It looks to me like their stalking is mostly playful. They know he's not food, but the hunting instinct is triggered when he turns his back, so they want to go for him. I suspect that if they really tried to catch him, they would be a lot more forceful (and also try to be sneakier). Still, it's a powerful display and a good reminder that big cats don't make good pets.

What people don't understand is it's pure instinct. Even if a cat sees you as a friend, it will be compelled to sneak up on you if your back is turned. They do this in both hunting and play. The problem is that big cats are powerful enough to seriously hurt you just from playing. Even domestic cats can hurt you if they are not taught to play with sheathed claws and not bite. We have thinner, more fragile skin, and they don't instantly understand that we can be hurt easily by them through play.

Last day I worked in a forest near creek. I had to fix smth small(wire) quickly as I there was cattle nearby. Also, the neighbouring farm has a guard-dog which is set loose time to time to piss off strangers. It ads up and I had a chance of experiencing "blunt quick look around" after 20 minutes of concentrated work in a environment that is surrounded with MOVING NATURAL GREEN COLOUR.

Out in the wilds they would hide in tall grass and their camouflage might do the trick but on a flat surface their instincts don't do them a favor. Housecats got the same instinct, you don't have to take a risk beeing mauled by them though.

Actually, that's exactly how they think. These animals are highly dependent on their ability to remain unseen by their prey until it's too late. They trust their natural camouflage and hence think that by standing still you will not see them. As soon as you turn and face them, they hesitate and stop again in hopes that you don't spot them. My mother, who worked with big cats when I was younger, drilled this into me as a kid every day. Never turn your back on them, never take your eyes off them, and never run from them. Unfortunately, people seem to think that just because they're in zoos, or "domesticated" that means they're harmless.

This is a common hunting technique used by big cats actually. Many natives of Asia and Africa where many of these species are found, often wear masks with faces on them behind their heads to give the illusion of their backs NOT being turned. The reason big cats wait for your back to be turned is because they have a clearer shot to your neck to kill you quickly. Not only can they crush the windpipe but they also severe the brain cord.

I've visited Big Cat Rescue this past year. It was incredibly informative. One thing I cannot applaud you guys enough for is showing that these animals are still predators and should not be treated like pets. I see too many accounts on Instagram that portray big cats as house cats! It's ridiculous and only fuels the exotic pet trade. Thank you Big Cat Rescue!

Never underestimate wild animals honey. There are multiple cases of wild animals attacking their owner or people like you that think they are all cute and friendly. Look up what happened behind the scenes in the movie "Roar" (1981). They are predetors and it is their nature.

Must be from some urban area is you're afraid of big cats. Humans are top of the food chain, don't bother the animal and 9 times out of 10 they won't bother you. Don't fear them, if they know you're scared then you're prey. To walk among predators you must be on their level. Confident, and not to be tested. Show an animal you don't fear them, and you have nothing to worry about. And if you're going to go on some rant about "what if the hungry" then maybe you should going to their homes and bothering them. Also, big cats are the same as normal cats, and if you've raised them since they they were little they will view you as their parents, but you have to know to properly care for said animal and if you're going to have a big cat you should live in an area they are native to. Honestly I'd love to own an Ocelot, but I don't live where they are native. Even more worse is they are an endangered, so It'd be wrong to try and own one when they need to populate. In short big cats can be pets but they take extreme amounts of care and specific requirements, and that most people shouldn't own one.

Normal household cats have been domesticated over CENTURIES to be able to interact with humans. Wild predatory animals like big cats will always have it in their nature to hunt and eat other animals, including humans, no matter if you have been raising them since their birth. There has been so many instances of exotic pets attacking and killing their owners out of the blue, even if they were treated well and raised from a young age. "Show an animal you don't fear them, and you have nothing to worry about"- Try confidently standing up to a Silverback gorilla in its wild habitat and see what happens. The only way you can survive an encounter with a wild animal such as a gorilla is to be slow and submissive. Once, you give off the impression of not being afraid of them, wild animals will perceive you as a threat and will not hesitate to attack and kill you.
