📌See my exact calculations for the video: nicktalksmoney.ck.page/aabcacd0c4 📌Start investing so you can (potentially) end up like these guys when you’re 40: nicktalksmoney.com/public Neurosurgeon vs Fire Fighter: who makes more?💵 Assumptions👇 - 50% savings rate, all of which is invested & earns 8%/yr - Salary rises 2% per year - Student loans have interest rates of 5% - Salaries listed are after-taxes - Neurosurgeon pays off student loans before investing - Average undergrad debt upon graduation: $26,000 - Average med school debt upon graduation: $200,000 The largest assumption: this assumes BOTH people will make consistent, great choices with their money. As you’re aware, this can be quite rare, despite your income level😬 Income-wise, Neurosurgery is the DEFINITION of delayed gratification: you have to go through 8 years of higher education & another 7 years of residency, but starting pay is $400k+ & it’s very common for experienced neurosurgeons to make upper 6-figures. Despite “average” incomes, fire fighters can still build real wealth if they prioritize investing early & often! Obviously, you shouldn’t pursue either career path if you’re ONLY interested in the money. These are pursuits with a greater purpose. Term you need to know: NET WORTH. Your net worth = your assets (cash, stocks, etc) - your liabilities (debts, loans, etc)✍️ When someone says they’re a millionaire, they’re referencing their NET WORTH, not their INCOME for the year💵 Follow to learn more of what school SHOULD’VE taught you about money🧠 Appreciate you! -Nick . . . . . . The amount of people that aren’t realizing you can do this and just invest less it can still apply? People never heard of an s and p 500. Or index funds or anything. Compound interest is a thing that can make you a lot more money compared to what you put in(only over time it isn’t instant). This is also how very rich people get richer. They can put a shit ton more and make MUCH more interest ALOT faster and for longer.

Actually, I highly advise against putting half of your paycheck into investing only making 48k a year. It's not bad by any means, but with that money, I don't recommend putting in more than 30 percent. Because taxes still exist. As a Neurosurgeon, do whatever you want with that money. But even then, 50 percent still isn't the best idea. You could have way more money in other places that could truly be more helpful. Like a retirement fund, or an S&P500, or index funds, or saving, or whatever.

The fire fighter’s net worth is only valid if he saved every single penny he ever made, which is unrealistic.

Being a Fire Fighter is more dangerous compared to a neurosurgeon and you have to go through physical training for Fire Fighters

Investing half of 48k a year would make you have to live on the streets

Although a firefighter making 50k a year may not be able to do this, EVERYONE can invest if they pay taxes, since if you invest you don't pay as much taxes. Does that mean if you make just enough money to pay taxes, you make enough money to invest, or is it more complicated than that? I don't know.

Just a quick quip here, even if you did manage to outpace a neurosurgeon financially, the retirement benefits are much greater and the day-to-day work load is more precise than it is physically taxing meaning that the health issues you'd run into are fewer and the benefits I mentioned would cover the costs of the medical bills. Bottom line: while I respect that you're trying to bring attention to the necessary jobs that are being forsaken for college people should do what they want since a career is a lifetime obligation.

OK while it is pretty cool to invest I think that should be your main focus because you are only using money from the job which means that a neurosurgeon could also invest and even with debt ultimately surpass a firefighters net worth. Also I understand that you are just showing the variety of jobs that can still make you rich.

We need both of those actually making a ton of money or not. If your house catches on fire you will call a firefighter but if you need to reattach your fingers back to your hand you need a neurologist to do it not a firefighter so besides comedy you cant compare them

It’s a genuine concern that he’s telling people to invest 50% of their income, financial classes are pretty sparse, so they’re likely to believe him, and investing 50% of your money is a very bad idea.

Bruh, why does it stop at 40 people work untill 65-70 usually. Also, investing half of 400k salary is so much easier than investing half of a 40k salary.
