As irritated as you got with waiting in long lines in such hot weather, you got the decades-old Romanian-Moldovan train travel. To be able to ride a Soviet era train- along with all the discomforts- is a truly wonderfully authentic experience. Accept and even embrace discomfort, because you are getting something real along with the majority of the locals. I can say this, because most of my traveling through the Middle East and Eastern Europe has been truly authentic and uncomfortable by Western standards.
@LordDavid042 жыл бұрын
The changing of wheels is a change in railway gauge. Romania uses the international standard (1435mm), whilst Moldova uses a bigger different gauge, the same gauge used in Russia (1520mm). Blame the Russian empire for that. They intentionally chose a different gauge to not be compatible with the rest of Europe, so that in the event of invasion, European trains could not easily be used in the Russian network.
@captainbadger10132 жыл бұрын
The UK had both broad and narrow gauge for many years. The two most prominent railway builders in the UK were Brunel and Stephenson. Brunel believed his 7ft 1/4 in broad gauge rail would mean faster and smoother journeys, proven by its success on his Great Western Railway linking Paddingon with South West England. George Stephenson favoured 4ft 8 1/2 in between the rails, based on the needs of the horses and carts for which the early railways had been built. For many years the UK had 3 rails so both gauges could work on the same line and the last broad gauge was removed in 1892.

Johnny I think for international tickets there are different standards and different types of electronic readers depending on the country you are travelling through so that’s why I don’t think you can get a Romanian electronic ticket, it won’t work in all countries, especially in Moldova which is outside the EU. For travelling inside Romania I can assure you you can get a qr code ticket on your phone, you don’t need to wait inline or print anything. Never had an incident fortunately. - Yes, you have to pay extra for every packet of condiments not only Mcdonalds, but on other Fast food chains as well. :D - We usually just take a screenshot of the ticket once we book the ticket from CFR Calatori, and that's what we show to the Train Conductor during inspection. We never had to fall in line at the ticket stands. This was between Mar 2019 to Mar 2021 so not sure if anything has changed. 25 years ago, I was at a train station in Tianjin China to buy a ticket. I was horrified to see at least 500 people (maybe 1,000) packed inside the large hall trying to get to the counter. There was no line. After about 30 minutes of pushing and shoving, I got to the front of the counter only to be told that foreigners have to go upstairs. When I went upstirs, there was an empty waiting room with nice sofas for foreigners only. Later I learned that I paid four time the price for the locals. I had horrible experiences in Russia in the early 90’s as well. People who lived in communist countries are trained to wait. They don’t seem to value time very much.

They have different rail tracks and virtual no IT infrastructure connected to Romania due to: them being invaded by Russians for almost a century. Us being in EU, they not. They require printed tickets (the only ones so it is a special service just for them (an a single office). Having huge numbers in lines is due to touristic season (is summer, everybody travels, not all know how to buy e tickets). Hi Johnny....great video! As a train enthusiast, I really appreciate these kinds of images you show us. As for the wheels, the entire piece of equipment which includes the wheels, axles and frame around them are called "Trucks" in America. In Europe, it's called a "Bogie." Russia's railway gauge is 5'-0", while much of Europe, including the US is 4'-8 1/2". And the latter is generally considered a world-wide standard. There are exceptions, of course, but that is why they needed to change the trucks from the standard gauge to the wider Russian gauge as it arrived at the border. You know, people in the USA gripe and complain about Amtrak, but...it still seems a lot better than this. Keep up the great work!!

Man got histerical with the lady at the front desk, nobody said the system is perfect but he was expecting to get his ticket scanned on train while travelling outside the country on a Moldovan train. There are check-ups to be done before travelling to another country so yes it's not as easy as that. He wasted an hour waiting on cues because he didn't plan it right and checked before crying like a little girl.

@@jyee2217 It isn't a matter of waiting to have everything researched. it is a matter of taking a few minutes to find out how to most easily take the next step. He complains constantly about problems, and the time he wastes, issues that would rarely arise if he to 5 or 10 mins to look up how to accomplish the task at han i.e. getting a SIM card, efficiently buying a train ticket etc..

