" should be always in absolute power over your Neuralink or better to say: Over the Software / The devices you are using. It's a very, very important security question (we might even need new laws like: The right to your own thoughts. The right to not be altered by software, etc.). Besides that: If it is possible to alter your personality, down to the very core, like sexual preferences etc. and you want to change that with the help of Neuralink, I don't see any reason to don't allow that. EDIT: Or simply as that: We say your body, your choice. Let's expand this to: Your mind, your choice.
@retroman355

@@prometheus9096 ive always wanted to hear a discussion on this. I was wondering could you change sexuality or someone else's. I haven't heard anyone talk about it.

let's give ourselves an emergency only pain override, and let people with conditions like fibro that has incurable chronic pain some level of access to it that has been found to be therapeutic. should be more dynamic and precise than painkilling drugs. You could even do a lot to identify types of pains that are likely to be non-damage related, where you would want to retain much of the pain response experience for behavioral reasons.
@betterlifeexe4378
@betterlifeexe4378 2 жыл бұрын
we also have a buffet of approaches, we could try and alter the persons state of mind such that they don't experience the pain as negative, such as a disassociated state - likely only for severe cases when the need arises... we could try and have a more traditional dopamine - like painkilling effect that is simply stimulated more closely to overwrite errant pain messages, we could even try and block the memory of pain, where much of the trauma is actually experienced. Truth be told, I think it was selling such a device short when saying it's "not a good fit" for fibro. It's like how people dogpiled on him about how it wouldn't be an effective treatment for autism, Like of course it is! It is going to be a huge platform for optimizing the performance of the brain. Even if those things aren't directly related to that persons underlying condition, it is going to enable them to preform better than they otherwise would. This is true of many anxiety/depression focused treatment models.

So why don’t we focus on candidates that have family histories of MS but not “active” MS and gather data from that perspective to make sure we eradicate MS in the future... anyone living with someone with current MS diagnosis will be a candidate and will be grateful as well as Persian with MS be grateful to know that their lives one is not able to get MS expressed... perhaps??? 💌📫
