@@doodletechnologies3189 I think a lot of them don't want to be in the business of supplying parts for vehicles not in production. I've heard people argue about whether or not there really is a law saying they have to supply parts for some length of time, but I can imagine them pricing them really high to discourage people, yet be compliant with the law. I can't believe the FWD axles Honda sells (600+ dollars each) are 6x better than those I see for around 100.

my question is how many of those OEM parts made in the same factory as the after market parts. Seems to me there is probably only so many companies actually building alternators for example.
@travispratt6327
@travispratt6327 5 жыл бұрын
David Kearns Well, they could use different tolerances and specifications to get a cheaper price even if it’s the exact same factory, but with that being said a lot of parts have to pass certain standards and safety minimums, so it’s probably very similar if not the same.

As usual, you are right on target Scotty. But here is what you missed.... When you go to the dealer for a repair, they don't always use the OEM part you expect them to use. Most of the time they order the part from the local Auto Parts store as you would, but they charge you the OEM list price for that part. I have seen this happen a lot of times when the local parts delivery truck comes into their lot. You don't get what you pay for, there is no way you can be assured you are getting OEM parts unless you are standing right there with the mechanic when he opens the OEM box and displays the part for you. Been there and have seen it happen!

Some people are good with junk quality. Over time you spend more when you dont buy quality. Its the same mindset as those who are rent-a-center or money tree payday loan regulars. +1 for OEM. The scrapyard is my friend! The only time I deviate is when I'm very confident that a newer aftermarket part exceeds the original quality. The key to buying OEM is understand that your dealership can still mark it up 200%. (Not everything, but some things.) If you can find the actual Nippon Denso or NGK or whatever part number, sometimes you can buy it locally or online MUCH cheaper.

The stealership asked what kind of vehicle I had, I told them "it's a 4.0 V6" because I spent 20 years in the auto inspections field, and I know most of their scams, and I know that they come up with new ones all the time so I did not want to give them more information than necessary - the same engine is used in more than one model so their question was irrelevant. They insisted so I told them it was a 4Runner. They wanted $100+ for the belt. I said, OK, it's a Tacoma. $45. I got the same Gates belt at a parts store for $30. Screw stealership!

The revised design thing is a good reason to stick with OEM. A lot of aftermarket parts are based on the original design of a part, and don't get the revisions that OEM does. One other place to always stick to OEM is spark plugs. I've pulled too many wrong-brand plugs (almost always Autolite) out of cars because they were causing misfire when they were still practically brand new. I've personally had tons of problems with the chineseium AC compressors. Clutch failures, bearing failures, leaks, internal failures.

@@mikepantaleo2360 Agree. I am constantly astounded by the low price of brake pads. I usually try to find reasonably 'expensive' ones - like $60 instead of $25, but for my '88 F150 I really only find $25-30 ones (rear set of 4 $28 - I don't even know how they ship them for that) and they always work just fine, no squeaking, seem to last (10 years on my front ones, don't drive it much). Rotors, meh, after having an Audi that when through rotors dater than pads, I just get the cheapest ones. I can't tell the difference.

General rule of thumb: if there is high labor involved, pay more for a better part. On the other hand, if replacement takes a few minutes, and you can save hundreds on part, go for an aftermarket. It may even makes sense to get a spare one just in case. Especially if there are more than one on the vehicle. For example, I needed an ignition coil for my '04 4Runner, and the stealership wanted $200+ AND they didn't even have it in stock. A Napa store next door had it for $40. So I bought two because there are total six, and with 200,000+ miles, another one may go out in the future. It's been four years, and the one I replaced still works just fine. And I tend to disagree about autozone and suchlike being diligent - they cut corners left and right just like any other american corporation.
