● In today's video you'll get to hear the brand new 2024 Toyota Gazoo Racing GR Yaris Rally2 in action at the 2024 WRC Rallye Monte-Carlo. This little beast is powered by a 257hp turbocharged 1.6 liter three-cylinder engine, which is mated to a five-speed sequential gearbox, and all-wheel drive with mechanical differential.

So happy to see the three-cylinder making it into WRC at last! This engine's design was the main project I worked on when I was working in Toyota's R&D centre a couple of years ago so it's like a child to me 😂

So do you think this engine is going to be the basis of a new Toyota straight six? Out side of the rally application I feel like the GR cars could've just used the Turbo 4 Toyota now makes as it would give similar power. Guess I can't picture a brand new engine being made just for 2 cars. Would love to have a new "Toyota" Supra with a straight six based off this engine. Pipe dream?

@@frankshabangu522 I would love to see a new inline-6 too but in these times I'm not too sure I'd count on it too heavily. I haven't worked for Toyota since 2020 and as far as I knew then, there weren't any in the works but who better to "modernise" the 2J in some form in terms of emissions and regulations etc. In saying that though they did make the G16 for only two models.. who knows!

That launch at <a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="185">3:05</a> sounds like an old fighter about to take flight. The Yaris does fly through the stage.

The car doesn't have the best showing in Monte (it's a totally brand new car against cars that has been developed for far longer after all) but on the other hand the car just won the Arctic Lapland Rally recently so all in all still a pretty good debut for the Rally2 version. Edit: the GR Yaris Rally2 occupied 4 positions in the Top 5 in Sweden.

Simply because we're used to 4 cylinder sound in wrc. This is 3 cyl which results in less explosions on given rpm compared to 4cyl which results in lower sound. 2nd thing that this is rally2 so the engine isn't as modified as in rally1, so it doesn't rev very high. 3rd thing is an intake restrictor (fia regulations) which pretty much flattens the power curve. It means that drivers pretty much can upshift at any rpm and the car will accelerate at the same rate, and because of higher risk of failure at high rpm they tend to upshift earlier.

It's a 3 cylinder engine. A 3 cylinder engine running at 7000 RPM will have a lower frequency than a 4 cylinder engine running at 7000 RPM.

Do you know how much torque in newton meters? It's almost more interesting than horsepower in this car. 💪😁👍

@@larszenthio1012 Actually i suppose torque is even more important in rally cars, cause they are not made for high top speeds, they are made to accelerate as fast as possible

Yeah top speed is electronically limited to 200km/h I believe.

No this is Rally2. Rally 1 cars have much much larger aero and the inline 4 and are faster. This is Rally2 with the 1.6 3 cyl and smaller aero and drive train of production.
