You skipped from sprinkling on top of tray to trimming. Did you cover seeds and wet soil? Then at 4:11 you spoke about another round of fertilizer but I didn’t see when you added first round. Growing seedlings and keeping alive long enough to plant out is very difficult for me. Mine get leggy tangled and few survive. When do you fertilize first time and do you bottom water with fertilizer when still in tray? Hope someone can answer all 3 points

I finally had my first successful onion crop last year for our own consumption. The main problem I've had the last couple of years though is the curing and storage. I lost more than I'd like to rot in storage. This year was much better though. I think the problem is I don't have a cold place to put them other than our basement which stays around 65 or so.

I have the same issue. I am planning to dehydrate a lot next year as that seems to be the best option. I like pickled onions as well but not in soups and stews.

Good Video, We are relatively in the same growing region as you. What variety of Yellow Long storage onion have you had the best success with? I have never planted or even used Shallots.

Go talon for yellow storage and conservor (both organic seeds) they will crush it for more northern climates

Hi from Germany and you encouraged me to seed my onions now. Please don't talk about inches only but give measurements in centimeters too. Stuttgarter Riesen are my onion variety.

You can't use google to convert inches to cm on your own? Or simpler, an inch is about 2.5 cm.

one centimeter equals .39 inch so just under 1/2 '', so just a little over double which is close enough in the garden. Six inches is 15 centimeters but 12 is would be fine for spacing as no one would get out the tape measure in the garden. Here in Indiana we plant out around 5,0000 Candy onions each spring and I've found that planting them in individual cells of 72 to 162 count trays gives the onions less shock not having their roots disturbed when transplanted. To prune leaves in the flats I use a battery powered hedge trimmer to speed the process. We get $ 1.00 for a medium onion and $1.50 for large ones so it's worth the extra space starting them in individual flats.

What variety of red and what variety of yellow do you grow? I'm not looking to have anyone else answer this.
