Maria Roberta Cilio, MD, PhD, Université Catholique de Louvain, Brussels, Belgium, discusses the emergence of the neonatal neurocritical care model, which focuses on improving long-term neurological outcomes through brain-oriented care. Specialist neurocritical care units first emerged in the form of stroke units in the ‘80s and ‘90s, where patients could be treated by both neurologists and intensive care specialists. The first pediatric neurocritical care units came in the 2000s, and Dr Cilio was part of a team that developed the first neurocritical care unit for neonates in 2008. Huge progress has been seen in survival of neonatal critical care patients in the past few decades; now, a key aim is improvement in quality of life and neurological outcomes. Dr Cilio highlights that last year, training in neonatal neurocritical care was approved as a sub-specialty in the US and Canada.
