Chris, at 1:05 you nailed the reason for this class of bike, and why for most of us the bigger 700-900cc adv bikes are ok for touring but too big for offroad exploring. It is good to see the manufacturers finally get their mojo in this space.

Good choice, KTM's main focus is on performance, they don't seem to put a whole lot of thought into long term reliability, a good example of this is how quick the 790 adventurer came to market, now compare that to how long it took the T7 to come to market, Yamaha basically rode it around the world before they released it to the public.

400-450cc ADV/dual-sport: the lines are starting to blur. Maybe the ADV will get capable enough to where they'll be doing things better than the dual sport, while not giving up road/gravel comfort and utility. With people like Pol Tarrés, we see the bike Tenere is nearly as capable as a dirtbike if you put in enough time and talent. I think the 450 twin class will push it even more in that direction.

Bought 890 ADV R and 690 enduro R in 2024. Looks like 390 will be added in 2025… First thoughts and experience so far: 890 adv R too heavy, harsh suspension but sublime on the roads, 690: very high seat, overly expensive and harsh suspension but nice for trail riding, 390 nice compromise but should be 20 kg lighter. Lets see once it’s out
@constantinosschinas450313 күн бұрын
High seat at 910mm? It is pretty much a low seat for what it is, laughably low tbh even for medium sized men. 950mm would be high seat. 930mm would be ideal.

Price is the potential stickler here. Versus the new DRZ, I’m struggling to see why I’d have it. The new Z is far lighter, more suspension travel, being a Suzuki far more reliable and with FI, tuning potential will now be huge. Add a big tank and it’ll still be lighter than the 390 by 25kg.

I was eyeing the Royal Enfield Himalayan 450. It's a great ADV bike from what I can gather. However, it's missing that little bit extra that I am looking for that the new 2025 KTM 390 Adventure R seems to provide. The only concern(s) or issue I have is the KTM's exhaust, and the reliability and maintenance schedule. The KTM line just brings the fun factor (bigger than than the current 390), just no denying that. I just couldn't bring myself to get the current 390 for reasons mentioned in the video. The Honda CRF300 Rally is a great bike in so many ways and yet falls short enough that you need to spend more money for a bump to increase the lethargic HP and soft suspension. I don't want the Yamaha T700, great bike, but it's top heavy, too heavy and has low range. Let's not even talk about the full size 1000cc+ ADV bikes. ADV bikes in general in the market have just gotten too big and too heavy. I am not looking for an ADV that pretends it's an enduro. I am looking for a light weight 400cc-ish ADV bike that gives me what I like in the larger bikes (like cruise control, ride-modes, ABS on/off, traction control, adjustable quality suspension, appropriate wheel sizes) in a smaller, lighter package. An ADV bike is a bike that allows you to tour the world on and off-road. It's not meant to be a dedicated street bike nor a dedicated single track enduro. It goes from tarmac to dirt on and off again over vast distances due to range providing you with adequate performance again, on and off-road to make it possible. I think the new 2025 KTM 390 Adventure and Adventure R along with the Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 are answering the call many riders have been asking for; a smaller, lighter form factor capable ADV bike. Choose your weapon, I don't think you can go wring with either bike, it just depends on if one meets your needs more than the other one. In my case it does seem to me that the new 2025 KTM 390 Adventure R does that. Of course there is more evaluation to be done, but from a first glance I think we may have a winner!

The elephant in the room is: why does this weigh likely 403lbs curb when the kove 800x weighs 408lbs curb and will likely be the same price or cheaper. The answer is its built off the duke 390 platform which ktm needed to conform to A2 license requirements, and just kept adding weight to give it the ‘adventure comforts’ that people want. And ktm still managed to make it way lighter than other ‘lightweight’ advs (ibex 450, himalayan)
@benjy28813 күн бұрын
I don't know why they don't just keep the weight down and restrict the power to meet A2 requirements via the ECU, then if you want you can unlock full power with an ECU flash, kind of like what Suzuki and Yamaha do with the sv650 and mt07
@Weltbummler2313 күн бұрын
@ i asked an AI that question and it says KTM only likes to offer restricted options their larger engine bikes (eg, duke 790, enduro 690 r) for A2. They prefer to leave the 390’s and below unrestricted. I guess theres an element of simplicity and cost to that.
@benjy28813 күн бұрын
@@Weltbummler23 In other words they just skimp out on design and materials to keep the cost down, but then the dr650 is about 20kg lighter than this bike, its 250cc bigger, it doesn't use new material, its got mid 90's tech like a steel frame and tank.
@Weltbummler2313 күн бұрын
@@benjy288 yup pretty much at that point any type of design optimization for weight goes out the window. Recall the first gen 390 duke was ~330lbs and didnt meet the A2 requirements, so in the next gen they added 30lbs to just barely get it above the minimum weight. And btw if suzuki decides to refresh the dr650 like they did to the drz, expect another 16lbs there as well. It would weigh 380lbs and still be lighter than this 390 ADV R.
@benjy28813 күн бұрын
@@Weltbummler23 The better thing for KTM to do in that situation would be to reduce the power slightly to meet the power to weight requirements, instead of adding 30lbs And it wouldn't surprise me if a redesigned dr650 would be heavier, because it would have to have ABS and an euro 5 exhaust.
