The Hollar Homestead

The Hollar Homestead

Күн бұрын

Summer harvest is in full swing, and we are getting things preserved and put away for winter eating. Tomatoes are turning into tomato jam, peppers are turning into hot pepper jelly, and green beans are getting canned as pickled dilly beans and fresh canned green beans. A busy summer day in the kitchen means eating good this winter!

Please tell grandma I said "Thank You" for her brief appearance... I understand her being camera shy... Her sitting there and snapping beans reminded me of my mom, that was her favorite job. I appreciate that warm memory...

These scenes reminded me of visiting my grandparents in the summer ... if seemed that if folks came to visit, all were were either shelling peas or snapping beans while chatting away.

As a grandma gardener I have learned that prior to any big rain.....pick your tomatoes that are blushing. Let them ripen in the house. Better than having them split.

It always tickles me to hear Meg say "Bye" so cheerfully at the end of the videos (... and now Buggie) after she's been working from sunrise to sunset. Can a woman maybe 30-40 years her senior say "When I grow up, I want to be just like Meg Hollar!"?

I’m going to name names here. The 2 that bug me the most are the “ Fit Farmer”, they have become a “ holy roller” ochannel. Not that I care if they are religious but that’s not why I watch homesteading. They seem to always be away from their homestead at talking engagements. And just from the little they do show of their homestead nothings getting done. No weeds should ever be 6 ft tall in a maintained garden. Then there Justin and his family. They spent months clearing a small space for grazing. Over 100 days, only working an hour here and there. Then bring in the hired men to clear a huge area in just 2 days! Well that’s time we’ll never get back. I’m sorry the kids keep getting hurt or sick but man that family sure does talk a lots about all their medical issues. They do so little actually homesteading that even the big greenhouse has almost nothing planted. I don’t begrudge them improving their home but I think they have lost sight of how they got to the point of being able to do all that. It’s because we have kept the financially going. By our likes and views. Now that they have pay to play it’s almost like we have been forgotten…it’s quite sad.

Your grandmother don't look old enough to be a grandmother. Watching her snap greenbeans reminded me of my grandmother. It is also nice to see everyone working together to make short work of jobs. I also like seeing a husband who isn't afraid to help his wife in the canning process, you two just feel my heart with joy. Love your content.

Just discovered the Hollar Family recently; now I'm a fanatic about all of you and binge-watching every day. I so admire you and your family and the life you have chosen. I grew up on a farm and loved it tremendously; however, you are a fine homesteading crew! I finally tried to bake bread like you do; after 60 years, I can finally bake a loaf of bread and I make killer buttery soft biscuits like my mother did...finally. I cannot get my loaves to brown, even with the broil on high. My family has fallen in love with the bread. Thank you, thank you, Meg!!

This brings back memories for me, while we didn’t live on a tiny farm like yours, we lived on a large and my father planted a huge vegetable garden. We would sit around the table and snap beans. Sometimes our friends would come over and my mom would enlist their help, paying us all in ice cream. She used our onions and bell peppers to make tomato sauce. Shes just put it all in the blender them dump it into a big pot to reduce. Then into glass jars and canned. They froze our corn, and cucumbers became dill pickles.and that was just the produce we didn’t have for dinner. My dad like to put everything from the garden on the table. One year my mom decided to learn how to can potato’s because we had so many small potatoes that year. She figured they be good in stew and pot roast. But once she took a jar out and made fried potatoes with them and they were so good! Of course there were also plenty in the freezer. Those were good days when I was a kid. My grandparents had a couple of acres, they raised their own beef and had gardens like yours in the North Idaho panhandle. We Loved going there we had our cousins and played with frogs in grandma’s window wells. We raced them. Grandma said it was okay as long as we put them back in the basement window wells. I love to see children raised with all this.

Gotta love it... yeah, I'm processing 5 different things, but I can do garlic and then dinner with homemade biscuits. 😅. We cannot multitask that well.🥴 Those beans looked overripe. I leave those on the vine to go to seed. Your hot peppers are not hot because you have sweet peppers too close to them. They crossed. Heat shows up in the result of the crossing. Inversely, you could get a hot bell pepper. (I breed peppers.) I made one so hot this year that it stung my eyes to cut it. Yum!🥵 Your tomato harvest is similar to mine... too much rain. It simply will not stop raining! Brassicas are loving it, though. Summer squash is toast. Potatoes are pretty good because that garden drains well. Enjoy the extra farmsteading hands!

Roasted garlic in a pan with oil then Jared up for freezing or canning is something you will thank yourself for later. Use it on pizza, spread it on a roast, add it to a stew etc. The flavor of the roasted garlic is so much more than plain garlic. You have to try it out. Mimi will have to plan on visiting every year during harvest time to keep the tradition of canning and preserving with not only her granddaughter but her great-granddaughter too. What awesome memories you are creating!

When you don't have enough hot peppers to make something big, you can still make relish. I think it's important to recognize that you both have talents.
