Once an underutilised narrow porch situated between two overlapping villas, Urban Cabin, designed by Italian architect Francesa Perani, is now a multi purpose space that acts as studio, retreat and guest house. The living area includes a 7m long bench for seating and storage, while also unfolding into two single beds and allowing the remainder of the home to be split into a generous bathroom. Drawing inspiration from Persian design, the cabin celebrates colour and texture with indigo blue accents, and recycled OSB timber throughout; lending a striking look to this multifunctional home.

Funny I stopped the video to see what other people were commenting, when I got to the part where the architect was showing the cheap looking particle board, I thought maybe I in my thoughts was being too critical. But no, I think the place is cheap, has little design, but is useful for outside storage. Unappealing in comfort and quality.

This one doesn’t feel very livable/comfortable. Even for guests or temporary accommodation a soft or supportive place to sit and visit would be nice. Hard seating like this is not inviting. Like others I’m not a fan of the OSB. Maybe as an accent but for me this is too much. I love the concept of the deep window seats but a padded seat would make it place people want to be. And personally I prefer a separated area to sleep even if it’s tiny. I might have tried to make a sleeping alcove somehow.

I agree with the shower part but when it comes to the beds it's more of a cultural thing. It's pretty normal in many European countries (like Italy, as we see in this video) to have single beds that are only 80 or 90cm wide (31 or 35 inches). If you grow up used to that bed size, you don't really think it's small, just normal.

Very clever use of space in such a narrow place. The OSB on its own throughout the whole space is just way too much for me. I would have broken it up with maybe plastering (or even just painting) the back wall running the length of the space. I would also bring in some different colours and textures by adding pillows or long seat cushions to the window seats. I like the blue in the bathroom and the contrasting white, but that window in the shower should really be frosted since the screen outside won’t give much privacy.

@@Raky2427 Usually a bed has springs or a sletted frame so that the matress doesn't rest on a solid surface. These matresses also look thin. All together the bed will likely be very uncomfortable. Of course it might be okay for a few nights, but any more will give you back pains and it's a sorry excuse for a bed in relation to this (over)designed space and a literal villa. I would compare it to having your guests sleep on a half-inflated air matress in a tent on the pavement while you sleep in a queen sized bed inside.

All things considered I think the designer did an amazing job fitting so much in, while offering an aesthetically pleasing design. Many commenters are forgetting this space was previously just an open porch, used for semi-open bike storage in someone's yard. It's only 289sqft, and most of that area is made up of length and low ceiling height. The cabin is only 16ft x 32 ft. It is not meant to be a full-time living space, and use is instead a retreat/guest house for the owners who live in a house where the cabin is located. With all the necessary custom work due to the narrow size, it would've been cost prohibitive to apply traditional finishes to the entire interior. The touch of color warms up the space and creates visual interest without overwhelming such an open and tiny floorpan. People forget that not everyone can afford the fancy interiors seen everywhere. Anything can be made incredible by a designer who is given a carte blanche budget. Please factor in the cost of materials, construction, permitting, and design services and fairly weigh your conclusions. Why can't we appreciate an aesthetic that's on the simply side, made with non-toxic materials? Kudos to the this designer who demonstrated her creativity on this project. I think this cabin was very well designed, considering all the parameters the designer was working with.

We've added grass to the roof so that it's green. We've installed this scrap piece of metal to provide the sense of privacy but have added holes so those who want to can see through it. This metallic fence warms you by reminding you that you're not just in a wooden box, but also a metal cage. The blue symbolizes sadness which reduces your bathroom time and thus saves water for fishes. The bench becomes a single bed and you will be forever alone.

Those handles are huge and prevent the doors from opening beside each other fully. ??? In a small space that is silly. That window in the shower has no privacy option. I wouldn't want to use the shower, the toilet or get dressed in this "home." I hit "like" because that is how I keep track of whether I have watched an episode or not, but this plan was poorly executed.

A little too much of an academic exercise. The irregular lines and shapes might be the architect's thing but it doesn't appeal to me. Also to me this space reads as stuffy in the summer and draughty in the winter. Ventilation is so impt in small spaces. This is a pass from me.

