There are lots of ways to get your quad back when you crash. But if your battery ejects, you're kind of screwed. Not any more. Hellgate buzzer, ViFly Finder, and FullSpeed Lucky Box Beeper are self-powered LOUD buzzers that you install on your quad. When the battery ejects, they start buzzing and tell you where it's at.
If you need help setting up a Buzzer Mode in Betaflight, here's how:
• Cleanflight / Betaflig...
Another way of finding your quad is to simply arm it and listen for the props thrashing around. But if it's upside down, it might refuse to arm. Here's the fix for that!

I went with Fullspeed Lucky Box mostly because it was the cheapest but I also liked that little menu where it lets you select how long after losing power it arms and how often it beeps. It also has the audible battery level indicator when you connect it back to power which I thought was cool but really isn't all that useful because unless it was sitting in the field for hours or on your shelf for weeks it will always be full and this way I just wake up the entire building if I plug it in at night while working on my quads (also turned off all beeps in BF other than RX_SET and RX_LOST) :) The led is also nice addition if your quad lands in a way that it's visible. Would be great if it had another one on the opposite side so that you could mount it in a way that one led is visible from each side of your quad. Anyway it's good to see competition heat up like this. I never lost a quad but definitely wanna reduce chance of it ever happening and this is a great and a cheap way.

I've got a hellgate buzzer and it is a lifesaver. I broke my xt60 connector on the PDB side in summer and couldnt make the buzzer to stop in the field and in my way back home because I could'nt put power in the FC anymore, until I got back to my work table at home ;-)
@snailfpv

Feldrik you can disarm it by connecting a 5V pad on a buzzer with thw actual buzzer smd unit +pad on its bottom left corner ie with tweezers. Need to add this to the manual though. We omited the button so it wont get pushed by accident by a piece of scraggle or anything else during a crash. Same reason for not having a jst plug so it cant get disconnected easily.

@TechnicallyTom
@TechnicallyTom 4 жыл бұрын
The Vifly’s volume can be annoying close up, but here’s where it can save your quad, especially if you are flying DJI. There is a bug with the air unit where recording on the air unit will intermittently prevent the OSD elements, both DJI and Betaflight from updating correctly. The items that fail to update are for voltage and current. It’s really easy to end up with a low battery without any indication in the OSD. The Vifly will warn you of low voltage and because it is so loud, you will be able to hear the warning further out. This has save me from dumping my quad in the water at least once.

If you have video at this point, it’s very helpful. Disconnect the omni attenna and see if you can get video with your patch. Then, take your patch and shield it with your hands and point the patch antenna around - walk towards the direction with the best signal. Once you’re reasonably close with great video, pull all of your attennas off - repeat. It can get you to within a few feet - GPS module from ublox. I have one, but havent tried on my quads until I build my long range. - Bring a bike. I strap one on my car and it’s amazing. Ride around and look in open grass or good for bandos to park out of the area and bike in. - Ive been trying to get a model together that straps a rxsr or transmitter right onto the battery. It works, but I havent figured it out completely. Therefore your battery would be transmitting it’s own signal and you can use your transmitter as described above **to locate your battery**. Therefore, you’d have a LONG time until you’d loose your rssi signal and buzzer which can help you get close to your quad. To use, switch from the model that you fly with to your model bound to your recovery transmitter. i.imgur.com/QCmwBti.jpg

I put 1/4” x 1/4” or larger pieces of good-quality reflective tape on all sides of my multi-rotor and fixed-wing aircraft. Makes them relatively easy to find after sunset with a spotlight - even in tall grass, brush, trees, etc. The spotlight will light up the reflective tape if/when the light hits it. Works amazingly well. Practice with it before your drone goes missing. I'm also experimenting with $2 Bluetooth ”keyfinders” from Banggood, etc. and free or low-cost Bluetooth transmitter locating apps. Some key finders and apps work better than others. The Bluetooth devices are low power, but they have unique IDs, which facilitates tracking your own device amount other devices. The Bluetooth key finders and apps can help you know when you are within a couple hundred feet of your quad - then use the spotlight.

Yeah, I had 2 of them on my desk while my quad crash-landed into a sunflower-field. Backwards, so the dvr was of no help. After 2 hours, hair full of spiders and t-shirt full of various bugs I found the quad, luckily. The same evening I wired the Vifly (cost less than $5 now, btw). Today, I had 3 smaller mishaps, one ending in cornfield with broken battery leads. Thanks to this, finding the quad was a piece of cake - my daughter found it in seconds. No more flying without it, ever :)

I measured the noise level of the Vifly in my review - it was 10db louder than the Hellgate and it's definitely sounds much louder (Even too loud on my bench 😛). The only drawback, apart the argument that it took some inspiration from the Hellgate is that it's much bigger. Thanks for the informative review (as usual) Joshua.