I was in the same train station 4 days ago and yes you can get an electronic ticket on your phone I've done that for several years here.

It is so hot in the ticket lines because they blow the hot air out over the lines from the air conditioning in the office. Click here on 6:17 and see the AC exhaust condenser in the background.

For Americans, the most important thing to know about Europe is that in Paris, they call a Big Mac "Le Big Mac". This video is another confirmation, how "Pulp Fiction" nailed it.

That's right. You needed to pick up the ticket because it was issued by Calea Ferată Moldova not by Căile Ferate Române. Normally we can directly use e-tickets for CFR services.

Seems to me that in a hot and small cabin like this, one would just intuitively put on a shirt for the sake of your bunk mate. Especially when you were asked to do so by the conductor. Anyway, just seems like common courtesy.

I used to react as Johnny did in the ticket line, getting frustrated and shiite, but I stopped giving a darn more than a year ago and life has improved so much, you have no idea. When I go to a place like that, I come prepared now. I know I won't get exactly what I want at the time I want it. I expect confusion, poor customer service, and wasting my time every time now. Believe me, there's nothing you can do to change "the system". The "system" has been there for a long time, especially when you go to foreign countries. Just take the opportunity to learn something new and enjoy what's around you. I noticed many beautiful women in line.

Rail gauge (Ecartament feroviar) - In rail transport, track gauge is the distance between the two rails of a railway track. All vehicles on a rail network must have wheelsets that are compatible with the track gauge. Since many different track gauges exist worldwide, gauge differences often present a barrier to wider operation on railway networks. Wikipedia

Romanian inter city trains are in my experience, good. It is when you travel on the regional trains that the fun starts. These regional ones are 2 or 3 carriages and on some, a door can suddenly fly open. This happened several times on a train ex Brasov!
@shakostarsun2 жыл бұрын
Also what happened to us is we wanted only first class tickets for the train but it was sold out the day we went so we had to wait two days for the next train. Which was fine because we used those two days to go see Dracula's Castle, Bran Castle.

Johnny …. Your videos are great thank you for them….. there was or is a McDonald’s in Kiev that I would visit on my three trips there.. I have never had better chicken wraps any where else in the world.. now for the two ladies at the ticket windows in the Romanian train station …. I was worried for you….. my fear was they will climb through this window and spank his bottom.

C'mon, Hohnny -- Are you a tourist or a traveler? No need to harp on something you can't change...not a good look.Remember, you're on Romania...Nice to see that Romania's using paper drinking straws -- I've cleaned up far too many plastics on Kauai Beaches. PULEEZE return to the laid-back Cali attitude -- it's so much more enjoyable to watch you in that space.

Americans really don’t help themselves do they? Anyway, the reason for the different gauges isn’t “in case Russia attacks”. It was a tactic employed by the soviet union so invading countries found it difficult to invade. Hence why so many former soviet countries have different gauges.

I just got back from Chisinau traveling on this train, I also travelled out from Bucharest on this train as well. The International ticket office was quite good to me. However I found the female Ticket Conductor to be incredibly rude, constantly shouting at us haha but treating the local passengers on the cart like Saints even though we were polite and had a guy translating for us. She must hate foreigners or had really bad experiences with them in the past. That being said I really enjoyed the journey meeting people all over the world on the drinks cart was awesome.

Johnny FD Well the first part of this GREAT video, I thought should be renamed “ Johnny’s VERY BAD DAY “ ❣️ I was relieved to see you on your way . Wonderful that you , and so many others made acquaintanceships , to ward off bad gloom from a long , hot and sweatie journey ! A bunch of beers and new wheels later , and you made it to somewhere . I think I lost track , thinking you were still Romania . Anyway, yes, Mr Bald would have gone on and on about the window coverings , the Babushka sightings , etc . Can’t wait for part 2. Your channel is doing great ! Thank you for taking us along !