I don't like this design much. And the discussion was much more pretentious than usual. I typically enjoy listening to the designers talk in this series since they need to solve a lot of problems to maintaining an esthetic under tight space and environmental constraints. This one set off my BS detector a dozen times.

Sleeping space looks uncomfortable to say the least. The table could be replaced with a sliding one of some sort to give more room for the sleeping accommodation. The bathroom needs more privacy. The kitchen space looks so tiny. The way I see it, this is a space for lean people only. And small people.

Sometimes when I watch this channel, some styles aren’t my cup of tea but can appreciate them nonetheless. However, this is probably my least favourite out of all the NTS videos. This wood, at least for me, is hideous and feels ‘unfinished’ - it makes me think of some hostel for 20 year olds in which the owners wanted it to look kinda trendy but were on a budget. And that kitchen area is terrible, especially with that crappy 2 ring portable hob that probably cost about 30 euros, could they not have built something into the worktop to make it look slicker? The bathroom is definitely the best element. It’s funny this week I watched probably one of the coolest NTS places (Grand Hotel building in the Melbourne CBD) and one of the worst NTS ones (this one)!

Doesn't match the house or the culture. Such odd choices that aren't practical or aesthetic. Seems more like the architect wanted to do something for their own portfolio rather than really see to the client's needs.

To me this really reads as 'rentable short-term office space' or youth centre. The boards on the walls and floor make it seem unfinished, and the overall furnishing reminds me of a Portakabin. It's the kind of room you'd have office meetings in while renovations are being done. Basically, this would serve really well as a commercial, office or community space but maybe not as a living situation.

I know this tiny space is for niche purpose but I love how she contrast the earthy look of the wood panel with that blue, the result looks surprisingly cool and exquisite. Easily Airbnb worthy. Definitely one of the more standout deco I've seen for a while in this channel, thanks to the designer for thinking outside the box (the minimalist trend). Me likey :D P.s: I just read comments and see some seems don't like it and I can understand why. This type of deco definitely not practical for real home purpose but to me this design is cool for its purpose. As this is not the main residence space, it's for the temporary guests staying. My 2 cents ...

thanks a lot for your kind comment. I do understand other comments too and I guess when I designed the cabin I did try to experiment a bit in order to give a comfortable space to the clients while investigating textures combinations. It is a guest house and the materials are pre-treated and durable many are mistaking OSB as the same one they probably have seen on building sites ;-) .

Aside from the blue borrowed from "mosque" ( and then also used in the bathroom), the designers completely missed out on the Persian aesthetic ( and no that mesh cascade on the outside is not reminiscent of Persian arches). The choice of material is horrifying even to think. Recycling is nice but really? those handles? This is a horrifying structure. How about a full white space? How about entering from the center with the bedroom ( two single beds with space in between) on the right side, and the kitchen/living and bathroom on the other side? How about using the rich tapestry of Persian aesthetic in fabrics, and art (perhaps)? how about using plants/wines to add privacy on the outside? So much more could have been done!

Oh my gosh this is horribly ugly. Amazing space but the OSB is terrible. If you've ever worked in construction or did any manual labor involving OSB you would know how unpleasant it is to touch and how splinter-prone it is. Even if it is coated with something it still has that aura of unpleasantry.

I find the wall coverings, light and warm, nicely contrasted with that exceptional blue. Love this space. Intelligent use of an awkward, narrow area into multifunctional living for short stays and studio work. The mesh offers privacy from outsiders looking in (as evidenced by the camera footage) whist providing good views and light for guests. I would love to stay here!

Ok, maybe I don't know much about Persian culture and that's why it's so hard to understand the design, but one thing is for sure: there's no celebration of colors in such a monochromatic choice, no privacy in that bathroom and also it's not that multifunctional at all. I mean, the kitchen is almost figurative. I've seen smaller spaces look like much bigger than this one...

I'd be pissed off if the walls were furnished with shitty plywood. That's the cheapest type of wood held together with glue. Sure it might be "strong" but it's still shredded wood bonded with glue... it looks remarkably bad. This is literally the basis of the stereotype that "artists" are pretentious. Given the exorbitantly cheap materials, they probably still price gouged the clients for the sake of "style and unique vision"