I just watched 17:23 minutes of buzzers. My motivation? I fly high overhead my and neighbors house. Then the battery flew out when it went behind a tree and my sightline was temporarily blocked for a few seconds. Darn. Lost the quad. Deep in the woods behind the houses across the street. No buzzer. No joy. No find. Will wait till all the leaves and grasses die down. The look again. Sigh. Should have watched this vidio last week. Not this week. Hahaha. Thank you JB!!! Love your stuff.

Drones are autonomous and don't require a pilot. At least that's how I see it. These little buzzers are just what I need then I can keep saying it. Thanks. Great review. And I did learn something. First I got the hellgate buzzer for my "midrange quad and I put it into my "things to test" box. Last friday I lost my quad in the forest, the strap was ripped off and only caused by fortune I found the quad after 2 hours. First thing I did was to hook the hellgate buzzer up in this quad xdNow I ordered 3 more different lipo driven buzzers (clones) because I can (do not want) to afford hellgates in all of my quads.These buzzers are very helpful and not that much bigger than standard buzzers. So they are going to be my standard in future.

Excellent. lol at 11:53. I need to grab a few hellgate buzzers & it is nice to see comparisons of others bc I wasn't even considering anything else. I used my DVR footage & the almost marco-polo method with the directional antenna on my goggles you mentioned earlier in the video to locate my drone 4,000 ft up the side of a mountain & after that immediately installed 2 of the loudest buzzers (not FPV-specific) I could find. When the hellgate buzzer became available I knew I wanted to scoop up a handful bc even as a freestyler with short ranges lately, there is still the threat of getting lost in tall grass, weeds & underbrush as well as an ejected battery. Thanks, JB.

I added a button to my HellGate and it's the best of both worlds. One big issue is if you fry your FC and don't have a way to disarm the buzzer, adding a button to the HellGate (short buzzer + to 5v) you can disarm the buzzer without having power to the buzzer.

13:38 it will never be triggerred for 30sec because it is only triggered for the short duration of a single beep itself. you would need to programm some more complicated stuff like if the beeper is off for less than 1sec between the beeps, it counts as one activation. And if that is true for more than 30sec, it gets louder to full volume.

However, if landing in high grass or maybe a group of trees.... a buzzer probably would help.

The HellGate was NOT the first product like this, Screamy was. Such a great idea, and it was Open Hardware (and firmware) to boot. I backed Screamy on Kickstarter way back in 2014. They cancelled it after Hobbyking agreed to manufacture the device, and I bought a couple from them. I think they went for USD$25 or so. Unfortunately there was a manufacturing fault and the buzzer was really quiet in the first batch of units. The reviews were universally terrible and the product sank and the company seems to have disappeared. Nice to see that their idea lives on, however! My idea is to focus on recovering the BATTERY of the quad. If you can find the battery, you'll probably find the quad. The battery will give days of power if not weeks without some microscopic battery. So I've been messing around with mounting my old r-xsr's and binding a locater model that can find my battery. You only need battery power to the rxsr to bind to it - no FC logic needed. At that point, it's just adding a buzzer by whatever means. Technically, it should be possible to do a transmitter + buzzer combination that you could use your transmitter to locate. Make sense?

Murat TÜREL It more along the lines of easily improving what we have. Nothing 100% retreivable. The whole setup is smaller and easier to mount and deal with than gps, etc. It gives you more range than any beeper. Id like to think that gps would be ideal, but it involves alot more steps, antennas, potential subscriptions, cost and complexity.

I had to shoot a video to proof that they were really dead because they have requested it. They have had very bad QC, i dont know if it improved since because I won't risk buying it again. But the one working really paid for itself after my quad stuck at the crotch of a pine tree over 80' up at night. I located it far from distance by its blue LED beacon. Next morning it was still tiredly chirping. And no, it is not more loud than others.

Little known fact about the analogue output of Fat Shark goggles when you're playing back DVR footage - it only outputs NTSC, even when you're playing back PAL 25fps footage. I did lose my quad in a row of dense trees. This would have been nice to have. It was on my wish list. New quad had it before the camera. Generic Hellgate buzzer for added insurance. I want at least another 1,000 or so crashes before I lose another drone. But, building them is fun!

