this video had me in tears . otters are my favourite animal , and seeing them in this state makes me so so so depressed . they are not meant to be kept in cages AT ALL . they are high energy animals that need space to run and play and swim and just chill out and all that stuff . i'm still crying as i type this lol . i wish i had money so i could help all the otters in the world have a safe comfortable place to live .

My dad and I went to an owl cafe in Akihabara when we visited Japan; the owls seemed very sleepy, and it definitely wasn't the most ideal place, but the staff was very polite and did a good job making sure the owls were handled correctly!! My little buddy left talon marks on my arm lol, we were only allowed to lightly touch their foreheads and they made sure everyone was very quiet so as not to disturb the owls too much. Definitely not the BEST condition for them, being kept indoors and bothered all day, but they seemed pretty content overall and I was happy to see the staff actually caring to keep guests from bothering the animals too much! I enjoyed the experience, but in hindsight probably wouldn't go back just to make a statement about keeping the animals in the most ideal conditions haha

I definitely think some places are better than others and from the videos I’ve seen, some of them don’t seem too bad! Hopefully they are all treated well! I just think there should be a higher standard in Japan for exotic pets care. Hopefully someday 🥺🤞 I’m glad to hear the owl café was a pleasant experience! ☺️ 🦉

I’m so glad you made a video of this. I went to school in Japan for 5 years and from what I’ve seen I believe animal ethics are very poorly thought of. Here are some instances I’ve encountered: -Before visiting a Mini Pig cafe, I emailed the company to see what they do with their pigs when they get too big and they sent me a “detailed” email on how they are guaranteed good homes after a strict background check. When I asked if there was any proof of all the claims they had made and if it is true I suggested they write that on their website for transparency and they never answered me back. -My aunt’s friend spent an obscene amount of money on a purebred dog who got sick and had to dish out even more money to make the dog better. When I asked why she didn’t get a rescue dog (which are barely a fraction of what she spent on her purebred) in the first place she said that it’s a common belief that “Good quality stuff comes from the more money you spend”. Well Miss mam ur expensive fluffy Pomeranian is now sick and bald???? -When I went to a children’s museum, there was a small bland tank full of baby sturgeon. I noticed one of the sturgeon went belly up and was not moving, so I called over staff to let them know and they said thank you for informing us but that was it. I waited at the tank for ten minutes to call them again and asked if anything was going to be done and they just apologized and left. I took one lap around the museum which was a good hour and a half and before leaving decided to check on the sturgeon tank again. Nothing changed. I was pissed so I asked the staff one more time if there was a vet or something they can do about this and idk if they made this up to shut me up but they said they called the person in charge of the tank and they won’t be here till next week. There was nothing else so I left and I have no clue what happened afterwards. -When my aunt worked at the puppy display place similar to the one you went to, she was under strict orders to not touch any sick puppies and leave them to die so they didn’t have to pay for medical bills. This was probably about 30 or so years ago though so she’s not sure what the conditions are like now but I’m not very hopeful. On a side note, every time I went to those stores even as a child during my summer breaks there would only always be purebred pups priced lowest around ¥100,000 ($1,000). I don’t think I’ve seen a pup at those stores that are even a year old. It’s always only a few month old purebred pup. Japan doesn’t have much pet friendly housing and it’s not like you see many people walking around with pets on the streets either so I don’t think these dogs are being sold like hotcakes. That being said I’ve always been meaning to ask what happens to a pup that gets too old but i always avoided going to these shops because it was so heartbreaking. -As a marine bio enthusiast, I am torn on going to aquariums because I genuinely could stare at marine life for hours on end but the quality of the exhibits many of the time are just dingy, cramped and awful. There was one where the sea lions water bath barely fit its body and it was a hot day so it kept rotating in small fast circles to splash water on itself. There was a polar bear exhibit where the bear looked like it may have been growing some algae in its fur and I’m no expert so I could be wrong but it was small and looked like those emaciated polar bears in global warming documentaries. Anyway I have PLENTY more stories that irk me when it comes to animal ethics in Japan. Thank you again for your fantastic content. I just stumbled upon you and Iove how knowledgeable and compassionate you are. Looking forward to your future vids!

The Japanese are a bit of an odd group: I don’t always agree with how they do things, like in this place. I do not like how they’ve kept these animals in tiny cages the majority of the time. But despite their troubling oddities. They have a beautiful ancient culture and it’s my favorite place to visit. I’d never live there thought.

I suggest a bio park is it is a zoo they keep them in a natural habitat is interactions. They have very big enclosures, the bed problem you don’t look skinny they are in really good shape. They’re all rescues and there’s also two indoor areas one is full of reptiles birds dogs, cats insects you can observe them and there’s also a butterfly garden. There’s also bats amazing creatures.

Very refreshing to see a big youtuber with your stance on keeping exotic pets. Usually people apply your logic to every exotic animal except mammals. I own coatimundi etc. so it’s nice to see someone with the same stance as me. The majority of animal cafes in Japan are pretty poor in terms of animal welfare, which makes sense since they’re small shops that will incentivize profit at the end of the day. I’m personally not at all interested in supporting them, I think I’d get more enjoyment visiting an owl or something elsewhere in Japan- lots of zoos there let you interact with the animals unlike in the USA. There are lovely zoos with semi-free roaming coatimundi and small primates for example that are really interesting. They have ropes and stuff going throughout the zoo the animals traverse to leave or enter their exhibit. If you’re looking for more animal content in Japan, there’s a small pet store called Ferret Marin that sells some exotic mammals Iike giant red flying squirrels. And I’ve seen pet stores there selling seals, which is uh… Interesting, to say the least.

Not a fan of if any type of animals being caged for most of their life, i been to jail I know what it dose to one so I always can relate when I see shit like this.. Regaurdless if they are being well taken care of at the end of the day they are wild animals not pets and even if they were pets that’s not the way to have them living, just my opinion.

Being in a cage is totally different than being in a large, naturalistic enclosure that replicates their natural environment! Every species is different, but otters NEED tons of space and enrichment. I hope they get their new facility built soon so they can get out of those tiny cages! 🥲🦦
