way before nosler officaly brought 280ai , it was a wildcat cartage. we had to fire form the brass from 7mm express, or later 280 rem. to make 280ai brass. Parker ackley built me a 280ai barreled action and custom dies. I carved out a French walnut plank, and inletted the action, and glass bedded the beautiful FN supreme action that Parker ackley chambered in 280ai. the rifle was a pleasure to shoot and extremely accurate. took many head of game with that rifle. when I came back from Viet nam some one stole that rifle, it's still on stolen list. I replaced it with one of the first Kimber rifles in 280ai nice rifle, but not an original custom Parker ackley rifle! life it good!

Been shooting a 280 rem Ruger since 1983....deadly round. AI has a litle more so it is a winner in my book. I went with the 280 rem over the 7mm mag because it was lighter and kicks less. Ackley just made it a little better for the longer range stuff. Great round. 280 rem still ain't no whimp and deserves more accolades than it has received.

Finished my 280ai build late last year… the best and most efficient cartridge out there I believe. I’ve worked up several .25 MOA or less with loads from 140 and 160 Accubonds and partitions to as well as Hammer HHT’s. Settled on 2, yes 2, load that’s holding .25 MOA groups out to 300 yards so far with the 153 AND the 162 Hammer HHT over H4350 at 3005 and 3009fps respectfully. I could push them harder but with the groups holding together, the ES and SD numbers in single digits I don’t see a need. It will also shoot Nosler factory accubonds and the Hornady 162 ELDx factory stuff well under a minute! I’ve also heard that several ammo manufacturers are bringing back more loads in the 280ai due to demand!

Did you know that the .277 diameter bullet for the 270 winchester is a more true 7mm than the .284 diameter bullet is. One 7mm I had you don't see anymore is the 7mm stw or shooting times Westerner . I would get awesome velocities from just a 24 inch barrel. A simple rechambering of a 7mm rem mag rifle was all it took to have a rifle in it. The 7mm stw was just an 8mm rem mag necked to 7mm. With some loads the 280 AI can exceed the 7 mm Mag. The 280 Rem is often within 150 fps with some loads. If reloaded up to proper pressure it cuts that margin in half. Another thing with most rifles the mag hold 3 or 4, the 280 and AI hold 5. The ex5a round may not mean much but it's there.

@@leonhart2452 the only way the 7 mm AI can exceed the 7 mm mag is with higher pressure. The 7 mm mag is already at high pressure so it's on you if you want to increase the 7 mm AI pressure over the recommended numbers. Probably a bad idea for a little bit more velocity.

280 Remington used to be called the 7mm express, a caliber that's been around for a while. It never became popular till they changed the name to 280 rem. Then somebody had to "improve" that! The 280 AI is a great round, derived from the 30-06 case.

I was looking at the 307 280AI. Savage Ultralight 280AI. And the Browning Xbolt 280AI. I wanted a 1@8 26-inch barrel. I went with an Xbolt. A Speed Long Range 280AI. Counting the muzzle brake, it has a 28-inch barrel. I wanted to shoot Hornady ELD X 175 gr and M 180 gr bullets. I am doing load development with ELD bullets. I will try Berger 150 168 and 175 gr bullets to. I topped mine with a Leupold. A VX6 HD 4x24x52mm TMOA reticle scope. I know u reload. That 307 has a 1@9 twist. It will handle the ELD X 175 gr. The Berger bullets u can shoot all the 7mm bullets. I hunted with a 280 Rem for many yrs.

My favorite cartridge. Currently looking for a deal on a doner 700 action to build a new one.

I've always wanted to play with a .22 Jet for some reason. It was pretty cool in it's day. The rounds were also $0.25 each in 1960, so unfortunately they will probably be $25 each now. Might just be a .357 case with a full taper though, I'm not sure.

I'm surprised you haven't gotten a 280AI before. Excited to see 280AI content

Thumbs up here for interest. Always wanted one but just can't justify it no matter how great it is and that's a nice set-up you have there.

Yeah dude. 280 Ackley has been around since at least the early 70s I am pretty sure. and it is AWESOME!!! I call it my daddy's round, ecause I am 47 years old and don't ever remember him not having one. He has a custom rifle built on a Husqvarna action that is absolutely amazing.

Adam , Good choice . I have 280 Remington. And really love it. I bought a used 20 gauge pump today and had it in the field 2 hours after I came home . I didn't get any shots so when I got back to the house.i gave it a oil treatment..I'm taking it out Duck hunting in a few hours. Get out and shoot that rifle.

You mentioned a 6.5 Creedmoor and the 6.5 PRC can’t forget about the 6.5 Grindel and my next rifle in the 6.5 is going to be the 6.5 300 Weatherby

The case neck has a greater bearing length, which goes a long way to improving the accuracy.

Best all around hunting round ever created custom loads can easily be over 3000fps with a wide variety of bullets because of it being a 7mm

Wow, I was going to say .280 Ackley as soon as I saw the cartridge. Nice one mate. I've never had one either but heard about them since about the mid 2000's.

Seen one at an LGS a few years back that had a VX-6 scope mounted on it, wanted it so bad, but had to pass it up because then there was no ammo or reloading supplies available for it.

Not a fan of the twisted fluted barrel. Reminds me of a wire cable.I will take the straight flute any day.

What You will discover is Nosler Loading Data and max speeds accomplished is extremely different than any other manuals that are more in line with reality. I've loaded and taken alot of game with the 7mm Remington Magnum and also the 280 Nosler AI and for anyone to say they can make a 7 mag out of the 280 AI Sammi approved version is seriously disillusioned from my experience with both cartridges. At best the 280 AI is about the same step down from the 7 mag as the 7-08 is to the 280 AI , 280 Nosler AI 7mm Remington Magnum it's not. Beautiful cartridge though and has other benefits besides velocity.

I’m a reloader too brother and I can tell you it’s not as big a difference between the 270 Winchester and the 7 mm Remington magnum as people think that it is.

That is going to be a Sweat Heart of a Rifle. 280 A.I. is what I want for my youngest son. I have hunted with a 280 Remington in a Mauser 98k action she was the very 1st Rifle as an adult I purchased.
