For people on a tight budget these would fill you up mostly with pastry but would stop the hunger pangs which is important for people in difficult situations.

I'm not sure that's the case though. That type of food tends to just make you crave more and leaves you unsatiated.(by design of the food manufacturers!) From experience and then ALOT of research and reading on the subject there is so much we have been lied to about. There's a surprise!. Decent whole food and good protein, and some adaptions as bodies are all different and respond differently, is better and more fulfilling however you have to get over the physical and psychological addiction these foods have over of us as a first step. And time to research and cook...which alot of people just don't have sadly.

Textured Soylent Protein...😂 Edit : I did a vegan diet for ten years....lost lots of weight....there was tvp meat alternatives...most disgusting and bland....I reverted back to being carnivorous with a roadside bacon, egg n mushroom foot long french stick sanger!...what a relief!

One of my go to recipes 👉🏼 750g 5% Minced Beef, 1 onion 🧅 chopped up fine. Pop in a slow cooker, crumble a couple of Oxo in too, cover with hot water. Cook on low for 6 to 8 hours, at the end thicken with some granules if required. Grab some premade puff pastry & make your own 👌🏼 or batch it up in the freezer for a later date ✌🏻

Going to try your recipe out, 👍🏿. As regards the mince, I want to buy the beef and grind it myself like my ma used to. Problem is finding a grinder/mincer that isn’t made in China that doesn’t break (manual one) or has dodgy wiring!

@@Mounhas Mincing your own doesn't seem so common these days, probably due to the availability from supermarkets. I used to work in a traditional ironmongers & sold the clamp on tinned mincer. The problem with modern kitchens there's nowhere to clamp them on 🙄 If you search the brand Porkert you'll find plenty available but jeez some of the prices 🫣

The steam coming out of them, shows how much content was full of water. No wonder it took so long cooling down, the filling gets boiled rather than baked.

Definitely a case of you get what you pay for. I think personally I would prefer to pay a bit more for more beef content but these are great for those on a tight budget. Am interested to see what other items are in the £1 range as we don't have an Iceland near us..

Even at 50p I’ll give these a miss. Hydrogenated coconut oil is high in saturated fat & increases the risk of heart disease & strokes. Also cooking cost is more than 15p - probably nearer 35p. Keep em coming Gaz

They call it the killer fat ad it is the worst fat you can eat.
@BrassChuckles
@BrassChuckles 9 ай бұрын
It's not saturated (stable) fat, it's unsaturated (unstable) fat which has had water molecules added to make it a solid at room temp. Also, it's anti-bacterial so adds shelf life. It's a trans-fat that kills your gut, causing inflammation in your body (it's highly processed food) and should be banned. Yeah, don't touch 'em.

I eat TVP (texturized vegetable protein) and it does have a distinctive taste which I can best describe as being a bit like wallpaper paste. The way I eat it is to season it heavily; it's good in Mexican dishes like tacos. I also will mix it with meat like the manufacturer has done here. Sounds like they tried to flavor it with salt, but if you don't have enough beef flavor (through the gravy or some beefy enhancement, then it's going to be bland. For example, I rehydrate TVP (what you call soya protein) with beef bouillon. Honestly, this is something I would buy.

there seems a lot of videos coming out about the new Iceland £1 range. Many of this new range are boxes with far far less than the normal 400g weight being less than 250g or in that range you really have to ask are they still worth it. 7% meat at 280g is not even 20g of meat in both. Puff pastry is not expensive and its not hard to just make your own. but with some content inside. you look at it and it looks like beef but it could be the soya protien making on it is meat. when you can get 500g of mince from aldi for £2.49. even if you look at the whole 20g then its only 10p worth of mince at this price

I had a good snoop round out local iceland today, 3 freezers for the £1 stuff. I noticed the £1 veg lasagnes had been put into the reduced area. I will probably give anything with hydrognated oil a miss, which is a shame as i was looking at the balti bakes and the cheese and onion bakes and the pies all contain thr oil in them..came out with some more £1 fish cakes and the beef lasagne, my son was after the chicken bites , so will give them a go next time. Good idea for Iceland to do this range.

Earlier in the year I picked up bags of Tesco Finest frozen chips reduced from £4 to 40p a bag, other bags reduced to 10p a bag and last week I picked up two selection boxes of cheeses for £1 a box at Asda. The pastry should be the hardest part, it’s easy to get an economical filling with basic ingredients to taste good. It’s annoying to only get it half right as there’s a lot of struggling people out there who could do with budget-friendly options.

They should have introduced this before Christmas, not after, so that folks that are struggling could have saved a few bob when they needed it most. I see they have a 'ten items for a tenner' deal on now too.

The cost of cooking that in a full size electric oven would be high. Even my gas oven would cost a bit for 25 min but we usually have other food in the oven, roast potatoes, oven chips etc.

If they left the soya protein out there would be 5 little bits of meat in the pasty. That’s the reason there 50p. Did I hear that right. 7% beef and 4% onion.
