Hi Danny I actually planted my miltonia sunset orchid in orchidpon about a week before you posted your last video about this, I have it in a lechuza Deltini pot and It actually seems really happy in the substrate and is growing well, I do make sure I flush it out every week though just in case. After watching your videos though there is no way I’m putting my phalaenopsis orchids in the orchidpon. Thanks so much for your videos they are so helpful and have really inspired me to grow orchids.

If you still have extra Orchidpon, can you try it on Hoyas? Just curious if it would be the same with hoyas in regular pon. 🤭🙃 And THAT is what we call a tray! Love it!

Most of my orchids (mostly Phals) are either in Pon or Orchipon for almost a year now and they are all doing good. At the moment I would say I had more problems with the standard substrate or Seramis which I also tried.

One phaneleopsis since 2018 in this pot with PON… it looks good, flowers, never had a burn. ☺️ the rest is in leca since the same year, also no problems

This is exactly what I use for Hoyas. Works far better than any other substrate long term.

In the second video you mentioned that you would be open to trying a version of Pon without Fertilizer, there actually is such a version now. It's called Basicpon (also from Lechuza) and only contains the substrate materials. Would be interesting to hear your take on that in the future. Thanks for sharing your experiences for the rest of us to learn from!

I’ve never heard of Pon. but if I ever see it I’ll know it’s not for orchids. Bark works well for me. Thanks for all the information. And. You are right, if you don’t have a lot of room, those pots are too big. I have a small house and I couldn’t use them. I hope your family and friends are safe.

This video came a bit late Dani, I have tried these before and also for me a big no. The roots of my orchids completely mushed out (I've tried on phalaenopsis, and miltoniopsis; lost the phalaenopsis but managed to recover the miltoniopsis after changing the orchid pon to bark and spaghnum moss). Anyway, I appreciate the video as I thought I did something wrong and couldn't find any reviews or information out there about this setup 😀

As you say, I have almost all my multihybrids in pon or in similar mineral substrate for succulents and grow them very successful. Best substrate ever, independent on the pot used. But I would, too, never ever put a phalaenopsis into it. 🤷♀️

Thank you for another awesome video and testing products for us viewers. Needless to say I wont try it on my healthy orchid anytime soon. Once you find your media of choice that works in your conditions it's hard to be tempted to try something new. Your birds are too funny, they feature well in every vids haha thanks for the laugh! Also regarding the redding of the phals leaves, I have noticed the ones with purple/reddish flowers the leaves are changing colours, could this be related? I don't have enough orchids to support the theory but all of the ones I have that have red/purple colour on the flowers tend to have red pigments on their leaves.

You can soak the Orchidpon and then measure the ppm with a TDS meter. I guess it would be very high.

Hello again! I have not yet had an opportunity to investigate this specific issue with orchids, it is documented and I believe scientifically understood in other flowering plants that another reason for purpling or reddening in plant leaves *may* be poor P (phosphorus) utilization or uptake. My own experience has been with leaf petioles turning purple in conjunction with poor fruit set, and the problem was related to both soil temperature and pH combining to make what P was present essentially unavailable for the plants to take up and utilize. Small market crop of tomatoes and the things you learn through the county ag extension (a service in many counties or parishes in the US). Since many orchids, especially monopodial like the Phaleonopsis spp and hybrids, don't actually h *have* petioles, I find myself wondering if the purpling and other problems you observed with the Orchidpon might be associated with phosphorous utilization issues.
@MissOrchidGirl2 жыл бұрын
Definitely not 😁 ps: a few years ago there was the same theory but with magnesium, which also I don't think it's the case. As far as my experience goes, it's solely related to light 😊

I am so inspired! Do you have any advice for growing orchids indoors in Alaska?
@MissOrchidGirl2 жыл бұрын
Hi, I think grow lights will be a great investment! If you're struggling with maintaining higher temperatures, consider a grow cabinet, such as the Ikea ones! The lights inside will maintain a warmer temperature, I find it better than heated mats. If low humidity, focus on orchids that don't get affected by that, I have quite a few videos on that. Guess that's about it off the top of my head, hope it helps! 😊

Buna Dani. 🤗

Anyone who expects you to use perfectly healthy orchids for all your experiments obviously does not experiment with their own babies. I had the same thoughts and conclusions as you came to with those pots. They are nice, but not really useful for larger collections. @taraldstein71652 жыл бұрын
Definitively not true. Hydroponic can work, but the media needs to be right. I have jewel orchids and some hoyas thriving in leca and pumice. I'm working on getting the media right for my other orchids and believe it can be done. There are several good examples of how people get it to work.

@@MissOrchidGirl the only problem i have seen with hoya is the roots get too long and when they start touching the water thats the problem. I Think i'm doing something wrong
@SuperUsername147 Жыл бұрын
@@victoredwardo9485 nothing wrong with roots growing into the reservoir. My Hoyas love leca and the roots grow directly into the reservoir. I just leave them there. They love pon too but I use pon the same way you would use soil without a reservoir. I only give pon a reservoir if there’s a layer of leca on the bottom, and I haven’t actually tried that with any Hoya (just anthurium, philos, and epipremnum). Otherwise it stays too wet (note that self watering pots are different and suck up water more slowly than if you had a reservoir where the entire bottom of substrate is submerged in water like you would with leca).