Hi JB! My name is Taufek from Malaysia. Been watching your videos for quite some time and today, after watching this video...yeah...i've learned something new for retrieving a lost quad. I have built four quads so far and have lost three of them during some crashes. Since i'm left with just one quad, i've placed an order for the buzzer and hopefully i won't lose it this time around if i crash again. It's so heartbreaking to lose the quads one after another. I wouldn't understand the part of the dvr you mentioned in the video as I do not own a goggle because I fly LOS only. It's so disheartening to lose your precious quad especially for someone who is on a shoe string budget like me. My quads were the realacc x210 frame kit by banggood as they were the best i could afford. No camera, no vtr and no goggle as this frame kit flies beautifully, Los only. BTW, this is the first day of our festives season in Malaysia and most countries of the muslim world. Come to my house and I'll treat you with the best meals like lemang, ketupat and rendang... I've enjoyed most of your videos and will take the necessary steps to install a buzzer as you recommended in this video. Thank you so much bro for sharing this info. Taufek Shariff

(1) Hell gate now has a v2. Substantially bigger, a lot louder. (2) Hell gate is simple and direct. Im sure id get use to the others, but i like simple and direct. (3) Ive never lost my lipo on my QAV-R. I lose my lipo ALL THE TIME on my QAV-X.

I didn’t realise you could set the fat sharks to auto record all the time! That would have helped me that day when I lost a quad for 3 days 😛 I like the buzzers. The hellgate seems good but I see a problem.. if you disarm it by plugging in power, what happens if your quad has damage to its power system? What happens if it got wet and you don’t want to plug it in? The vfly is super loud which is good, I guess I would have to disable all beeps in betaflight though if I wanted to use it without getting deafened

I dont like the Hellgate Buzzer with the replug disarming. I would rather not have to reconect it with another 6S spark after every flight. A local guy recently lost his battery at a crash in the field and we could not stopp his hellgate buzzer during the whole search with a lot of people as we brougt no battery. Slightly annoying!

I lost my quad once (found it the next day) with the broken arm and chopped wire. Places I fly are quite difficult for searching the lost quad so for me this item is vital. Already have the loud one. More weight but even with the battery attached finding the fallen quad is much esier cause of loud buzzer

Last time i nearly lost my kwad. My video antanna was bad placed and i had total lost of video from one second to the other. I had just a draft guess where it could be grounded. Bad timing also for my loc8tor (drone finder) because my loc8tor battery was dead... The grass was more then half a meter high - nearly impossible to find anything in there. So lets activate beeper i thought, but the only thing i could hear where birds, and grasshopers, but no beep from my drone. Yea my remote beeped too because i also lost receiver signal more or less. After running around searching where it cold be i rememberd to use RSSI signal to bring me back to my drone. Due to a broken antenna on my receiver (lucky me) i had nearly no signal on my remote...just if i putted it over my head then i got a small signal...turning around to find where the best RSSI signal comes from and walked this way. Checked signal streangth all the time, if it goes up walk further, if it goes down rescan area where best signal comes from. Walk along that path and finally between bird an grasshopper sound i could hear a tiny beeep beeep from my drone....i followed it and got my drone back! WOW i was happy. RSSI is for me now one very very important stuff - saved me alot of money!

Literally hooked up a vifly buzzer to a jb v2 fc today. Could have done with this vid 5 hours ago man! I have to say I don't find the vifly that loud outside, it's a proper PIA when you are working on something indoors but outside I could actually do with it being louder.

Cool. Thats good to know. I have been tempted. Especially as its a case of "I told you to get one" with the boys I fly with. I am wondering about sticking it in a 2,5inch for that time you land it in a tree. Hard to find them when they drop. Is it worth the extra weight and space?

bought one of these, seemed to work fine hooked up to an ESC with a battery, nothing else. I then hooked it up to my F765 - it then displayed the equivalent of 'servo chatter', beeping randomly and loudly. I returned it to amazon.

I’m probably going to get heckled for this but I usually get out my RF explore with beam antenna and walk right over to it and pick it up. The beepers are great if you eject a battery but if you’re flying with 10-20 other people the RF explorer is the only way to go find the quad in the woods or you wait until dark and it gets quite and then you can hear the beeper. On other note pay attention to the solder iron temp I bought some HellGates when they first came out, I didn’t check my temp and lifted a pad ..
