I was a deputy corrections officer for almost 3 years. I actually loved the job. I had few issues with detainees... but I walked out due to other officers. I think mental health testing should be a required component of the hiring process. Some people can not handle that kind of control over others lives. They get off on it and it's so messed up

There are some fascinating studies out there on the topic to suggest that even normal, healthy functioning adults will slowly turn into sociopaths if given near total control over a prisoner. I don't know how effectively prison rehabilitates felons, but it sure seems to corrupt a lot of COs.

@@ericfleming5522 currently a Sergeant. While i have only worked 2 years its frightening how much control we have over peoples lives. When i put the badge and uniform I become an agent of the state that can and will enforce the laws and rules by force if necessary. Imagine telling an old lady who could be your grandmother its time to go to bed and where she can go and what she can wear. Madness. Its made meso cautious how i deal with them because you can seriously screw up someones life by doing stuff like sending people to the hole over petty stuff and destroying their bed area during a search. Worst i saw was guards looking to lock up people they didnt like and screwing up their parole. When i became a supervisor I worked on firm fair and consistent with anyone who worked under me. witch bitch well yeah but they’re already stuck in a building where they can’t do anything, and they’re locked in with other criminals. Why would they add abusive guards to the equation? Also, the guards acting towards the inmates like that won’t help them, it’ll probably just make them worse.
@whoviantrek4 жыл бұрын
I read a study in my college English class that by today's standards in NO WAY would be approved. In essence, they did extensive psyche evals on all the volunteers to find the most mentally-stable, "normal", well-adjusted men 20-30 and made a mock-prison in Stanford University's basement. Half were prison guards, half were inmates. I'm shortening greatly here, but essentially what was found was that once you put someone in a position of power, they can tend to abuse that power. The strip-searching of inmates is demeaning and it's the first step to classing the inmates as helpless and the guards as the ultimate authority. Even the guards who were considered nicer and less willing to abuse the inmates ended up joining in because the abusive guards had all of the say. Keep in mind, these were very "normal" people. Even the psychologist running the study had fully formed into the role of Warden. It's a fascinating read, and all of this happened over a short period of time. If you are really interested, here's a link to a pdf of the study: web.stanford.edu/dept/spec_coll/uarch/exhibits/Narration.pdf If for some reason that doesn't work, you can google "Zimbardo prison experiment pdf" and there are several free resources and summaries.

I wonder if it's a rule to tell the people who buy the drugs after where it was "stashed" before they consume it?
@indigoraslan63184 жыл бұрын
CrystalBRAWL ! Are you an idiot...why would that be a rule and why would you even think that addicts 1. Care that much about other people or 2. Care about hygiene above getting their “fix”, any person without knowledge of this sort of life can use their brain and assume that if a drug dealer said to someone “this came out of someone’s butt” it would deter buyers, so why tf would it be a rule. Gosh I know I’m popping off but really lady?

I did all my prison time without visits. I didnt want my daughter (then 2-3) to see me in there. Plus it was a 8+ hr drive for family. Love both you girls, we wouldve been the three amigos if we had been in the same area!

I’m glad y’all did a shoutout to the good COs. You can absolutely do that job fairly and well without being an ass. I am now a teacher and hope to inspire and offer hope to my students and keep them from going to prison. I liked my job as a CO, but trying to help kids is my passion. There are definitely some trash COs though

When I was in prison There were a few certain prison officers (prison officers are what We call c.o’s in England) who would be telling each other about their Weekend shenanigans!!!! They would boast to each other about their drunken bar fights…. I can remember the Monday Morning when one of them was seriously regretting his actions as I overheard him tell another officer that him and his friend had kicked some fella unconscious outside a bar and he was worried the incident had been caught on Camera (it wasn’t and he got away with it in the end)…. The thing that used to piss Me off about these few young officers was the fact I was serving a 4 and half Year sentence for a bar fight so I couldn’t work out what was so special about them the fact they were doing exactly the same thing I was in prison for but they still looked down on Me and everyone else as scum and a lowlife when they commuted the same crimes as Me….
