They look well made. It would be nice to add some metal fittings to the top and walls of the shelter to secure lighting. It's easier to add this at the time of casting than it is to try and fix something later
@kj3n569
@kj3n569 Жыл бұрын
I just posted a similar comment, but for a rail system of some sort that hammocks, shelves, rifle racks, etc. could be easily mounted on. Didn't even think of lighting, and I'm an Electrician. You're 100% correct about mounting hardware, it would be much simpler to add a couple of J-bolts through the form than to drill RedHeads or anchors after. Tapcons will only support so much weight, and precast will tear up masonry bits.

The precast shelters are nice, affordable and are going to sell fast. It would be a huge benefit to be able to add some type of eyebolts, or better yet a rail system that would allow hammocks or shelving to be easily installed. Something like Uni-Strut would work. Just a suggestion. Keep up the good work, Ron. I'll be calling in a year or two.

Switching from a round hole to a square hole for an entrance (plus a sturdy ladder) is definitely a good idea. And maybe add about another foot or so in height, so you can have some added storage space in the bottom (for things like water, food, medical supplies, batteries, lights, and any other items that you might need), just like in your other bunkers ?

What would be nice is straight upright ends with preformed door indentations. This would allow somebody to put 2 end to end to double or triple the length (by linking the doors/hatches). Either that or just make a 20" version but I think 2 smaller versions linked by a door would be stronger.
@tomjacobsen9431
@tomjacobsen9431 Жыл бұрын
You could expand upon @steveturansky9031's idea and create a modular shelter "system" out of these depending on the customers space needs an budget. Granted, it would not be as luxurious as your metal shelters but if someone has a large family, something like that could be an option. Just a thought.

I would develop one with metal brackets in the wall on both sides so you can attach bunk beds that can be folded down or secured in an up position. You could then use the lower bunks on each side as seating when not sleeping. You also need some brackets to secure lighting and maybe some shelving for supplies. Looks good as a beginning bunker though. Good job thanks.

Would like to see more shelters based on monolithic dome design
@wjf213
@wjf213 Жыл бұрын
Yes, I love the Monolithic Dome. I have built over 50 of them since 2000, and three of them underground. They weren't "BUNKERS" per se, but homes that were over 2,000sf and one was a tad over 3,000sf, and with a few tweaks, could become really solid VERY VERY long-term bunkers. I mean they're homes to begin with so the adjustment to suddenly being forced to live in a bunker, is a MUCH smaller learning curve, and that's a blessing when things become stressful. Personally, if it was me just starting out with land only, I'd build a dome underground that was my home first, and then bunker second if ever it needed to be.

I feel like these would be good for two or one person bunkers. you could probably fit a bathroom, kitchen, and food/water supplies easy if you only need one bunkbed. I don't know if i could survive long with 4 people, considering the water and food storage in a shelter that size. Honestly, I wish the shelter was 8 feet longer. that way you could put storage cabinets all in the front area of the shelter and live in the other half. I can certainly see how this could work though. Great job on this project and I'm happy you're considering the less fortunate.

Ron when we built our house and garage i had what i call my 8x8 bunker shelter 10' down installed on 12" of gravel, under concrete floor and was not to get wet inside at all. I told them they need a french drain system as they lowered it in the ground but they said it will be Ok. The concrete had something in it that was to repel water. Well it got ground water in it all the time. Water just seeped right through 8" concrete and for a year they tried to stop the water from getting in. They drilled holes through the bottom and then under high pressure spray some kind of sealer that didn't work. Well the fix was a major dig from the back of my garage down the hill to install a pipe 10' deep and then tunneled 13' under the garage floor to install a drain system. I guess what im saying is please install drain systems. Love your channel and hope one day we get a large bunker. ✌

What do you suggest for us lowly serfs who do not own our land? If I stretched my budget, I could actually afford $20k, but how does one justify a shelter when they don’t own the land it’s being buried on? Is moving a shelter a realistic idea or is that not feasible? I’m sure there are many people who are not home owners wondering the same thing.... How do I protect my family, but not waste my money on an investment into land I don’t own? Thank you thank you thank you!!!!
@kj3n569
@kj3n569 Жыл бұрын
If I were you I'd look for land to put it on. That 20k is just the cost of the bunker, it will cost thousands more to ship it and install it. Moving it afterwards doesn't seem feasible cost wise. Check tax auction sites in your State. You can find deals on land that will allow a bunker but may have reasons for people not wanting to build a house on it, airport nearby, wastewater plant, whatever. If all you want is a bug out spot you may get lucky. Just a thought. Good luck!

Would really like to use that entry as emergency exit filled with sand. And have a horizontal L shaped entrance. 36” or 48” dia corrugated so that it’s got a higher psi zone rating and a better Z point radiation dosage. Service wise can drain the sand to add or remove items that can’t fit through the horizontal entrance. I have no problem with crawling 20ft into the shelter if that means less rads. Oh what about moving food and supplies in/out well, a dolly that rolls will do just fine and way more then workers get in crawl spaces. I like the price point and love the concept.

Ron. Do not use a copper fitting on a concrete penetration. The natural moisture in the ground will ionize and cause the copper to rust. Any time you have a pipe of any material even PVC etc passing through concrete you have to use a pipe sleeve. Concrete will expand and contract throughout the year and rub on any pipe that passes through it. This a building code thing. Google concrete pipe sleeves. Another one to look up is galvanized wall sleeves another type.

What about us in Australia? 😢 Could you fit some bolts & hooks into your wall at casting? For bed attachment? For lighting A clever person will be able to build everything into this small space. (toilet/shower under stairs?!) Attach fold down beds that you can fold up during daytime. Small kitchenette.

How's are you going to attenuate the gamma? I was thinking a hatch at the bottom that you can ratchet into place that'll have multiple inches of lead. The lid on the top will be for weather and protection, the bottom for gamma. Thoughts?
@AtlasSurvivalShelters

The small opening and it's off set. Unless your right under the blast the gamma will be at an extreme angle and it should do it's job

@@AtlasSurvivalShelters I dunno, that's a farcry less than a 6' mudroom. Just my 2 cents as someone that did 5 years in the Corps and had to go through annual NBC training. Some kind of lead shielding in the hatch seems like it'd be way smarter.

@@MrThenarsky I'm buying a couple of these and I've thought the same thing. Called a large lead supplier here in Florida and he explained having a lead hatch isn't really viable because of the weight. What about a thick concrete box / room over the hatch?? But then I wondered if the weight would damage or crush the shelter... ?
@MrThenarsky

@@perrylockhartiv8003 my thought was some kind of a lead hatch at the bottom. You could use some kind of ratchet to crank it into place maybe? Otherwise it would have to go on top of the shelter somehow. I don't think weight on the dirt would hurt anything. It's a 6' tunnel down into the shelter and it's a bomb shelter, i doubt much can hurt it.

@@MrThenarsky true... What about the extended shaft he mentioned in the video (I think it went from 4 feet up to 8 feet with the extension), would that help mitigate the gamma?

Already would have paid for this, but buying it is not the only obstacle. Getting the logistics in place in your area is a whole different challenge and surprisingly hard to get local professionals to sign up for. Really would have liked this option, but the logistical challenges are limiting me to the fiberglass tornado shelter only, unfortunately.

Good job, however very echoey need something to calm down the echo that would drive people insane down there for days. Maybe you could put some panels in there that absorb the sound🌴😎👍🇺🇸🇺🇸👍
