Fascinating instrument, I've never seen the inside of a Mellotron before.

m400 #1098 here. you should mention that on the original cello set, the session cellist refused to detune, so the lowest six notes or so are a bowed bass instead. very distinctive.

One of the things that I love the mellotron is the running tape effect, some old movies used to do that thing and I just love that effect, unique and perfect

Thanks for watching! I'm not sure I know what the "running tape effect" is, could you please explain further? Thank you!
@Taremioca69

@neutralearth1061 it's simple, just press a note with the violin effect and let the note go until the note runs out (it's sounds better with a chord)

I never realized how close the motor is to some of the tapes. I guess the magnetic field isn't strong enough to erase the tapes. Wonderful demonstration of the Mellotron!

Thanks for watching! Yeah, you'd think they could have put some type of barrier between the motor and the tapes. I would hope they measured the magnetic field and determined a barrier wasn't needed.

Nice video. Tho I’ve read several books on the mellotron, this hands on tutorial really puts it into perspective. There is a time limit as to how long a note plays from the time you hold it down, correct…8 seconds??? Thanks for sharing!
@neutralearth1061

Thanks! Yes, the tapes will play approximately 8 seconds. Now this might seem to some a major fault to some keyboard players, but in actuality it forces the player to use what is now known to experienced Mellotron players as the "Crawling Spider" technique to get around the sustain limitation when longer sustain times are required.

Excellent tour! For 1972 that Mellotron looks pretty great!

It would look even better if I hadn't sold it in 1989. I bought it back from the guy I sold it to in 2011. The previous owner didn't give it the same love and attention I give it.

@@Frog7609 LOL, I heard the loud clunk as I was removing the lid, but didn't realized I whacked the keyboard until after I watched the video. I'm a klutz! But a loving klutz! LOL.

LOL! I don't usually play or learn cover songs, but that is the ONE Mellotron part I did learn! Because as you said, It is "Mellotron Law". But I didn't play it here because my muscle disease has affected my hands and fingers to the point where it's difficult to play.
