Can't do this in NY anymore. You have to buy certified bait from a dealer and carry receipt with date of purchase (good for one week only). If you catch your own bait fish, you have to use it right away in the same water where you caught it. The DEC is afraid of spreading disease from one body of water to another. Even if you catch bait one day and take it home and use it in the same water the next day they don't allow it. If you take it overland, they assume you caught it somewhere else and you get a ticket.

Ya we are very lucky. As far as I know Ontario is only province in Canada allowing live bait use. But we have zones here. I can’t take these minnows outside of my zone unless they are salted. We just recently have been allowed to take are own dead minnows outside of are zone. Won’t be long we will not be allowed either ! Tight lines Thanks for watching!!!

Michigan has similar laws. They also don't allow cast nets to catch minnows. Which only encourages people to catch and transport. If they don't want you transporting bait, then make it as easy as possible for people to catch their own bait on the lakes they fish. Because where I live in southern Michigan you would have to drive over an hour to go get minnows.
@GalensFishing
@GalensFishing 5 ай бұрын
@charlesronk2989 weird rules for sure, we're lucky to be the only province left in Canada allowed to use live bait, the rest of the country is dead bait only has to be salted or cured crazy

@@GalensFishing As a kid we would go to Wakami Lake Provincial Park every year the first two weeks of July. The Mayflies would hatch and we would troll #0 & #1 mepps spinners. We would catch like 30 Lake Whitefish each evening. That is what started me into fishing. 😀

Used to have access to a property that had a pond that was spring fed. In the early winter you could go to the bank the warm oxygenated water was seeping under and knock in the ice, you would see thousands of them there for the scooping. Unfortunately we are not allowed to use live bait here - par for the course in overregulated Alberta.

Thanks for watching!!!!!! Ya I go out in the yard at night after it rains and worms are always on top of the grass No digging just have to be quick Most lakes will have minnows in winter as well it’s just harder to find the area there in to set your trap. Small ponds are almost guaranteed

Great vid! I'm looking forward to trying to catch some winter bait! Is there a reason you use bread instead of dry dog food for bait? In the summer that is all I use. It holds up longer than bread.
@GalensFishing
@GalensFishing 6 ай бұрын
I find the dog food kind of makes the minnow water gross and harder to seperate from the minnows. The bread is basically all gone after fills up. The ends of the load hold up better. Dog food definitely lasts longer in water just gross to remove in my opinion. I’m picky lol Tight lines hopefully you get your own supply !!!

Why don’t you just tie a big red balloon to the trap also buddy! Ha ha ! Right along the highway. Ha you must like buyin traps then, cuz over here in my part of Ontario they’d be gone. Listen, find yourself a nice quiet little back lake or pond make yourself some homemade traps 12”x20” max and set them on the bottom with no dam rope or string tied to em and shove em under the ice so no one can see em. That way if some jerk does come along he looks down the hole and sees nothing. Figures someone was trapping but has moved on. Make yourself a hook on a pole and simply feel under the ice and hook it back. No more stolen traps. Catchin big suckers works best if your traps are on the bottom. Unless you want little dace like buddy is catchin here. Ok for speckles or splake, but if your after big lakers like me the bigger the bait the bigger the trout. Big suckers this year 26 bucks a dozen! No frickin way man
