Passion. A mother's passion. A young's man's passion. A beautiful girl's passion. A believable tale because as humans we are all people of passion and not above letting it get the better of us. Thank you for your excellent rendition of a great story.

If this is AI, it's superior to almost all human narrators. This channel is extraordinary, and SM is better than most Nobel winners.

The girl was incredibly stupid. One does not try to mess with a woman who is capable of murder out of passion, especially when she knows her story. It would have happened the same way in real life. She taunted her to kill her.

Wow, that was brutal and realistic! I’m panting, a mere story can stir up emotions. I feel sorry for the son who may not find out that the mother was indeed protecting him from the careless and insane Rosalia. Who knows what Rosalia would have done to ruin the son’s life.

Yes, there were some odd emphases, as if of a limited range. But it has the name, Simon Stanhope. I guess they could give it a name to try to give it some personality. Besides, listened to several audiobooks on this channel, the voice is always exactly the same, but with different names. And sometimes it makes odd mistakes like mispronouncing "bow."

Suspicious!! I know Simon Stanhope’s channel. His reading is distinctive, some might say mannered, but I’ve grown to like it. I didn’t spot his name in the description.

@@quickchris10 I don't see Simon Stanhope's name anywhere, and it sounds very much like AI, a computer voice to me. I listen to Simon regularly and this is not his voice.

What a story. One tragedy after another.

I usually like Maugham's stories so much, but I don't like this one. He's attributing an incredibly possessive love to the mother - she'd previously killed to protect her son, not to enslave him. I don't like the son either, because he seems totally ungrateful for the enormous sacrifice she had made for him. It's a story about an ungrateful, careless son, a girl who despises that man's mother, and a mother driven mad by the thought of losing the son for whom she'd already sacrificed so much. Surely somewhere somehow somebody could have shown the mother some kindness?
@42kellys2 ай бұрын
Surely, but that's not what people do. They are quite like those in the story.

Dear, you haven't had a jealous mother-in-law. I had one, she was pretty much the same.
@alidabaxter5849Ай бұрын
@@rumin528 I didn't have a jealous mother-in-law - I simply had one who believed her son was God and nobody was good enough for him. Unfortunately he believed her. She even derided his father in front of him, so I wasn't the only one to suffer. I have no idea whether her next daughter-in-law was good enough, but that wife didn't speak English so she wouldn't have known what was being said to her, and the happy couple spent the rest of their lives in another country, which must have made everything a bit easier. But I do still feel sorry for the woman in this story because she seems to have had such an awful time, while most of the mothers of sons I've known have been deferred to in everything. I hope you survived.

💢 I talk about the Story. Do Not Read Before listening!!! Sorry, Simon, your reading was very good, but i don’t agree with the interpretation. what a horrible story. i never thought to read anything like this from Maughm. of course, it wasn’t read with the pathos it should have been read with. one’s sympathy should be with her. she’d sacrificed her whole life for her son. yes, she was psychologically twisted, but the girl was very mean, as was the son. this is truly a tragedy 🎭
@maryearll33593 ай бұрын
Feralbluee - Maugham was a very good reader of his times and the people. I believe that some of his writing was to highlight the issues he saw and that his stories of the wealthy were sometimes written with tongue in cheek also echoing the imbalance of the times.
@kauffrau67643 ай бұрын
Agree it was a tragic tale. I could feel the mother’s pain. The ending was inevitable.

That's a very possesive mother. Her son had the right to fall in love. I guess you think he had to give up his life so he won't make his mother jealous. That's ridiculous.
@kunnakunna1508Ай бұрын
Nice story .Most mothers like to mother their sons without realising that the son has to leave her apron strings and will fall in love in time to come .The tussle for the young man''s love is the cause of many quarrels between mother in laws and daughters in law ..Quite common amongst the indians l should say .
